Android Call recording mess on Android | What to do going forward?

Sorry didn't get what you meant here... You just need to root your phone... Why go through whole custom rom if you don't want to... Plus once rooted any rom should be able to help...
Was surmising that you could use a ROM from a country that did not have this call recording restriction

Admittedly your solution is easier as google phones can be rooted.

No. Not like that. ROM is same everywhere. Features get unlocked based on geo location.

Here's my best suggestion..
Flash a custom rom.
Temporarily root your phone.
Patch google dialer (some apk/file has to be replaced in the dialers root directory)
Unroot your phone.
It's not a practical solution mate. Here are some of the problems,
  1. Most people can't do it.
  2. Custom ROMs are buggy and there's no support or update available all the time.
  3. Like I said patching Google dialer doesn't work most of the times.
  4. Mere unlocking procedure wipes the device which is a massive inconvenience.

Have u tried the Oneplus 8 or Oneplus 8Pro dialer, Google it download the Oneplus OG dialer and install should work easily.
I don't think it's that easy like installing an APK.

Secondly, from Android 12, the Google has removed the microphone access to all apps during a call systemwide. So that dialer isn't going to work either way. It works on Samsung because, I guess, it built the backbone system for recording.

Similar support could be found on Chinese or EU Xiaomi ROMs.

If it is an Android OS wide block then I don't think there is any other option apart from rooting.
No idea if this works -
It says that it supports mic based recording as a fallback. It is also available at Fdroid.

Gone are they complex days.
These days its as simple as setting up your phone. Just enable developer mode and adb thats it! Flash custom recovery from windows cmd, boot into recovery, flash rom without wiping anything. (follow rom steps but 99% are same unless specified)
I can suggest good rom. The default rom to patch is Pixel vanilla which everyone opts for as its totally safe aka replica of pixel phone and stable google updates.
Patching works 150%, just have to replace the apk file in rot thats it. Unroot and alls stable and safe.
If current stock update and the rom to be patch is same then no wiping of sata required. This is called dirty flashing. Works fine!

Unlocking the bootloader is still a messy process on most of the devices.

I'm gonna have to disagree. Flashing custom roms nowadays include too many variables. There're ext roms then there are non-ext. Some require their own recovery some can work with twrp. Developers aren't helpful. Installation information is vague. There's no real testing done so first people who install it have to report like camera isn't working. Developers on the other hand falsely claim that everything is working.

What google updates? Developers usually abandon it in a few months. Pixel roms, even though they are smooth, are downgrade compared oneui or miui. They miss out on a lot basic functionality. Plus Google Pixels themselves have big security holes. We can expect such bug get followed in custom pixel roms and not really getting fixed. Google security updates are a placebo jokes.

It is still not meant for everyone. You would always be dependant on the developers/maintainers which is completely different compared to the OEM. Unlike an OEM, this is not their primary job and if they abandon it, then you are done. Plus there would be scenarios where some or the other banking app may not work. Do you think you will get any support for those edge cases ?

TWRP is outdated long back, its now only OrangeFox. Installation steps/info. is 99% same for all roms unless specified.
Devs only offer support on telegram group, if nobody knows, 60% xda has migrated to telegram due to devs offering live support there.
Choose a rom by revising its recent or entire history, how often is it updated etc.
And at one end if you say roms are a downgrade compared to others/stock and google security updates are a placebo jokes then here no one can help not even google. No point blaming these 3rd party devs.
They are the one who offer you all latest bells and whistles when the official updates cease/discontinued by the brand and even when you want to use the yesteryears phone today it struggles and isnt compatible.
When you say google itself is a joke then nothing can get perfect beyond it!

Oems will dump your phone in 2 years and esp they f*ck up your phone badly with the lat update forcing you to buy another phone. No matter how precisely you maintain your beloved phone, you have to let it go for peanuts in exchange policy! While on custom roms you can keep using the latest OS until the last dev. dies or the earth officially abandons your phone or your phone dies!

Banking app issues only occur when rooting isnt done properly else there's hadrly any reason for them to not work.

All these are words from a custom rom user since a decade!

Except for magisk (since last yr when magisk started having safetynet issues) have never actually suffered or struggled! Rest its ones choice.
Unlocking the bootloader is still a messy process on most of the devices.
For MI etc. its officially supported by the brand itself.
Messy only for samsung may be.

Off-topic but again, while it may be the case for someone like you who has decades of experience, it is not for everyone and definitely not for the majority of the folks, who neither have the knowledge / time / patience for doing this and then jump to Telegram for support if something does not work. OEMS will force obsolescence but I have never faced any situation where the phone stopped working (I still use a LG G8X on stock). Your choice to continue to use / throw / exchange. Moreover once the official support stops, there will not be any device specific "security" updates so custom ROMs will be left behind.
If you have Pixels, Calyx OS or Graphene OS are privacy focused and much more better and secure alternatives than custom ROMs

Not downgrade but not bug-free and you're at the mercy of the dev who needs time to fix it if he ever gets around to it.

These ROMS are not optimised for battery drain either, how can they be, they are a work in progress.

Your drain will be over 1%/h unless you kill a lot of things. Or stick to stable builds which i think you do anyway.

For select flagship phones, yes. They don't do ROMS for midranges otherwise see above.

So which phone do you have?

Frankly cannot stop laughing at this!
Primarily custom roms are in fact optimized for battery life and rich feature which otherwise not found in stock rom!
My idle overnight drain isn't more than 1 or 2% nor I kill anything manually. The os is per-optimized. No bloatware no shit running in background!
As said on telegram devs respond immediately just like a whatsapp chat and in fact there is more than one dev in a group as many devs share a common kernel patterns and if an issue is identified in a particular rom the same is per-patched in the next release or if its a major issue an immediate patch is released within a eek or so..
So which phone do you have?
Redmi note 7 pro...right now on Android 12 and soon will be upgrading to Android 13. No issues these 4 years at all..
Journey from Android 9 to 12 and soon to be 13!

Am going off the logs I see posted in the BBS thread. All kinds of ROMS for all sorts of phones.

You must be one of the lucky ones then.

I have been using custom ROMs since lollipop and currently using pixel os android 13 custom rom as a daily driver. Previously, I was using MiUi 12 based on old android 10. Pixel android 13 although very smooth, is missing some practicality of that old MiUi.

In the old days, custom roms did add more features that was missing from the stock roms. That was possible because Google used to add a lot of feature between major Android updates. But this is not a case anymore. There's hardly anything that separates android 13 from 12 apart from some UI tweaks.

I'm using custom ROMs but still I don't suggest the same to other people. The time wasted in researching different ROMs and fixes can actually earn someone a new phone altogether.

I too tried True Phone.
It records your voice very clearly but you can hardly hear the other person's voice. Uninstalled it.
