Car in mumbai

Why didn't I think of posting here before
I'm looking for a regular sedan. Problem is its my own cash for this one, no home financing. Also its for mumbai use, so handling should be decent. Parking space isn't a problem in navi mumbai as yet, so size no constraint.

@ home I'm used to a zen and a safari 3.0l so this is pretty much unknown turf.

cause of the above limitation I'm restricted to around 5L. Initially I was looking for seconds but family disagreed. I was looking at a Ford Flair or an accent 1.4/1.5 mainly cause of the budget. Was also looking at a fiesta 1.4 but its too costly.

My reasons for the cars -

flair was the handling and the back seat (may need to taxi GF's parents around mumbai :P )

Accent is plush and comfy, but not a good drivers car...
Firstly is a second hand worth it? How much should I be expected to pay for one?

Or should I go new?
I'm open to options both ways (new or old) but 5L is pretty much the upper limit, unless I wait for 4-5 months :(

hmmmm..dont know but have u thought of the new tata indigo...the looks arent very good.but have heard that its a good car..and very comfortable form inside..

it maybe slightly .above u r budget ...

and by the way where do u live in navi mumbai ?..CBD ?

u gonna use the car on regular basis for reaching u r work place..or just gonna use it occasionally ?

i guess you are budgeting for 5-5.5L

in which case you should be looking at premium hatchbacks than low-end sedans....

if you want to buy a decent sedan , the minimum you should be looking at is a fiesta 1.6/verna xi/aveo 1.6...(all at 6.5L +)

anything below that would be a compromise

on the other hand, you could pick up a fully loaded Swift Zxi/getz or a palio which would anyday be better buys than a compromised sedan...

given the fact that at your age, you don't (presumably) really need the extra boot space, a hatchback would be a better buy

5L and you want a Sedan. Here are your options:

1. Tata Indigo (Diesel Ls/Lx)

pros:

Comfy, spacious, fuel efficient

cons:

TATA image, unreliable (hearsay), higher maintainance

2. Ford Ikon Flair

pros:

Easy to drive, comfortable, spacious

cons:

Outdated, Ford after sales not so good.

3.Maruti Suzuki Esteem

pros:

Superb performance, Fuel efficiency good for a petrol Sedan

cons:

Lack of space, flimsy build, outdated.

4.Ford Fiesta 1.4 L (slightly over your budget)

pros:

Decent performance, comfort

cons:

Not so exciting looks, Ford after sales not so good, Fuel efficiency not reported to be decent.

5. Mahindra-Renault Logan (To be launched in April in both Diesel and Petrol variants)

pros:

Highly fuel efficient, most modern diesel in this price range. Tried and tested car all over Europe. As spacious as the Corolla at half the price.

Cons:

Outdated looks, poor quality of plastics, cost cutting in interiors and exteriors, Mahindra service in Urban areas not so good.

Now make your choice!!

buy an auto and keep a driver lol that works best

dawg :P
So no goers for the flair? Drove one a few days back seemed decent...

Chaos I know the swift is good and all, but Maruti has been a family name with us for quite a few years. Wanna break tradition...besides everyone has one :P. If I seriously cannot get a good notch, then will go for this.

Verna was another I looked at. Seems good, but not really a drivers car...pity :P Diesels another matter entirely but too costly for me right now...

^^ faheem I'm in belapur, office in Nerul. So will use this to commute. Will also be making trips say once a month to andheri and thane...Oh and on the expressway too.

^^C'zar I know I can get a premium hatch, like I said love the longer look of a notch more than needing the space...

DCeite - Thanks a lot concise...

Still watching this space...

even i think ..with tihs kinda budget ,
u should go for a top version of the SWIFT cauz it really looks awesome and if some more cash is remaining.get a good audio system...

and one more thing , dnt mind me askin u this..where in nerul is u r office..cauz i too live ..in nerul..maybe ive seen u he he he,..
and i really try finding TE members in navi mumbai ...

then i'd say wait till you can plonk a little more moolah...

you can't upgrade a car every 3-6months and you have to use it everyday...

a budget sedan will put-you off within a year of use...all the sedan options within 5-6L posted above have anemic engines and spartan interiors....

in contrast, premium hatchbacks like the swift zxi will come with interiors you wouldn't mind getting into after a year, will not leave you high & dry while negotiating an overtaking manoeuvre on the highway, and will come with ABS & airbags, the importance of which is way more than the long looks of a sedan

completely agree ...cauz i higher version of a small hatchback ..looks better than a low budget sedan..i xperience it myself...when i see the Swift Zxi next to a indigo , ikon and other <6lac sedans....in my buildings parking lot.i feel the swift looks better than the other cars..expect for the Honda city and a Civic parked opposite to them..

Makes sense when put like that. I guess plans are on hold till I get more cash. You're right about the safety thing. Family would kill me if they saw me in a car without airbags (if the drive back home didn't already do so...):P

Good advice man repping you...

I've been driving an ikon for more than a couple of years, mostly in the city ... its a very good car and so far I've no regrets ... though a couple of things I'd like to point out, the tyre noise on bad roads intrudes the cabin which can be irritating ... also I got the hot air blowing through the ac vents problem... the one thing I love about it is the superb handling and the back seat is comfortable too.

If you are looking for a drivers car then swift is the only other option ... also makes sense if you are gonna use it just within city limits, and has a good engine for the highways too... If you could wait then the logan looks like a good choice too. If you are looking for a family car then get the indigo or extend and get the fiesta will give you a bit of everything ... also if you are gonna be in the city .. then the ford service is not that bad though maybe a bit more expensive than maruti :)
