@bombaybaba

Thanks for that reply man. Made me more inclined towards an ebook reader.

Now tell me, will Kindle or Sony reader support PDFs? and the *ahem ahem* stuff? Won't there be format and technical bindings and restrictions when you buy one or the other?

Also suppose I buy ebooks from Amazon's Kindle Store, then they are my property right? and I can offload them from the kindle and keep them on my computer or hard drive right? If they are going to be stuck on the Kindle forever then sooner or later I'll have to let go of some of them. That situation is not acceptable to me.

I already have over 2000 books in my library, and I haven't yet read more than half of them. Would buying a reader and consequently buying most of the books in my collection be a sane choice?

Anyways at the moment the PDFs and *ahem* versions of books over the net are poorly done. I'll really have to be sure about buying such a gadget, because of the above mentioned reasons.

^ The Kindle and Sony both support PDF , either natively or by some arm twisting.

as for the backup , you are allowed to copy all the books you have bought to ur PC.

As for "ahem " files ,they would be considered non-DRM files and will be read by the reader.

About the poor quality of PDF on net , well if u have a 5 or 6 inch screen device it should not be problem , also due to adjustable contast ratio u can make faint PDFs appear darker and easier to view.

There are members like dark messiah & var89 who have ordered ebook readers , lets watch their experience too.

Here is one more from China

customs will be paid by the customers obviously.........and no special indian prices ...everything will still be in dollars

I just came back from outside and to do some window shopping i went to the on the way electronics market. There they had put a poster of this.
Looks like chinese clone of Kindle. I was not able to spot this thing in the market so no price or any information. If i go again there, will get the details, hopefully it will be available by that time.

^ seems interesting , if cheap enough this should be amazing. ideally around 5k should get us many interested ppl. or am i being too optomistic about the price ? raks.

^^ I too expect prices to be less. And by 5K yes you are optimistic. I am expecting it to be around 1000 RMB or 7000 Rupees. Let me see, when i go to that electronic market i will checkout.
You can do this...

Go to Taobao.com and search for "hanvon" or "汉王". You may find something. Few of them i saw are in range of 2.25k RMB which is more than 15000 Rupees. :(

PS: Above site is in chinese. :P

I have seen the Hanvon video from CeBIT 2009 on youtube and it looks nice but the price is too much for a chinese product.

I even checked taobao but the website is just too much for my senses lol.

Still in this scenario if the chinese cost around 12k or mor it would be better to go for amazon as they ship to India now. what say u ?

The problem is that we all have a particular mentality that chinese products are sub standard which is true with me too. Before buying anything here i am also speculative if the brand is unknown. But there are brands here which are good.

But yes if the product performs on similar lines as Kindle then price is justified but at the end of day it is a clone/copy product and for that the price is too much.

And yes taobao is too much to handle as there is absolutely nothing english. But nevertheless i use it to get an idea about prices before actually buying stuff.
