Storage Solutions Brand new HDD gone kaput - so much for reliability

Spectre

I just bought a sealed WD Green 1TB WD10EARS 64mb harddisk

Guess what, whatver I copy starts well, and the speed keeps dropping down and finally hangs

First, i thought its a enclosure problem(which is also new), but fixing the HDD directly also caused the same

So much for WD's reliability :@ I am feeling sick now, wanted to dump all my backup data to it today.

Will WD replace with a brand new piece or some refurbished one. If the latter, than all the more reason to feel F'ed up

Can we claim DOA from dealer. In my case it was Cbay/MH

You should just take it to the dealer cause its DOA and not the service center. Ask the person you bought it from to get it replaced for you.

incase if shipping charge is involved in DOA.. i would suggest going via normal rma process.

you will save on shipping and will take maximum 7 business days.

or if your dealer is ready to ship the replacement as soon as you ship and product docket number...and shipping is affordable then you might be able to save upto 4days.

Write to WD India & ask them specifically for brand new instead of Certified Repaired HDD since its very much a new HDD...

These things happen.. bad luck I must say but I suggest to everybody. Always test HDD (even new) with some HDD tools before starting to dump your data... I use Ontrack Easy Recovery 6. It has some nifty HDD testing tools which lets me know if its reliable to start using the HDD...

So far it had worked for me (touch-wood)... not 100% foolproof but still better than no testing at all.... :)

Thanks guys! for all your suggestions. appreciate that :)
I have written to MH to replace immediately, if feasible to him, since i need it urgently

I had the same problem it could be easily fixed by changing something in the hd drivers settings,

The solution that worked for me:

1- download this

2- Execute that script, even if windows pops up any warning just say yes

3- Restart you pc and test if it worked or not

If this doesn't work try the manual approach described in here DMA reverts to PIO | Windows Problem Solver

give some feedback on how it works out ;)

this fized it for my seagate hdd, tell me if it does for you brother

Hi,
I have same CPU+mobo+RAM as of you.
In past few months I've noticed that no WD hdd works properly with my system, but they work well with other systems.
I had same problem as, the copy process would start normally won't complete.
I've tried WD320 GB, 2x WD 1GB

All sealed, unformatted.
bought from Prime.
All above HDDs are working fine in my friends' systems.

I think it's b'coz of IP35-E, but I see many guys using WD hdds with this mobo.

B4 sending it back to WD check it on different mobo.

Aman27deep and Ashish - Thanks guys for your replies :)

But did you notice in the screenshot, that the HDD is reporting bad sectors. don't you think its a bad harddisk rather than a system fault
Also, on P35E, i have 640GB Blue running perfectly fine as the primary one.

you can claim brand new WD HDD from the dealer you brought,WD offers 30days for DOA for resellers/dealers.So if it fails as DOA they are requested to replace another new from stock.No need to RMA via WD.Please rush to your dealer now.Dont wait further !

^ hey septre for me to even claim the Replacement from WD i will need ur hdd and give it to them to claim the replacement and i spoke to them they say even i will have to go thru the normal route . anyways if u want u can send it back to me . i will send it into wd rma and once the replacement comes in send it to you.

I dont understand whats happening here.

Current course of action:

Spectre -> Mediahome ~ 2days

Mediahome -> WD ~ 1day

~ WD usual Rma process ~ refurbished hDD ~ 3-10 days

WD -> Mediahome ~ 1day

Mediahome -> Spectre ~ 2days

Total ~ 9-16 days

Preferred course of action:

WD onsite warranty (at spectre's residence) ~ 1day

If its within 7 days get a direct replacement from Dealer. My HDD developed SMART errors (Seagate) within 5 days of purchase had to have a bit of struggle since he said all drives have this and I told him to check with a new one and show me finally he succumbed and gave me a new one.

Thanks MH, i was actually looking for a DOA immediate replacement from dealer as it happens locally. Looks like its not the case :(

I have raised an RMA ticket with WD and was assured i will get a brand new HDD as replacement. They have also scheduled a courier pickup tomorrow morning itself and also told it would be replaced in 2 working days after they receive it

I also sent a strong email to WDC India support ID
sato, I dont understand this WD onsite warranty ~ 1 day. Whats that ??

Have you ever sent a WD drive for RMA using their RMA policy? Your theory and Preferred course of action seems like you haven't. Please stop suggesting such daft ideas!

WD takes at least 10 days to have the drive replaced. After registering the RMA request at the website, the courier service picks up the defective drive and sends it to New Delhi for RMA. It takes about a week to 10 days for WD to send the replacement drive to the doorstep via the courier service.

Exactly...I don't understand what's the confusion here? Spectre, Isn't your dealer ready to replace your drive with a fresh piece? He should be ready. There is no need to send back for RMA and get a repaired drive and all since it is DOA. You should get a fresh piece. I have a good rapport with my dealer here and I have done the same.

Yes, my bad. Never used WD but heard alot about their quick onsite warranty.
Putting DOA replacement into the equation, i thought Onsite warranty wont suffer from the usual RMA procedure and they would replace the hard drive with a new one immediately. This would be just the preferred/ideal course, obviously theoretical as i said. But cant the practical version be taken in this direction?
EDIT: I just read spectre's post. He has already taken a step in this direction.

So, i guess Desecrator you need to get your information sorted out before insulting someone else' suggestion. :tongue:
:peace:

My Dealer didnt provide immediate replacement. I have to wait for a WD replaced one from him after sending the faulty one.
Instead of which, getting it directly replaced by WD sounded sensible to me, same timeframe and saving shipping costs

Did you ultimately get the replacement within 2 working days as promised by WD?

@sato: Your practical/theoretical/ideal/preferred steps seems really stupid at times. Get over it already! If you haven't or aren't sure of a suggestion, refrain from posting it instead of confusing the OP himself and the rest of the members.

This was one of your epic suggestions by far!
