Hello,

Finally, after long long years. My dad thought about getting a NEW car. Now, he wants to get a diesel car. Budget is around 6L..

I've shortlisted two cars -

Maruti Suzuki All new Swift ZDi

Volkswagon Polo Diesel

Here are the needs of my dad -

Should have good after sell service.

Availability of parts and reasonable cost of parts.

Good looks.

Good fuel efficiency.

And here is what I need -

Allow wheels :bleh:

Good interior.

Spacious.

Should have good pick torque

Comfort.

Better handling.

Swift comes for 6.45L in local showroom whereas Polo comes just a littlebit over 7.0L. As per technical specifications, Swift looks clear winner in terms of power, fuel efficiency but I need your feedback. Any other suggestions?

My view :-

Think like this :-

Option one :- Maruti Swift = Andriod smartphone

Option Two :- Volk polo = Apple Iphone.

Now, Andriod is cheaper and does not comes with 10000001 rules/Limitations of Apple and way to use the phone.
You wont need to think 500 times before buying an accessories for car(in swift) which could void warranty, because just like apple, volkswagen wont support so-called-warrranty even if you touch a wire.

Polo/Iphone = slave of the company even after paying premium money.
Swift/andriod = Cheaper and less tension :)

I was a great admirer of Polo by its external appearance/looks. Had a test drive to buy it and found it is not worth buying even if it was being sold at one lakh rupees less.

Just test drive it and you will know what I mean. It will clear all your doubts even after one test drive.

* It has a 3 pot engine which feels underpowered.
* NVH levels are way too high.
* Interiors are not impressive (personal choice).
* No free service (you pay even for 1st, 2nd and 3rd service)
* Even top model has no Climate Control.
* Indicators / Wipers controls are in opposite side (personal choice)

There might be other points but these are the points coming to my mind which stopped me from buying Polo. Buying a Swift ZDI, hoping to get it by this month-end.

Why not the New Honda Jazz. After the recent price cuts, its easily in your budget.

Looks better than both Swift and Polo - Subjective opinion

Has more space than both

Decently powerful 1.2l 90ps engine

Should have decent ASS and Resale Value.

Because he has specifically asked for a Diesel car and Jazz is Only petrol.

Also, Resale value in not that good, because its not in demand and hence you wont find same as swift and polo.

Why not check out i20 Asta its worthy competitor to Swift and it comes with all the bells and whistles.

Also with polo u r only paying for its design (wow!!!) but sadly cars require stuff like good after sales service and cheaper spare parts too.

Consider the Honda Brio - It has got good reviews - honda brio - Google Search

I inquired at a Honda dealership - They expect it to launch in September 2011 in 15 days.

Sorry didn't read your post clearly. Go for the Volkswagen Polo.

Close your eyes and choose Swift Diesel. I drove earlier gen swift diesel and it was brilliant. Though if you are okay with Fiat/Tata, then I would suggest Fiat Grande Punto 90BHP. ;)

consider i20 Asta diesel comes with a 1.4l engine and 6th manual gear...my friend got one recently and its kickass

loads of accessories and is for 7.0l

I just want to clear some doubts about so much negativity on Tata/Fiat :-

Cars which have 1.3 MJD engine which is Manufactured by Tata/Fiat at Pune plant and given to Suzuki and used in their own cars.

Some of those cars :-

Tata Indica

Tata Indigo Manza

Fiat Punto

Fiat Linea

Maruti Swift

Maruti ritz

Maruti sx4

Maruti Dzire

Opel Astra

Suzuki Wagon R+

hence , kindly stop bashing Tata's / Fiat.

Also the term "car" refers to the stuff other than the engine.Factors like the interior quality, panel gaps(which Tata is apparently exceptional with), service quality, handling, ride quality etc etc. also play a major role.

Suzuki has tuned the engines to greater perfection than all other car manufacturers. The Suzuki Swift, Tata Indica Vista Quadrajet and the Fiat Punto all run on the same engines. The Swift is the fastest of the lot doing a standstill to 100kmph in 14.13 seconds as compared to Vista’s 21.1 seconds and Punto’s 17.57 seconds. It also offers a wider gear ratio than the Fiat Punto making for comfortable driving and a lesser need to shift gears repeatedly. The power to weight ratio of the Swift also shows a better scale than the Fiat complement with a kerb weight of 1075kg in the Swift as compared to a 1130kg in the Punto. That was that about the hatchbacks, in the c-segment sedans. The Suzuki SX4, the Tata Indigo Manza and the Fiat Linea T-jet are powered by the same engine. Here again, the Suzuki is tuned for better performance than the engine sisters of the class.

As for the Jazz, the reason it didn't sell much was it being overpriced. Now, its priced correctly. There's a reason sales went up from 275 in July to 600 in August.

@ OP - Sorry didn't read Diesel. Then i guess Swift is a good option. You can also consider Nissan Micra and Ford Figo. Both have highly rated diesel engines. But no idea about A.S.S. and resale value.

OK with all the opinions here, would you please test drive the Ritz before coming to a conclusion.

way better than swift IMHO, swift is over-rated now

^^^ the ritz has better interiors but suffers from overall nimble manouvering abilitiesof the swift.

Id stay stick with the maruti swift. Overall reliability is great. And best part is their service is very mature.

Also do not consider the swift vdi to be free from any problems.Way back in 2007 AFAIK the swift Vdi's had a gear teething problem.
Recently they started calling back their cars.Read the link below:

Wow you made it very clear in MY PART OF INTEREST (Mobiles), but unfortunately, you misspelled the word "android" :P

Thanks for your feedback guys. The next thing I'm gonna do is to take a test drive of both i20 and Swift. Polo is out of my league though I loved the exterior sooooo much.. Can't even explain how much I loved the looks of Polo.

^^^ ummm a word about the i20. Im not sure if the following is true but do check with svc guys on an informal chit chat:

A senior of mine owns a hyundai getz prime(1.1L). He said all getz have an issue with the rear brakedrum assembly and causes issues after 35000 Kms on anaverage. This issue is apparently not in santros but since, as per him and conformed from svc guys, the i20 is buuilt on the same chasis, the problem rears its head here also. That senior got his rear brakedrums changed to that of santro.

sorry in my earlier post i meant i20 diesel magna (not asta which is higher) for 7.3L
