Canon 55-250 IS is certainly the best option inside your budget..

However, If you succeed in extending the budget bit more, you can look forward to Tamron 70-300mm VC
Not sure of the exact price but it is 20+ k

I recently used this Tamron 70 - 300 mm VC on my Nikon D90 and its VC (IS in terms of Canon and VR as in terms of Nikon) was awesome, once it loocked on target it never moved a little.

Very very recommendable if the budget is permitting.

Hello everyone...is anyone here using a Canon 17-85mm f4-5.6 IS USM lens? Or tried one anytime? I have an offer for this lens and for a very good price too, but needed some advice if I should get this one or add some more cash to get a new Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 NON VC?

Canon 50mm f1.8

Canon 55-250mm IS

How are both lenses? I just ordered them. Want to hear something from pros :)

I am no pro, but ill attempt to answer anyways. Both are good lenses and they are a great starter kit. :)

@harish - Depends whether you want speed over reach and IS.

The 17-50mm has a rather short zoom range but is very fast and great in low light.

The Canon 17-85mm is also very sharp and has a longer range and IS to boot. IS will help in shooting subjects that dont move but for moving subjects you can't compensate.

So decide what you want more and accordingly spend. :)

I would love to have the fast Tamron lens but then the cheaper price of a used Canon 17-85mm is hard to resist and not to forget its USM motor for faster & smoother focus.

I wanted something that would give good results for portraits too, without having to change to 50mm prime.

If you consider just the IQ, then which one would be a better option?

IQ wise both are very sharp. For portraits its a tie as the Canon can reach 85mm which is more suitable for portraits but at f5.6 its not that fast to sufficiently blur the background. The Tamron is better at f2.8 but at 50mm, its more suitable only for a head and shoulders portrait.

I guess the Canon lens has more advantages than the Tamron, which sure has a major factor going its way. But then Canon is cheaper too, will stick with it for now and sure will be a nice upgrade from my 18-55mm kit lens.

--- Updated Post - Automerged ---

I just read some reviews of the Canon 17-85mm and the major issue it has is soft focus at corners and CA. Will do some more reading about the Tamron and see what it has to offer.

EDIT:Most of the reviews suggest that the Canon 17-85mm lens has clearly have advantage when it comes to features and ergonomics but doesnt really have much good to talk about the IQ. Dpreview gives the 17-85mm and the 18-55mm same points for image quality, which was surprising. I have been looking for a upgrade from the kit lens but now confused if I should get the 17-85 or what?

Guys, help me out here.

Guys,a query here. I am a journalism student and currently own a Nikon D5000 with 18-55mm and 55-200mm lens. However I need a 85mm/105mm telephoto lens and a fast prime for street photography plus shooting college events( that mostly happen during night). And here's where the lack of autofocus motor is making it's presence felt. AF-S version of both the 50mm prime and 85mm telephoto is way out of my budget. So I have decided to upgrade to a better camera body as a long term camera.

What would you guys suggest? Should I sell the D5000+ kit lens for a D90 body+ 1.8D 50mm prime? Or switch to Canon. 550D body is quite cheap now. And 600D(body only) is only 3k more than the D90(body only) on flipkart. Which would be a better upgrade path?

^^thats upto you, i think that you'd now prefer nikon ergonomics as compared to canon, but canon has cheap alternatives :)

D90 or 550D , dont see the point of the 600D

interested in learning photography and willing to invest around 25k inclusive of a prime lens.

currently eyeing Canon EOS 1000D + 18-55mm IS + Prime Lens + 2GB + Carry Bag kit for ~25k

Any alternatives in my price range?

im fine with purchasing used body if under any warranty.

Any points i shall consider while buying? asking since im a noob in this.

My primary subjects would most probably be sunsets, landscapes and people.

alternatively 1100D is costing 26k with kit lens..shall be with IS...

so tempting but then i wont be able to afford Prime :(

damn confusion..

is 1100D worth it ? :P

what if purchased form SG or USA? :P

Yes the 1100 D is really a good upgrade over 1000D so you should definitely purchase. USA will be definitely be cheaper than India.

Foto Centre Trading Pvt. Ltd.: Digital SLR Camera this fillow has 1000D kit for 19600 and 1100D for 25400 and prime lens for 4400 the cheapest I have seen on indian soil. he is from mumbai you can visit him and do little haggling and purchase. :D
