I was using my pc as usual suddenly the whole desktop froze nothing was working so i pressed the restart button. The OS wouldnt boot it kept saying boot device not found. When i checked the BIOS settings it clearly shows my hard disk in the sata port but when i go to the boot device priority it doesnt mention the hdd name it just shows as 'hard disk'

I tried changing the sata cables and on port 1 and 2 still dint work then i removed the dvd drive port and connected the hdd there and now its working. Is this some hdd prob or prob with my mother board?

Your HDD may be dead.PC freezing suddenly may be a sign of that.Plud the hdd into another pc and scan with hdtune. If you restart a few times you might get lucky and hdd might work again.

Check if the HDD i still detected in the BIOS, if not that you can try re-fitting the cables for the HDD.

And if it is detected under BIOS, and the OS can't load then, the MBR of the HDD might be corrupt due to improper shutdown

Hdd is detecting in the BIOS as my above post already states. From the time i posted the topic till now pc is working fine.

What i am wondering is maybe the other sata port was not working. is that right or should i go ahead with checking the hdd with hdtune?

@CA50 what us the MBR you are talking about and how do i rectify it if it is corrupted

To tag members use # before the name, like #CA50.

As for your query about MBR, this is what it is --> http://en.wikipedia....ter_boot_record.

And if you suspect it is corrupted, I think following will help --> http://technet.micro...y/cc977213.aspx / http://www.hardwareh...w-do-i-fix.html /

#benryu, what is your OS, if you are using windows, then boot from the windows installation media. Go to recovery part, find cmd and type fixmbr or fixboot, this is rectify any issue related to mbr and boot

#CA50, i am using Win 7 Professional 32 bit. What do you mean by boot from windows installation media? is it the CD/DVD if so i remember seeing only install and repair options.

#benryu I too had faced the same problem with my old PC. I downloaded Hiren's boot CD and made it bootable through USB drive. There are many tools which can aid you. My fix was to use the "Fix missing NTLDR option". Before that i had a run a HD test utility and it found 2/3 error sectors too.

#benryu, Ok mate boot from the windows 7 DVD, next you will find the repair your computer option, click on it. next stage there will be some repair modes.

Click the 1st one "Startup error" , the error will be scanned and repair will be attempted. Upon repair you will be asked to restart. Do as prompted.

If the problem persist, then you can select the command prompt, and punch the dos commands posted earlier

Ok i will first check my HDD for errors. Is there any other software other than HD tune because its not a freeware

First you can use HD tune for checking your HDD for error. Instead of the paid version go for the free version, its good.

Second, i doubt that the HDD will have some error, in these type of cases, the culprit is either the mbr or, some of your boot files have gone for a walk

as i have said before, the HDD is not the culprit. Its should be some of the system files
