Guyz...I am also dropping into this topic...
I had a X-fi extreme Music before....it sounded good till I heard a asus xonar dx...
The sound of x-fi was bit hard and was really kind of artificial...

Now, I own a Asus Xonar DX and it really sounds far far better than the x-fi...
and @ TORCH .... please do some research on sound cards before you state these lines...
Huh? That's makes no sense, at all. For music and movies a sound card does nothing, absolutely NOTHING at all other than output the software rendered audio stream. The only factor that matters is the SNR and other measurements pertaining to the physical output quality. Any aftermarket sound card is almost imperceptible from one another in this respect for any audio system you're going to hook up to a PC.

Conclusion: Xonar is far superior in both movies and music than the x-fi .
And regarding EAX ...Now a days most games have dolby digital....lolz

Dolby Digital is.... a compression codec. That's like saying games use MP3 to produce 3d positional sound and effects. What a clueless idiot and a fanboy.

The comparison between the two is plain and simple. Xonar is just a high quality analog output. X-Fi based cards are a high quality analog out that also do PROPER OpenAL acceleration with extentions.

lolz

EAX has nothing to do with Dolby Digital

Now, a days most games dont have EAX 5.0 sound tracks thats all I need to say...

And, before saying anything to as dumbo as you...please tell whether you have ever heard a xonar.....

Yes I had one. I bought it believing their emulation and OpenAL audio would be good, but it was not and didn't even give surround sound in half the games. GSDX was buggy as hell.

Again, games don't have to use additional EAX extensions to take advantage of the X-Fi. Even if the use they standard effects provided by OpenAL and EFX, the output is rendered much much better. The Xonar's OpenAL rendering and 3D positioning is bullshit. They have used lower quality algorithms (due to lack of a proper DSP or whatever) and it shows.

Classic exmaple: Dirt 2. It is pure OpenAL without EAX. When I switched from the D2X to the Titanium I was blown away by the improvement in this game. The engine sounds at a distance and how they fade away is simply not even present on the D2X.

When listening to music, there is NO OTHER FACTOR than simply the quality of the DAC chip. This is the only area where the Xonar is better ON PAPER. However I noticed no difference in the quality on my speakers. I assume you'll need really expensive cans to tell the difference. Complete waste of 14k.

I never said that xonar was better in games...

x-fi anyday better in games but in music and movies xonar hats off...

You can easily notice the difference because both of their sound signatures are a lot different...

Anyday, if your preference is gaming and in windows xp ....go for x-fi.. ( x-fi + win7 = lol...horrible )

But if your preference is movies and listening to music in windows 7...go with xonar...anyday..

That's completely unfounded claim. It works BETTER in Vista/7 than XP since everyone has finally standardized on OpenAL.

The X-Fi DSP chip (or the DSP in ANY sound card including the Xonar) only accelerates games, it has NOTHING to do with the quality of the DAC output that is used for music and movies. Since you are only concerned with DAC quality, there are MUCH better alternatives than some pseudo-gaming card like the Xonar. The M-Audio cards will wipe the floor with the Xonar, as they produce studio quality near flat frequency response output and similar quality recording. Same goes for the Auzentech cards.

The xi-fi music was the only card that failed in the creative lineup. It is/was a complete rubbish card. You are comparing a complete failure to a DX which is a good card. At most compare the dx to a xi-fi gamer if not titanium.
