prime95 will stress your memory and processor for stability test ... drives are biggest headache for Windows :( ... try running system on ubuntu cd or live windows cd

if it's exactly related to your HDD or drivers then system should work fine with ubuntu

will have to get an ubuntu live cd..
dunno about windows live cd...what's that...
meanwhile updating all drivers& firmwares..

windows live cd is based on windows pre-install environment

lots of them are floating around on internet .. based on vista and may be win7 also now ... do post updates :hap2:

now that u have mentioned that u have WDC green ... check one more thread here --> http://www.techenclave.com/storage-solutions/theres-issue-western-digital-green-drives-152312.html

it may be your case
1.) lol...it's not..
I have checked my power-cycle and LCC values are similar,,,around 900 after 1year of excessive usage
BTW,did u scroll through end of the thread to read the summary:tongue:

2.) currently using Ubuntu 9.04 live cd.didn't start in the first go,but did in 2nd go.
the interface is so neat, minimalistic and simple.Iam amazed why I didn't try it before!!!

3.) Couldn't even download prime 95(win 7 was crashing badly)
is prime95 really needed, coz it's overclockers' tool and memtest's full test already gave zero errors.
I don't think CPU test is needed,,,

4.) Is there any tool for GPU and complete mobo test ..as those are perhaps the only components left..

5.)Now what???

first of all did u perform a bios flash from within bios as I said ?. Just download the bios update and save it in your harddisk. After that restart pc and update from wiithin bios screen itself. But before doing this ensure that your pc doesnt restart or hang in the bios screen itself...

and how do I ensure that,,,,

that pc doesn't restart or hang in the bios screen itself,,

I downloaded the bios update,,but I need a bootable disk for that...

Or else,,,as you said,,,save it to HDD and update from bios screen itself(how's that done???)

Or can be it done using the ubuntu live cd...am not very familiar with linux

Here is post for creating Win98/ME/DOS bootable USB drive for BIOS upgrade

DFI Club ?????? - DFI Club???? - Intel ???? ???(FAQ)????.????????. (????????????????) - How to flash BIOS by USB Memory Stick Drive ?

Once USB drive is ready ... extract your new BIOS files to it and boot from that USB drive and do upgrade.

But ... your system hanged on ubuntu??

Okay final suggestion. To make sure its software issue, just install a fresh copy of windows 7 in a diff partition do the tests you want. Then we can separate all the hardware issues.

Yes firefox crashed once and one another program crashed(which I don't know)
and system hanged on ubuntu 9.04 live cd after 4 hours or so of use.
also of 4 Ubuntu boots, only two were successful(the second one being this one)
And I had downloaded almost all the updated windows 7 drivers from respective manufacturers' website. And now after reboot they are not found on the desktop.
So, does anyone know where does the files on desktop while using Ubuntu 9.04 live CD are stored????

Do these things

1) Remove all unneeded devices from your system
2) Keep only 1 stick of ram, 1 hdd, remove graphic card if you can run on onboard, remove any usb drives attached, remove lan wire and then install.

BSOD are mostly because of drives and services that are trying to load in kernel mode but fail and thus stop the booting.

Try it again with windows 7 only in a new partition to avoid data loss

Do not keep trying to boot in the same windows cause BSOD's can cause you to lose data and in worst cause, your MBR may go corrupt thus losing every data in your HDD.

will remove lan wire,,
apart from that,,din't have any usb drives ,,,no onboard graphics...have only 1HDD,,,
will remove the Creative sound card though(creative sucks at making drivers:@)
no It doesn't stop the booting ,,most of the times win 7 is loaded and it crashes after that.
You mean to say windows 7...fresh installation.,,rite??
Iam thinking of vista now...but would do only when every other method in the book fails,,

Also,,,
tried to flash bios using bootable usb
but got this message: " bios is write-protected"

You are right. You do it when every method fails but what I am suggesting is not a clean install over the already existing one. Install it in a new partition to find what is the culprit. Everyone here is going on cribbing about ram and what not. We are trying to decide what is the cause.

Or you can try to do a repair install.

mate, did you notice on what date this is posted ?. Its in the early 2006 when sata hdds are not available . This method is for creating usb boot drives which work only with a FAT file system. Moreover the OP is having a SATA drive. How will win98/me/dos support SATA hdd ?.So its not possible to boot through this method..

