Car & Bike Bicycle suggestions

Are Firefox bikes any good.

After some reading, I think I would prefer a hybrid because of my current low flexibility. If Firefox ain't good can you please suggest some other options and where I can buy them from. I would obviously prefer buying from Chandigarh and hence the slight preference towards Firefox.

Budget - 10-20k

The RR5.0 is the only reasonably priced bike close to the lower end of your budget.
IMHO a hybrid is a bit of a compromise, not getting you the goods of either an MTB or a road bike.

Get the RR5.0 and swap out the tires for something thinner if you want to.

As far as not being 'flexible' enough. remember that you don't have to ride in the drops. The hoods and the bar are also perfectly acceptable positions to ride a road bike in. Have you actually tried riding a roadbike for extended periods of time?

I haven't. Though I can tell you it won't be a pretty sight because of how fat I am right now.
Also I plan to take cycling seriously as I have always loved it. Used to take part in competitive mountain bike races when I was in school. Though I wasn't serious for the sport at that time. In a few months I intend to start doing 100km runs. Keeping that in mind I was leaning towards hybrids as they have a less aggressive posture. Though I know that road bikes can also be setup for a less aggressive geometry by choosing a proper frame and saddle height.

Any guidance is much appreciated. The only problem that good road bikes will cost upwards of 35k. I intend to buy a hybrid under 20k now and then when I have become fitter, will purchase a road bike and pass on the hybrid to my brother.

If you are bent on buying 1 bike now and another later, I would again go back to the RR5.0 :)
That way, you wont be spending too much initially. If you decide that cycling isn't the thing for you, there'll still be the option to bail without a bigger financial hit that a 'hybrid' might entail.

I don't really have much to add though, since I personally believe that you will be neither here nor there with a hybrid. An MTB can give you a very relaxed posture, if that's your main concern (more relaxed than what might be attainable with a hybrid).

PS - since you asked, Firefox makes 1 semi-decent bike, the Target (MTB though).

As I mentioned before, I am currently using RR5.0....

It is classified as MTB but IMHO it is surely very comfortable to ride...(Decathlon classifies it as "Leisure-bike" ;))

Lastly, whichever bike you decide on, make sure you try it before buying it...

I am looking for a hybrid right now because they have the 700x23 tyres which are slim. Also these bikes can be ridden very fast as compared to the MTB, which is something I am looking for. I can also go for a road bike but from my little reading, I feel that is something I would like to do a custom built of and an expensive one at that.

After a few months I will be importing parts for the road bike and building it myself. That is something I have in mind. Since Firefox also sells Trek, I might just buy a Trek Hybrid for now and slowly keep buying parts for my road bike each month.

Trek and Bianchi are both popular for their premium hybrids. Hence, Trek 7.1, an entry level Trek hybrid would cost you upwards of Rs 27,000 - as per a LBS in Bangalore.

Yup. Trek 7.1 FX is listed for 26560 on the Firefox website. Let's hope I get a discount or some freebies at the local firefox store. I will also check out other local stores as well.

Make sure to get the bike of the right size for you. This is *very* important.

Visited the local FireFox Station today. To my pleasant surprise, the adult section comprised mainly of Trek Bikes. I could only see 2 Firefox bikes in the Men's section. All other firefox bikes on display were for kids.
Though they didn't have the 7.1FX on display, they ordered one for me. It should be here by Monday. I also asked them to order the fenders for it as well.

My LBS has only Canondale and that too will have to be ordered.

Sorry for off topic question.
Is it possible to fit good brakes to any cheap 5K bicycle ?
yes, but, you'll have to do extensive study on whats compatible, maybe do a bit of mods for it to fit well, and still be unsure. The costs will be as much as a decent cycle itself.dont trust these so called disk brake setups.even half decent ones start from over 7k.so,if you do find disks on a cheap bike, you can imagine how much cost cutting they do.

or maybe,if you get compatible brake pads, like 'koolstop' or decent OEM brakepads(oem of major brands/phoren brands) which will go with your current setup, the compound change itself will make a LOT of difference,if set up well. Also,RIm condition(i assume you have rim brakes) also matters.grease/muck/rust could play a big role in brake performance.

IMO you dont mess with brakes unless you have considerable experience with bike repair.best left to pro's,as the brakes are vital.finding competent bike servicers who dont use a hammer as a laakh dukhon ki ek dawa is another story in itself.

did you size it for yourself?dont go by the usual seat adjustment will fix everything.it wont.Firefox stations usually try to palm off anything and everything in stock,to clear it, on you, unless you know what you are doing.

I did sit on one of the 17.5" frames and it was appropriate. I checked online extensively and people with the same height as mine and the same inseam have bought the same size frame.

One thing I wanna ask is whether accessories and after market parts for Trek cycles are available easily in India or will I be looking to import most of the times.
I am looking to replace the arm grips and add sidebars on the handle. Also looking to buy a speedometer/cycle computer albeit would prefer one which has GPS and can track my distances, routes etc.

I bought a Rockrider 5.0

My accessories are worth more than my bike - Lights, Bag, Chain Lock, Helmet, Gloves (+ standard stuff like Bottle Cage, Mudguards, Stand)

great!so you did do your homework.

Trek parts are available at all firefox stations and i feel a tad too expensive, mainly because they are branded "TREK".you can contact other well established bike shops, and almost all components on a "TREK" are compatible with any other brand parts.
Simply put, bikes are like PC's (IMO),as long as any part is compatible,it will gel with the system.no imports needed unless you are into serious performance.and,a 7.1FX is quite good stock,so you wont really hanker after aftermarket parts

@blkrb0t,soon you will find yourself spending more on consumables like tires, bling, cleaning kits, lube etc etc etc...its one bottomless pit
and,how much did you pay for the bike?
