Graphic Cards BSOD when idle because of my 5850?

Hey guys, I am experiencing some problems with my computer, and I'm guessing that it's due to my gpu.

My computer runs absolutely fine when im using it for gaming or watching movies or whatever. However, everytime i leave my computer idle for a prolonged period like leaving it on overnight to finish my downloads, I get a BSOD after a while. Again, this happens only when my computer is left idle, not when I'm using it. I'm guessing it has something to do with my MSI 5850 ebcause when my TV and monitor are both plugged into my computer, I get occassional screen flickering on my secondary screen (my tv). I have the latest ATI CCC installed (10.3 i think). However, I am planning to uninstall it and then do a driver sweep in safe mode and then reinstall the latest CCC just to see if this problem stops.

Has anybody else out there had the same problem? Because I'm really hopeful that its not a hardware malfunction :(

Any help with this would be appreciated.
 
there is a possibility that under power options your monitor has a turn off time just check it

DOES THE BSOD "GO OFF"(AS I MUST SAY) WHEN YOU PRESS A KEY OR MOVE THE MOUSE IF NOT THEN I DONT THINK THAT ITS THE POWER SCHEME BUT IT GOT SOMETHIN TO DO WITH THE POWER SCHEME(DAMN IM CONTRADICTING MY OWN STATEMENTS) :rofl:
 
I don't think its due to GPU. if so you should get BSOD while gaming. if its during downloading check the lan driver or the software you are using for downloading. and remove TV from gpu for a while.
 
nope, nothing under the power scheme. my computers not supposed to sleep, neither is my monitor supposed to go off when idle.

the BSOD happens only when my computer is completely idle, that is, when I'm not using it at all. no keyboard being pressed, no mouse being moved. It hasn't occurred even when I watch a movie (which means I'm not using my mouse or keyboard while the movies being played). It just randomly happens when I'm away from my computer and my computer is completely idle graphics-wise i guess (my torrent dnloads continue behind the scenes at almost all times).
 
Try disabling downclocking the pci-express bus when in the systems in idle. You should find it in the advaned power options. I had a similar problem with my system, and that fixed it.
 
Also it is possible the BSOD's could be due to some other component, like your hdd's, or your ram.
Run a scandisk, hdtach, hdtune etc to check for errors on your hard drives, and run windows memory check when you boot up windows to see if theres a problem with these components.

Could you give me instructions on how to do this? I can't seem to find where i can do this.

Also, on a side note. Ive run Memtest and there seems to be no problem with my RAM and have even checked my HDD and PSU. No problems there. I'm inclined to think its GPU related for some reason because this happens only when im not using my computers video (only happens during my overnight downloading). If it was some problem by another part, it would surely happen anytime i would browse, or even when I'd watch movies or game.

Stressing my GPU causes no problem whatsoever, but when i dont use it much, that seems to cause the problem.

If someone could tell me how to disable downclocking the PCIe bus when my system is idle, I'd appreciate it =)
 
i assume you're using windows7.
go to control panel > system and security> power options, (you'll probably be using the balanced setting)> change plan settings > change advanced power settings > pci express> link state power management > turn it to off.

Thanks. I'm going to try this when I get back home. will leave my computer on overnight. Hopefully, this should do the trick!

OH wait, two monitors???

What's ur idle clocks???

Do you know how to edit CCC Profiles?? If yes, Change the idle values to 400MHz Core and 900MHz Memory, your flickering should be solved.

If you don't know the procedure, wait up, I'll search for it, it's been posted in this forum just a while ago...

^^ Yes, i got that but i didnt understand which values to change. If by core he meant the GPU cock settings to 400, thats not possible as u can see the minimum value i can put is 550 and Memory value minimum is 900 which he suggests.

I just wanted to confirm before doing anything stupid with my new card :S. It's a lil obvious by now that I'm no pro overclocker or extreme techhead really for that matter.

I've changed my advanced power settings as per Iamdevil's recommendations. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for it to work. gonna leave my comp on overnight hoping that it doesn't BSOD on me..

It is pointing to a athrxusb.sys application set. This is usually for wireless adapters. You have any wireless component attached (wifi dongle or such)...?

Also just to be safe, try your accelerator in another system. Also do you have VLC player installed. Remove that. Once dump showed that causing an error, but I doubt you would leave it on at night.
 
Yes, I do use a Belkin Wireless G USB to catch internet on my desktop. If the driver for my wireless USb causing this stupid BSOD? It makes sense because my wireless is definitely on overnight for my downloads.

I was having problems with my wireless USB when i got it because the old drivers on the cd werent comptaible with Win-7, leave alone 64-bit. I had a couple of installs/reinstalls before finally getting the correct driver online and I guess that is what is messing my system.

Can you suggest how do I fix this error?

Thanks so much asingh. you're a lifesaver =) You can't imagine the stress of seeing a BSOD on your computer which is barely 3 weeks old

Not really sure. Seems like a legacy device, and the driver is not compatible with Win7. Just to make sure, why do you not, connect the net cable directly to your RJ45 input on the back panel. Test it for stability. Saying this so you have a stable system. IT COULD be something else right.

You installed the latest chipset drivers for your board, from the official website. Try that too. But overall to check for stability, and isolate the malignant device, try LAN connectivity without a wireless adapter. Best I can say.
 
^^ I think you misunderstood me. The cd i got with the USB had old drivers which werent compatible with win 7. i had installed them and the usb failed obv, so I uninstalled it and then went on the website and dnloaded the latest driver which was win 7 64-bit compatible. the reason i have a wireless usb is because I cant get a lan cable to reach my room =(

Is there a way I can manually sweep the driver off my system just to make sure the driver files dont stay on my system when i uninstall it? I can do that and then reinstall the driver and hope it works.
