Hey Gautam

Whats the best AT closed cans you can get for under 5k which can be powered by a portable device or a laptop? This is not for me. Its supposed to be a gift for my father in law.

Thanks!

Re: Audio Technica entry-mid level Headphones-AD300, AD500, M20, M35 ,T200 and T500.

Hello Soumyajit . If the options are limited to closed cans under 5k you can get choose between the M35 or ATH-T500 but the M35s need slightly more power due to 65 Ohms impedance and 100dB sensitivity and might not sound best out of a portable device. Comparatively the T500 are much more easier to drive.

The T500 is fairly comfortable as well but not portable like the M35. Within closed cans, the T500 is the best I can suggest you but if open cans won't be an issue you could consider the AD-500/AD300 as well . These open cans provide superior comfort and are ultra light weight .Something a senior person might appreciate . Only drawback is sound leakage .

Sound leakage is kind of a concern. The T500 works fine then. Is the price still the same as above? Please confirm so that I'm able to transfer it today itself.

Thanks!

Hi PristineNote,

Heard a lot about you about our other two TE members. Nice to have you here.

Btw, I in a dilemma between T500 and AD300. I dont really know much difference between these two. I would want to use a headphone mostly for gaming, movies and editing studio recorded tracks from my acoustic guitar an other acoustic instruments. I want to know about T500's portability.

^ In terms of design, the AD300 are open cans whereas the T500 are closed cans . Open cans are known for a more airy and wider soundstage . The AD300 provides the same with very clear midrange and detailed treble whereas the bass is not very powerful or lacks impact you can say . The AD300 also is extremely lightweight and you can hardly feel them on your head when you use them thanks to the 3D wing style headband .Also due to the open nature the sound leaks out of the headphone and there is not very high levels of isolation. Overall its well suited for long hours of movies ,gaming and classical music . If your music demands a lot of bass ,you wouldn't want to buy an AD300 and the T500 would be more suited.

The T500 being closed are not as airy as AD300 . They have better bass extension than AD300 and a pretty good mid + treble . The have more clamping force than AD300 as a result provide more isolation as well and very less leakage of sound . Brendon is currently reviewing the T500 so you could take feedback from him as well.

Both the AD300 and T500 are not very portable as there is no folding mechanism like the ATH-M35 / M50 . You can't carry them around on day to day basis unless you have good amount of space in your backpack .

Re: Audio Technica entry-mid level Headphones-AD300, AD500, M20, M35 ,T200 and T500.

^ Glad you like them .What soundcard / source are you using them with ? M35 are not that easy nor very difficult to drive. A portable player / on-board sound card will not give you best output but a decent entry level sound-card like Xonar DG or Xonar DX will surely make them sing :).

They are kind of dull when directly driven from the zune 80 or my phone, however, they sound great when the FiiO E11 is added in between...

but even without the AMP, the sound is great.. I love the way it handles vocals...
