Hey Guys,

Looking for a projector movie theatre kind of, although I do have a person from Onkyo who does allrounder kinda stuff ..gets everything.

But still suggestion would be great.

Its for watching movies [input from computer gfx] mostly and ofcourse tata sky.

I'm looking for anything with 1L range, which has DLP ..HD..HDMI etc etc.

Input your suggestions with prices and from where I can get in Delhi.

Regards

Generally, the markup on these kind of products is very steep. I bought a Marantz A/V receiver for Rs. 67,000 from a guy in Delhi. The MRP on it is around 90K. My local HT guy who is well reputed does not want to sell me the Marantz due to service issues and instead offered me Yamahas. Anyway, couple of months later when I was looking for some matching speakers, I went back to my local HT guy he wanted to know what receiver I will be pairing it with. When I told him much it cost me, he just smiled and showed me a quote from Marantz India for less than 50K for the same receiver.

I think it would be cheaper to go on a visit to Malaysia and get your DLP projector. You can have a free trip to Malaysia plus some spare change after the visit. Projectorcentral dot com is good place to start your research.

Hope this helps.

I just reviewed a 720p DLP projector by Vivitek - the D326WX. It's very good! Brightness is really good at 2500 lumens ANSI and there's HDMI connectivity. The price is an eye-sore though - it costs 1,00,000 in India officially, but is available for 35k on amazon.com. The Vivitek India link is Home Theater,Lcd Projector,Audio Visual Equipment,Dlp Projector,Lcd Projectors,Home Theater

I liked the D326WX so much that I did further research and picked up the Optoma HD65, another 720p DLP projector, but with a faster colour wheel and better contrast ratio from Amazon.com for 670$ including shipping ~33,000 INR. I'm guessing, it'll cost 90k+ in India judging by Vivitek's pricing.

Shrikant, how does marantz story compares to my projector need ?

You want me to go to Malaysia to buy a projector ? :P

I am not sure if your insulting me in your youthful exuberence or you truly don't get it or I might be losing my sense of humor as I get older.

The Marantz story: Well the point is that the price varies from dealer to dealer as the margins are generally very high. You need to double check and cross check the prices as you have not even narrowed to the brand forget the model. The moral of the story is that what seems to be a great deal initially might not really turn out to be one in Hi Fi items.

Going to Malaysia: Why not? You would get to chose a wider variety of projectors and often the latest models that are not available in India. It will turn out to be cheaper than buying in India even if you consider the ticket and hotel prices to Malaysia. My projector is beginning to show its age and I am planning to get one in a couple of years from Malaysia or Indonesia.

That's true, I agree with Skoka. Take the Vivitek projector as a case in point. Price in India: 1 lakh. Price in USA: 34,000 Rs. Air Ticket to New York - ~40,000. 2 Day stay: 10,000????? Total price = 34,000 + 40,000 + 10,000 = 84,000 INR. It's actually cheap to go to the USA, pick it up and come back!

Damm Damm, thats the huge point made out there.

& Shrikant no I'm not insulting you...I'm sorry if it felt that way. [even repped u for ur post]

eBay India: OPTOMA POCKET Pico DLP®CHIP Projector PK 101 1yr WARNTY (item 250499572541 end time 16-Oct-2009 15:41:14 IST)

I've called this guy and he told me he is authorized distributor of Optoma..So I've asked for quotation of HD20 and HD65, I think both are good projectors and then I will compare the prices with international pricing going on.

HELLO HELLO, is there anyone who have bought a projector recently..like 1-3 months ?

I bought my Optoma HD65 15 days back and it's coming in two days. Will give you an update once I get it in my hands.

you bought it via kmd ? how would you secure the warranty ?

how easy is lens changing part though ?

and is it better to be put on the ceiling ?

Nope, I got it via a visiting friend. There's no international warranty on the product: worst case scenario if something goes wrong, I'll request Optoma India to fix and I'll pay for the damages. It'll still work out cheaper! Lamp life is rated at 3000 hours, but I checked prices online and a new lamp costs around 8,000 - 10,000 bucks in India. That's not too bad at all, and lamps are not covered by the general warranty agreement as far as I know. Finally, I don't think installing a new lamp is that difficult. There are plenty of videos on YouTube mentioning how to do it. Maybe someone who's done it before can shed some light on the topic.

Raghav,

Based on your question I am assuming that you have a dedicated HT room. It really sounds cool to have a ceiling mount. After two years of using such a setup I think my next projector would be a short throw desktop setup.

The main problem I find is that even though I have conduited enough number of cables (HDMI, DVI, VGA, Composite & Component) through the ceiling, there always comes a time when you want a newer cable or a newer type of cable. The most common situation is when you are not happy with the video quality and someone will suggest to replace the cable. It is not easy to replace the cables through those conduits plus good quality HT cables cost a lot. It is cheaper if you use a desktop setup as you need a shorter length cable. It is also easy to swap cables. It is easier to clean the air filter and replace the lamps.

My next setup is definitely going to be a desktop version. Think of the pros and cons and decide the setup though I cannot think of too many pros for a ceiling mounted version.

Skoka, if you are using HDMI on a home theatre projector, then "good quality" cables that promise to increase the perceived video quality on-screen are a myth. HDMI is a digital standard and even the cheapest cables will perform as good as the best ones.

Well... that is not quite true. It is digital so it is has to be either 1 or 0 so goes the argument. The problem with a projector is that generally there are many cables that would run parallel including power cables. So there is bound to be interference. Hence you would need shielded cables which more expensive than the unshielded ones.

Interference or not, a 20 ft cable is more expensive than a 6 ft cable.

Another important point I forgot to mention was the lamp life. If you use the short throw distance then you can get away by using the economy mode on the projector which would result in longer lamp life.

Skoka, what you guys do about the wall ? Do you have that white curtain or something like which we have in class room ? I was thinking something which goes up n down automatically with a touch of remote.

Is there anyway guy in Delhi who can setup stuff ?

err Raghav just call up Ice will ya, he reviewed abt 10 projectors in the last article he wrote for LD i guess 4-5 months back

Yeah I'm gonna have talk with him again. I had small chit-chat with him and he doesn't know about Optoma projectors :D .. maybe he did what are popular in India only.

But I do think Optoma are popular in India too ? .. I'm thinking to get projector via KMD because they are too cheap in amazon and then getting it installed by some local guy who installs projector at places..

I initially brought a 120" Da-Lite high gain screen with glass beads. Unfortunately, it got some stains on it and I couldn't use it. I am currently using a cheapo screen that I got locally from my local HT guy for 10K. There are plenty of screen materials that are available even in India from stores that sell projectors.

The motorised screens are expensive. I use a 10 feet pull down screen. The max size I have seen for a motorized screen in India is less than 8 ft. Seriously it is not that difficult to pull down a screen though the oomph factor of a remote controlled motorized screen will be missing.

LOL raghav i guess someone at Epson saw this thread :p

Epson PowerLite Home Cinema 705HD brings Big Screen Home Entertainment

you cant go wrong with 37k

I agree, but I'm ready to spend more than that. When spending on 40 inch lcd costs 1 lakh then why not spend better for the projector ?

and that epson one aint even 1080p.... ye i know its 37k shouldn't expect so..

Skoka, can you provide me your HT guy number or something ?

Thanks.
