Beware! New ICICI Insurance Scam!

So this week I got a phone call which wasn't marked as spam by Truecaller hence received it. The caller info. shown was Icici, Prabhadevi HO, Mumbai something...Sandeep Singh 7042572633!

The person said that I have some Icici assured income plan policy from yr 2015 for which I haven't paid its premium for last year and hence policy is going to get lapsed post which I won't enjoy the maturity assured sum of Rs. 50L.
The premium is Rs. 50k which if unpaid until 7pm today the policy will get lapsed and I will be wasting my all earlier paid premiums and policy will be deemed cancelled.
Still, I will be receiving only some 2lacs earned during this period which will get credited to my icici a/c in the next 45 days and will be receiving a call for the same for further procedure.

He also gave me that policy no. 55825289

To pay the premium and learn more about the policy etc. he asked me to contact my policy RM/policy head person Ashok Kumar Tripathi on 9058368874.

Now, AFAIK I had never ever opted for any such policy and hence no Q of any premiums and if anything, I would have had such details.

Just for the sake of saying, I told them that my uncle handles my insurances and investments to which the callers kept pressing to have his no. and when I said he stays in the US he said no worries I will call him during US hours.

Just for a tp, tried the policy no. on Icici's website.

and this was anyways gonna show an error.

Again, after a few days I got call from the same office this time from Dheeraj Singh 9667921466 which I deliberately missed.

So, my motive here is to alert your family, friends, networks and contacts about such scams as the call might turn any person greedy and will loose his/her 50k or entire bank balance in the dream of receiving 50L next year.

I haven't updated Icici on this as I doubt they will even bother to take cognizance of such issues where they only keep saying jago grahak shit and to ignore such calls and blabla! (This is based on my past exp. with such authorities) So, instead of wasting time with them its better to invest some time here and alert the public directly!

Dont you think this detail (ICICI Prabhadevi etc. originated via Truecaller itself ?
Same name/contact details added to multiple devices across india, makes truecaller believe it is ICICI ..
though truecaller has nothing to do officially with ICICI unlike google search.

hope i am able to explain what i have in mind ?

For the ICICI credit card I have, i got calls for some 'moto international service' activation from last 2 months on my card for which 1570 amount will be deducted next month.

I thought he was talking about that international usage on my CC and told yes i have activated it but he said it's not the same and this is a different one and i will be charged 1570. So i told him to deactivate it. He said he will guide me through the steps upon which i didn't find any service like this. So now the guys says the new app version which they have has that setting and requested me to install it. There was no update on play store. Now he says he will send the new app on WhatsApp. I strictly don't use whatsapp but i had it installed due to a document needed to share in office at higher level. So he sent it there.

I use ESET in my all phones from last 5 years and upon clicking the app ESET first ever prompted me 'caution' prompt. I declined the installation. Later i told the guy that the app is not getting installed. He says to share an OTP with him or install ANYDESK on my phone. I started to feel negative at this point so asked my friend to search this number on Truecaller and it said 'Faguni Pathak' and had fraud alert. Guy calls me again if i don't install the app and deactivate the service he will continue to deduct the charge at the same moment.

Told him to don't call me again and my friend took over my device just to curse him with bad words(really bad words) and uninstalled Whatsapp right away. End of day 1.

After skipping 1 day i got call from another number. He started to explain me the same problem on my card and told me to open ICICI credit card app. This time asked 'which app you are talking about?'. He didn't even knew the name 'imobile pay' and told me to open the 'credit card app'. I asked him why you don't even know the name of the app? He started making unfair excuses. I hung up and added both numbers to block list. Here is the number of the first day caller. Usually i respect people's privacy but this is for fair purpose and you might want to block this number.

Anyone asking to install app over whatsapp or similar itself is a big red flag. Never do that, esp these days with banking apps.

This is the oldest scam ever about insurance.
The key red-flags here are:
1) They create a sense of emergency and give you very early deadlines to pay them.
2) They don't want to wait.
3) They usually give non-official links or methods to pay like NEFT/UPI etc.
4) They try to explain you the policy benefits in detail especially including maturity amounts etc. to make you think it's of utmost importance.

I haven't updated Icici on this as I doubt they take cognizance of such issues
Yes, ICICI is least bothered about security. I have some evidence, below, that they or their employees are involved in the scams.

Wow ! Something very similar happened to me. The Truecaller name of the caller was, no kidding "Pakhand mein bhi fake Pakhand".

