Hello ppl,

Well , as the title speaks for itself ...m making a home theater room in our new house..
need suggestions in regards to wat items to use....

whether to use a plasma , led , lcd or a projector !
what kind of setup to go for.....

The size of the room is 300 sq ft ( approx )
the height of the room is around 12 ft....

the seating plan is as follows :

2 recliners in front of the screen at a distance of about 12 ft...
2 sofa's on each sides....

the setup will be used for :
* Movies
* Football / Cricket Matches
* Console gaming
It will have carpet floor not a wooden floor...
The budget for the Display and the Muzik system is gonna be Rs. 100k - 120k

please try to stay away from the brand *SONY* in ur suggestions...

For the setup I was thinking of Denon / Onkyo / yamaha / Pioneer...
I might use a HTPC as well...so....

I need to decide on this asap....

thanx for your Inputs in advance...

Is the budget of 120k for the TV/Proj + AVR + speakers? I suppose u want atleast a 5.1 setup considering ur preferences,right? Are u fine with HD ready setup or Full HD is a must? Coz a Full HD projector setup alone can easily eat the full budget u have set apart,if purchased locally.

Well , I would really want to go for a FULL HD setup with 7.1 if we can squeeze it in the budget , coz I aint gonna keep upgrading the setup every year...This thing will be final.

So , I want to install whatever is must..

The main question is , which is better -> a projector setup or LCD/LED ?

PS : we can stretch the budget to 150K max ( that wud be the upper limit )

Well,to answer which is better is not possible bro....a projector setup is not meant for daily viewing like TV.Their lamp life usually is around 3000 hours,which sometimes can fail prematurely if not taken care of.In that case, u have to shell out anywhere from 15k - 30k for a lamp replacement.So,broadly speaking, the running cost is rather very high as compared to a TV whose expected lifetime is around 100,000 hours.As such, projectors are best suited for occasional watching and require a dedicated setup to get the best out of them.Lighting has to be very well controlled to avoid losing picture quality.

Am on the same boat as yours,and last i checked, an Optoma HD20 FullHD projector costs around 1.05L with bill and warranty.Its a very decent purchase and can produce awesome quality picture.Then u have to get a good screen and u have to set apart around 10-15k for the same(can get decent 100-120" manual pull-down screen in this budget).Once properly setup in a light controlled environment, this can do wonders to ur viewing experience paired with an awesome audio setup, but the planning and will to take the pain has to be there.

Another option is to get the Optoma projector in grey market for around 60-65k, but i won't recommend that if u are not familiar with it.

If going for an LCD/LED,I would recommend u wait for the 2011 products to launch and make an informed decision in the coming months.U might be able to get a 46inch LG/Samsung 3D LED TV for 1L or u can go for a 50 inch Plasma TV from the same amount.

On the speaker front, best option would be to go for an AVR + separate speakers,but then budget could encroach 50k mark.Honestly, for a 20x15 room, 5.1 should be simply more than enough if u know how loud these can get.With the separate path, u can always upgrade ur speaker numbers as and when u like.If budget is tight, u can go for a HTiB setup with satellite speakers for as low as 25K and should suffice ur needs.

Do make sure u audition a number of brands before coming to a conclusion as to which one suits ur eyes/ears and pocket.

Kool , so the Projector setup is out ! its gonna be LCD/LED.....Thanks for the info....well even I had the same pov on the projector setup...but some1 was insisting hence I included it in the list....

About the audio....yes...i will get the AVR separately and the Speakers separately...But have to finalize on the setup...coz if it is not available locally I will have to import it myself.

I only have this month left...the inauguration is in june 1st week :P...so kinda in a rush .

^^then do start some auditions over the weekend,better if u can take ur wife(if u are married that is :D ) Check out LG 47LE9500 local dimming LED with 3D,MRP is 2L but in the other forum,couple people have been quoted 97k for the same at banglore.So, u can always bargain and see.

Also,check out Yamaha 367/467 Denon 1311/1611 Onkyo 508 with various speakers packages.U should be able to get anywhere from 10-15% discount on MRP and further more,depending on ur bargaining skills.

Honestly.. considring your usage... go for a projector and a good 5.1 speaker setup...

You can now get a good full HD projector for around 80 - 90k... Pick that up and get the Logitech Z5500 or Z906..... trust me.. you dont need anything else.... :)

Go to a local shop in Indore and you will hear this
" SONY is the besht, sirji. onkyo to gujraat mein khate hai aur yamaha to bike banati hai !!"

lol...I know that....I clearly mentioned that I do not want SONY....I am kinda anti-sony / apple :P ( dont rant me for that :P )

coming back to topic , I have the options for the AVR's...but I need some options for the speakers...any suggestions??

Ok, something that I missed.....the setup will also be used for occasional tv viewing ( saas bahu types / mtv / cartoon network )....So is the projector still ok?

+ the main thing -- the full HD projector setup will cost about 110-120k itself...leaving very less to be spent on the speakers + avr.....wat now?

I can stretch the budget to 150kz max.....anything over and above will have to go with real good explanation on my part ( my folks gave me a budget of 125k )...

saas bahu types and raghu pm MTV is cause dead pixels..beware