Mate, no need to prepare bootable disks and all. Since yours is a latest motherboard, surely you will have an option in the bios itself. Just leave the system idle in the bios screen for sometime and check whether it restarts or hangs. Surely it will not IMO.

If your system hangs/restarts in the bios screen , then surely its going to hang/restart even if you update bios by booting through a USB drive.

So 1st leave the pc idle in the bios screen for sometime and check. If it doesnt restart, then look for an option which relates to bios update. Surely you will have one. All ur system partitions, files, etc will be visible there . From there go to the location where u saved the bios file and update it...

reply me if this helped u...

I have already done it.repair, didn't work..did an Upgrade also(didn't work) and then did a fresh format+installation(didn't work)
But I realised the frequency of crashes increased with every step.

^^ @ anfjavid : yes most of BIOS now give option to do upgrade from BIOS iteself ... but what that post shows is how to create bootable Win98/ME/DOS (ultimately it's DOS) USB drive ... which u can use for many thing ... one of them is flashing the BIOS

Win98/ME/DOS doesn't support SATA in Enhanced mode but then support in Legacy mode ... however in above BIOS upgrade HDD is not involved at all

@parasharenator : Man ... your case is extreme ... even if we assume it's driver problem with Windows then also it should work fine with Ubuntu but even that's crashing :@

I suggest to remove every unnecessary hardware and do BIOS upgrade

I did boot through this method.but was unable to flash,As I had said "Bios-write protected" error!!!

will try leaving bios screen in the idle state...
And I have checked almost all options on bios and I don't think there's an option to do that.
Still would try everything out n out today,,itself.
but it seems things are going worse and worse as we are digging deeper.
for getting to this browser page...
first the system wouldn't proceed after the bios screen display...stuck in there..
My current Boot sequence--USB,,DVD ..HDD...(USB and dvd were empty)
Then I did a restart and inserted Ubuntu live cd,,after 2-3 unsuccessful attempt of booting into ubuntu,,did I get thru,,
So,are there chances of faling HDD,if yes.let me know a boot based HDD test..As Iam not very familiar with hdparm on linux.

as someone pointed out to me,creative sound card (would remove that) may be the culprit,,rest everything is pre-requisite
but yes the case is getting extreme,,read my above post,,and Iam getting frustrated now:@,,,even though normally I won't,,
And the bios update didn't happen...
As mentioned earlier,,found out the correct bios version as per my CPU and mobo,
got "Bios is write-protected" error as per your method...
And MSI's live-update(directly downloading thru net, followed by a reboot--flashing the bios--reboot) method wouldn't work either as it's an exe(dunno how to make that work on linux) and As you had advised,Iam not going through live-update while in windows 7,,as system may crash anytime...

I downloaded one of BIOS for MSI P45 Neo ... it's AMI BIOS ... I guess the version of our BIOS is newer than the BIOS u have downloaded .. that's why err is coming

one more possibility is that ... there might be a jumper near your flash chip for write protection of BIOS

Verify the command switches below ... I have copied them from AMI website ... run AFUD4310.EXE /? to see if they r valid

Try to use /F option if you r sure downloaded BIOS correct

I guess this would be correct command for flashing your BIOS

AFUD4310.EXE ROMFILE.ROM /P /B /N /C

and with force option in case of err it would be

AFUD4310.EXE ROMFILE.ROM /P /B /N /C /F

before doing upgrade, do make a copy of original BIOS

First, tell me How do I make a copy of my original BIOS.....
yes,,correct AMI bios.and mobo model MSI P-45 Neo (MS-7519)
Also Core 2 Duo E8400 C0 stepping,corresponding BIOS version was v1.4
Current version is v1.2
Now,there also a bios version v1b(something) this is the latest one..but I downloaded v1.4 the one mentioned in a table corresponding to my CPU,as per the instructions for flashing AMI Bios.
The jumper option I didn't check. But there was a setting in BIOS for BIOS flash protection, disabled that.
then booted through the bootable USB
and did this
afud4310 A7519IMS.140
and got this error "error reading file"
Now I don't know whether this is the rom file you are referring to,but apart from the afud4310.exe the rest two are documents,,so I suppose this one should be the rom file,
AND,
now Iam going to install Vista.check if that works,,
