The Kindle will not be subjected to Custom Duty ?
Is it payable by the buyer or Amazon will bear it ?

On thing..what kind of books can we read ? I mean what format ? Some proprietary format ??

Asking because here I have seen lots of Kindle lookalikes selling in the electronic markets. Dont have much details.

@ raks

can u check out what sort of kindle like devices they are , also any brandname would be better , so that we can search about it on the net.

I don't have much information, but will get it when i go to that place next time. But you see asking them is really a problem as they speak negligible english.
But yes i have their monthly newspaper where they have products listed. Here is a pic that i just took.

PS: Although this may not look like kindle but similar devices are available.

^ maybe we can arrange a GO if even 5 ppl are interested.

What is of most importance is the screen size and the format support.

Do make other suggestions.

^^ But i have really no idea what this thing is, what it does, absolutely no idea.

Ok guys wait for some time, i will post this pic on shanghaiexpat.com and try seeking information from there.

Has amazon tied up with any local 3G provider? afaik, they haven't even done that in Europe.. so seems unlikely that they have in India

@raks, visit gome or suning mall. I am sure its there in Shangai, you get branded and non branded stuff there and they may speak a little english. Good place to start for searching compared to local bazaar...lol

Ok i will try i sunning also, it is very near to my home. Just that i am not getting time currently because of work :(

PS: Sunning is very expensive even for normal small accessories type stuff also.

@^^

Holy Cow!!

But is the Kindle or any other ebook reader worth it? Will I save any money in the long run, if I buy one of these readers and ebooks all the time?

More importantly, is it time to let go of that exhilarating feeling when you hold a new book and turn the first few pages??

Also Kindle and even the Sony readers will have some kind of binding and restrictions in terms of proprietary formats right? Where dos that leave us?

I am asking all of this because I want to be sure before taking the plunge and buying an ebook reader.

shop at the right time and it will be cheaper than local market. :hap2:

@phoenix844884

PDF is the format to go for. ("ahem ahem")

e ink is supposed to give u the feel of paper.

ebooks will be cheaper in the future (they are right now too ,compare on amazon)

the ebook version of latest dan brown outsold the paper version for some time on amazon

the ebook business has seen a huge growth in business compared to the 1st Q of 2008

think of all the trees we would be saving

There is always a transition time when new tech comes ppl will be apprehensive when music made jump from LP records to cassetts and then to CDs and now to flash based mp3 players.

This is the tarnsition time for books.
