Are consoles killing PC Gaming

I know its a very touchy topic and has been discussed before but somehow i believe things are changing/have changed for PC Gaming. It is no longer the preferred platform for developers. We don't get the first taste of the latest/greatest games and engine technology(eg: Gears of war on Unreal III, Assaian's creed, GTA series) and our gfx cards are already topping the existing consoles available in the market so every port they do if done properly we dont have to upgrade our existing gfx cards. Also after crysis was released devs have understood that they might be able to make the GOD engine but they just cant expect everybody else(Gamer/Gfx Chip Manufacturers) to keep up with the development.

The June 2008 refresh i belive will be the last "refresh" for PC gamers. After this there will only be tinkering with the same chips till the time next gen consoles are due. So where does it leave us PC gamers now.

All the ports if done "properly" will make the Dec 2008 refresh look stupid. I know there is a thread on TE saying "Think again if you think PC gaming is dead"... Well its not dead but yes its definately not kicking like it used to...

Your all thoughts...

#1. Its not a touchy topic (I am in very bad mood for obvious reasons so excuse me if you find it offense)

#2. In any case, from day 1, it is a no brainer that pc gaming IS expensive then console gaming- but the experience and fun factor is extremely unparalleled.

#3. Quake series, ut series, halo series, half life series, age of empires series and nfs series ruled pc gaming- and still are irrespective of the fact if they are in console or not. Granted console have more hits, but IN MY OPINION pc gaming has more of what I want to call it "more life span".

#4. In been pc gaming- its always been keyboard and mouse. It was before, it is now and it will be ALWAYS.

^^ Games on PC are easy to play if Game need more keys... But still attracting towards console because of high detailed graphics :D

Consoles are certainly affecting PC Gaming in a big way. A couple of years ago i would have laughed off the same question, but today when i look at hardware prices and the insane configs required to play the latest games well :S . I just think that maybe buying a console and forgetting the PC for gaming would be so much simpler!

All said and done, i dont think i will ever give up my PC for gaming, but i sure wont be able to spend big $$$ on it often

Buggy drivers and software are plaguing the pc platform. Piracy is also a reason why consoles have become a dev's first choice. A console does not need upgrades is cheaper and people can put the saved money to buy more games or peripherals.

How about if we could play RTS on consoles, but with keyboards + mouse :) , that would be awesome!

The consoles may be cheaper but the games for pc are cheaper compared to both major consoles.

The only reason I can think of is:
Piracy: Pc games can be cracked and pirated copies can be distributed easily. Starforce made it difficult to crack game but had a very negative impact.

PS3 can't be modded (yet), but 360 can be. But a single RROD can fix that.

I think there are two main reasons.

Number One is definitely piracy. The game company people have realised that if they put their efforts into a console game, the returns are much higher than in a PC version of the same.

Number Two is that a whole generation of avid PC gamers are getting older and maybe are finding it easier to get one system on which they know a game will work and will not have to worry about drivers/patches/system requirements.

There will always be a PC market and people like Valve (also the people who made Sins of a Solar Empire, Penny Arcade people etc) who have found better distribution systems will survive and keep making good games.

I always found console gaming more desirable, fun, exciting & cheap from the days of NES :)

the only reasons I used to use the PC were The Sims, Movies, Music, Internet, Pictures & DVD Burning :P

but since my left hand stopped working I shifted completely to the PC in May 2006 as I can game via Voice Commands (Game Commander 2) on the PC :D

so yes in my opinion consoles always did beat the PC for gaming & even more so now ;)

I have switched from PC gaming to console gaming completely and I am happy I made the change ! No more upgrading for me.

But I still miss the mouse + keyboard combo for FPS. But still I just need to buy the XFPS Sniper and I can use the kyb+mouse and get the best of both worlds !

But I doubt PC gaming is dead, but yeah earlier you could play practically ever new game with even onboard 6100. But now you need a high end card + system for practically every game out there ! But still the moment PC games start getting exponentially better than console games (graphics wise) then more people will shift back to PC gaming. (Though that should take some time since neither console is utilized fully. But maybe in 2 years PC games will start looking far better.

