Re: bad perfomance from hd 4850

2 points:

1. You're killing the system with the substandard psu. Damage is inevitable.

FYI, v-power=green star= Huntkey Titan 650 W. This should be mor helpful: http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/668/8

I've once sent an email to huntkey so that put a slogan. Huntkey- the one who gives you the BANG for your money and your system- Literally!!

2. You're using a very old drivers. Update it from ati's site. If you're wondering, drivers help.

You havent posted at what resolution you play, and if you are playing at the higher resolutions, stuttering can be resulted from low RAM, the games will need to save their buffer frames on the HDD. Also what gives you an indication, what your sys performance should be?

Yes , that Power Supply must be discarded even though it's not really the problem now but might cost you dear later.

Anyway ,

What resolution do you play these games at ?

And also monitor temperature of each component

Download HWMonitor -->Google it.

Hey dude, I am sure you browser has something called spellcheck :bleh:

Uninstall your current driver, google and install driver sweeper, run it, select ati and proceed further.

Restart the system, download the drivers again (for your specific OS-32/64 bit) from ati's site and install it properly.

Define "crash". Does it give BSOD? Not opening the installer in the first place? some error?

With respects, would you be able to lol it out when it damages, one/few/all the hardware components? You do realize that warranty is voided when the hardware is burnt and money will be wasted? Its pretty convenient to make a hardware a scapegoat rather than finding out the actual cause.

We know he has a bad PSU. But for posterity's sake: Would it be the real reason for low performance. It would either a. Supply regular, b. Supply regular and burn out and subsequently take down other stuff. So if he run it fine, his PSU is "not" causing the low performance. Though that does not mean, the OP should not change his PSU.

Seems more like a driver. What you all say...?

^^ Yep, what you say is correct, but driver installation crashing is intriguing, a poor supply does lead to a lot of system instabilities...

i ran occt on my system ... 30 minutes..
bought my whole system last month...

the system restarts with no prompt. when the ati installer starts installing..

i had ran memtest on my RAM before it gave me 172 errors... then i switched the slot of the RAM .. and then ran memtest ... no errors.. 19 passes... :O
this was 2 weeks ago..
bwfore switching my RAM to the other slot all my 3d games crashed after 5- 10 minutes in gameplay... all the games..
now they dont ... games i have are :

burnout paradise - 45- 60 fps maxed..
GRID - 45- 60 fps maxed
prince of persia 08 - 40 - 65 fps maxed with no AA
dead space - 70 - 100 fps all maxed
crysis warhead - 15- 30 fps with stutters ..high
far cry 2 15- 35 fps stutters.. ultra high
counter strike 1.6 - 100 fps.

Hmm. The card stats look fine to me. But you missed the main page of CPU-Z. Post it. Did you disable the Cool n Quiet feature from BIOS ?

nope cool n quiet is ON

added it .. says 800 mhz on idle

i have almost similar config as OP.

as you have mentioned, catalyst installation crashes when you try to install 9.11

the issue can also be with your OS, which we might be overlooking on to.

have you updated windows?

also, if you can source a good psu for testing from any of friends in your locality then that will certainly clear any issues regarding power. (sounds like an issue with power due to so much variation in 12V rail with and without load...but again, can't be so sure.)

well my OS is windows xp sp2 ... (non genuine) not updated... can this also be a culprit for low fps??
and i cant arrange for a test PSU .

by the way the CARD is clocked at 640/ 993 ....
underclocking my GPU can help .. is it risky??

default for 4850 is 625/993...

i have underclocked my card to 325/650 for idle operation and keeping it at stock for gaming.

use catalyst for clock change and there wont be any risk within the limits provided by the catalyst control center.

yes your un-updated OS can be an issue.

next time you system reboots this way... go to Administrative Tools within Control Panel.

Open Event Viewer

Look under Custom Views > Administrative Events

Look for any errors which lead to system reboot.

post them here.

This shall also clear certain thing.

See the results after disabling Cool n Quiet from BIOS. Observe any difference if any. In some cases, I found the processor was still running on 800MHz where as it should have increased its speed. Didn't try to know what the reason was though.
