as expected - good to know that its official now;waiting to see how it will perform in current games :) I hope it will take one year to settle down this range of cards to be normalized in terms of price-software(driver,os) and competitions. I am more eager to know what Nvidia is holding back in their sleeves - they are taking beating for many months - its time to bounce back (I am not a fan boy but love to see the cut throat competition)

time for my GTX275 to make way for ATI 5xxx series card.
maybe i'll w8 till nVidia make their cards available.

But is there any game in the market that won't give you min 40fps at the highest possible settings in the most complicated of maps and at 1080p resolution with the top end current generation cards?

Don't think there is any need to upgrade until Crysis 2 come up.

The only reason I'd upgrade would be insanely low power consumption in comparison to the current generation cards.Sure its 40nm its going to be smaller and less power hungry but enough to warrant an upgrade?

I vowed not to upgrade unless a power efficient card ~ 12k comes along that can give me avg 40fps at 1920x1200 high settings on Crysis. None of the present cards can achieve that. Wonder if midrange of this new release can achieve that.

Its all going to same once again
New card comes out, me cant resist to upgrade
card will be twice as powerful and fast on paper
New games will be developed so that they still lag with them
waiting for new card and it goes on

Not essentially. I bought an HD4870 512mb around January of this year. It can currently play Crysis with "Very High" settings @1920x1080 and 2xAA with an average 26 FPS. Crysis Warhead does seem to slow down a bit. But anyway, it consumes power like hell!!! Since I don't have a dedicated download rig, the power bills occasionally go through the roof.

I will upgrade if I get a good price for my card and can get a new one ~10k-12k with good features as well as lesser power consumption.

The colleagues from Tweakers brought new rumors up, publishing a 3DMark Vantage score in the performance preset of the mainstream solution RV840 (Juniper) already a few days ago. The chip would have reached a P9500 points, while they did not give any further details about the test system. But this causes a ranking between HD 4850 and HD 4870.

* Cypress/RV870: P16000-P18000
* Juniper/RV840: P95xx
* Redwood/RV830: P46xx
Now the same source has also a result of the eagerly expected performance chip RV870 (Cypress) on hand. But here they do not commit themselves to an exact amount of points, but give a span between P16000 and P18000, which is almost twice the RV840 and already atop of the HD 4870 X2 regions.
The long lasting thesis, that the RV870 is just a doubled RV840, is not weakened by the expected 3DMark Vantage score.

AMD RV870 with P18000 in 3DMark Vantage? - News - Hardware-Infos

According to the latest rumors AMD's ATI RV870 flagship graphics card launch is almost imminent (somewhere next month)

At an Asian bulletin board, is seems that the RV870 surfaced with specs and all, it supposedly comes with a 384 Bit memory interface, but that info seems shady and somewhat inaccurate, we'll leave that info as is.

Other colleagues published a 3DMark Vantage scores in the performance preset for the mainstream solution RV840 (Juniper) already a few days ago. That chip reached a P9500 points, while they did not give any further details about the test system. But this causes a ranking between HD 4850 and HD 4870.

That same source has also a result of the flagship product RV870 (Cypress) on hand. But they did not disclose exact performance number, but a range in-between P16000 and P18000, which is almost twice the RV840 and passing the HD 4870 X2.

  • Cypress/RV870: P16000-P18000
  • Juniper/RV840: P95xx
  • Redwood/RV830: P46xx

Though 3Dmark says very little, it's safe to assume that the new flagship card will performance double opposed to the last generation.

AMD RV870 gets P18000 in 3DMark Vantage?

techPowerUp! News :: Radeon HD 5870 Aggressively Priced: Report

Cypress is expected to be launched on 22 September, close to two weeks after the company unveils the Evergreen family of DirectX 11 compliant GPUs on September 10. Market availability is expected in October. In related news from the same report, the enthusiast-grade accelerator that uses two of these GPUs, codenamed "Hemlock", is expected to be out in November.
5870 to be priced at $300,same as what 4870 launched at,and goes up against gtx285.

now how many shader does it have, 1600 or *gulp* 1920?
(or maybe I am overestimating.:P)