I simply cannot imagine playing FPS games on the console. the k/b mouse combo would always be far more accurate and natural than that analog controller.

However most of the major titles for the console are being ported for the PC and vice versa. this leads me to believe that both platforms would be supported by all the developers for some time to come.

the one big advantage the console guys have is that the same platform can be used for 5 - 6 years with ease. (eg. the PS2) however the PC guys have to upgrade like every year to be able to play the newer games at high settings atleast. This and the fact that many of the consoles are being projected as lifestyle devices is the reason for the sudden rise in console popularity.

For me personally PC Rocks.. I simply cannot imagine pulling of headshots with that analog stick

I feel the same.

After I bought the 2407 and then got married, I realized I dont want to be be changing graphic cards every season and shifted to consoles.

Consoles are fun... Big screen big entertainment and the graphics are top notch too. Once in a while I still game on PC, but not much.

IMO,for the price of a PS3 or X360+HDTV you can get a much better PC which you won't need to upgrade at all for 1-2 years.
The cost of a good XBOX or PS3 game is 2500 Rs while the a good PC title costs 1500 Rs MAX. So I don't think console gaming is cheaper than PC gaming at all.

The only thing the consoles are beating the PC are as you said, are release of many great games which are first released on a console.
much later an unoptimized port is released for the PC.

Sony and Microsoft pay big money to developers to ensure that some games like GTA IV stay exclusive atleast for some time to thier consoles only.
Microsoft reportedly paid 50 million for the GTA IV extra episodes, unfortunately there is no such option for the PC.
So in conclusion,
many games will always be released first on the consoles then on the PC,unless the game producers do not whore themselves out to the console companies.

I don't think you are right in saying that June 2008 will be the last 'refresh' for gamers until next-gen consoles release, as I am sure games like
Far Cry 2,Rage,Alan wake,Hawx et al will prompt some development as far as chips are concerned.
Not every game is a bad console port you know. Many developers remake console games especially for the PC, with better graphics.

But i'm sure PC gaming will be kicking again when the console games begin looking outdated compared the their PC counterparts.;)

Oh and one more thing...I forgot about the lagging framerates i experienced when playing games like GTA 4,COD on my friends PS3.
It totally puts me off when these games lag on the basic AA and resolutions on which they run.

when talking about pc gaming, people just think about the latest and eyecandy stuff like grid,ac,ut3,gta4

this makes hardly a quarter of the good games released every year

there is the huge indie games movement, there are the oldie games that have infinite replayability, small flash games yaddayaddayadda

First of all i ain't saying PC Gaming is dead... All i am saying is " Are Consoles Killing PC Gaming"...

I know two negatives with console gaming:

Lack of Piracy

Lack of K/b & Mouse Support

But don't you think the Dev's already know that... I don't think its tough enough to incorporate a K/b & Mouse support with consoles and i am sure next gen will come with that.

One can say piracy is the main reason for Consoles to be the choice for dev's but there is something else also. It is much much easier to develop a game/engine for a console cause you know what hardware is it gonna be used on. Your engine don't have to scale as per the hardware it gets to be used on. And that's a big negative for PC Gaming.

I think games are definitely moving in the console direction. Consoles are killing variety in PC gaming titles, most popular PC titles are shooters or RTS, racing and sports titles have been taken over by the consoles according to me.

The gap between the "Gaming PC" and the "Normal PC" is stretching and as far as the fun factor goes, I think consoles are better. Besides consoles look better in the living room :D

one should not really blame people for preferring eyecandy, that is just human nature..........by the way there are those who actually seek quality gameplay/storyline etc too, and they would love games like the longest journey even to this day.
Getting back to the topic of discussion, it is obvious that PC is lagging behind consoles for now, the fact remains that new generation consoles still have low penetration compared to the PC in the developing world, where a large section of the population just won't shell out upwards of 15K on a gaming device.

I think we can switch to pcs like these if not into gaming and invest in a console for gaming. But unless Microsoft decides which side to choose we will be stuck with delayed console ports for pcs. Take out gaming from the pcs and linux has a strong advantage or we may see windows 7 for xbox 720 :).