I refused to install the WhatsApped apk, saying I'm not installing application from WhatsApp, the scammer said it's not an application. I had to remind him that I'm not an idiot, I know apks are applications. His next attempt was WhatsApp screen sharing scam, which also I refused, though they don't tell until the last moment that they want me to share the screen.

What is worrisome is that the scammer knew the details of my credit card statement - not much, but at least that credit card charges were just levied upon my account. Which is why ICICI or their employees are deffo involved.

lol. On a side note, most of these scammers are based in Chandigarh, Kolkata or WB and run by UK based nationals. They loot everyone - Indians, americans, british, canadians. nobody is safe from these scum. That's why in OP post the guy didnt mind calling at US times because he's sitting to scam people even in USA. Just one more target for him.

yup, when you install TC, there is no verification for anything you type in name field. I can type my name as Demon Lord and it will show my name as that to people i call. Not necessary that i am a real demon lord. I don't believe any TC caller id for this reason.
I'm dealing with spammers for a long time and I even received some CLEAN looking calls on TC mentioning Police commissioner of xyz etc. SO without delaying, I actually walked into my local Police station and also filed an FIR for such DCP/ACPs. Police also suggests better not to receive such calls as cyber crap has went beyond control tbh and daily they receive at least 3-4 local complaints of money frauds.

So yes, anyone can signup on TC with any identity, even Namo and some rural idiot will believe Namo actually called him asking to invest in some Gujarat projects for some lifetime investment.

Also, one cane easily make out the motive of the caller by simply analyzing his desperation and the motive.

Glad that you never fell for this scam and thanks a lot for alerting us.
Most times desperation, time in our busy schedule and fleeting moment, even highly knowledgeble people falls for it.

You mentioned that about TC installed person's name. What about contacts stored by them. I have this nagging doubt. Say Person 1 stores my name without initial, person 2 stores with full name and person 3 stores it by nick name and I am not using TC, what will be the name stored in TC call list if I call another person who doesn't know my name/no.

Received the same call but from Bajaj Allianz Insurance mentioning some policy number that is getting lapsed. I never did have any Insurance policy with Bajaj and just cutoff the call. Again received another call in couple of days and this time asked the lady at the other end to send me all the details of the policy through WhatsApp. She told that for security reason she will not be able to do that. I told her I know about this scam and not to call me again. Both the times the TC showed this as not spam and took the call believing that it is a customer/business call.

There is no logic. I'll give my own example. For obvious reasons, one and only one person in the world has saved my name as "Dear Husband". My colleague, female, first got my call as "Dear Husband", and was utterly confused. She had my number saved, but somehow her phone malfunctioned, and showed the Truecaller name. After that I checked, and yeah, sure enough, my name in Truecaller is "Dear Husband".

So while Truecaller is awful, it saves us from even more awful people.

This is both hilarious and scary at the same time. I mean to even think that a bank would personally send you a .APK file on WhatsApp is just comical. At the same time, a unsuspecting non-techie would get scammed in a heartbeat. Idk just how unethical one has to be in order to carry out such scams.

Yesterday I received another ICICI call as a last warning from a seductively speaking women..Anjali Rawat 87x4897xxx. She said I have invested 1 lac in that policy and will be wasting and loosing 50L if I dont pay current years premium, I said stf the policy or you keep it and get it transferred.

And then she came down to hindi in another seductive tone as if I'm gonna fall for her. I politely said "अपनी बातों से आप हमें खुश नहीं कर पाए, आप ही रख लो, आपके धंधे में काम आएगा" and disconnected! :tearsofjoy:

Anjali Rawat 87x4897xxx.
So you chose to censor her number.
(˵ ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°˵)

So you didn't fall. Hmmmmmmmm

What a policy though. Lol.

Tip: Relationship managers are not really what we think, they are sales agents with targets they need to meet. My father's credit card was lost, he called his RM who wanted us to apply for another cc instead of sending replacement! We called customer service, the rep sent a new card in no time.

Thanks for the heads up.

This is exactly why I have stopped answering ANY unknown numbers unless it shows up as a call from a company/person I'm expecting. ****ng scammers.
Wait till someone you know encounters a real emergency or you get a call from law enforcement official.

I'll take my chances. I won't answer 100 spam calls in the worry ONE may be genuine. I haven't received a call from law enforcement in 30+ years of existing (barring license/passport calls). I'll live.

Emergencies involving someone you know are something you'll recognize/get news of, the majority of the time.
