Thinking about a NAS rig for downloading/ filestorage. Mobo will be a D201GLY2 or an undervolted mainstream board with RAID. First thought of opening up a regular PSU and beefing up the heatsinks, but its too cramped there , and putting the power transitors on a bigger heatsink elsewhere might lead to EMI/High frequency stability problems due to the lead wires. So thinking of getting a something silent / fanless if possible. Wont need more than 300W . Any suggestions, (especially from Eazy sir :D) :) ?

^ +1. Even I need one of these. The only one I know of is the Antec Phantom Power 350W which costs a BOMB!

it gets really hot as well so its not really recommended unless your case has good airflow

i think the smartpowers and all are pretty silent right from antec ? or you could go for a psu with a larger fan that spins slower

check seventeam as well , not sure but i think they had a fanless psu

As Anish quoted, the Phantom's priced @ some 7k odd..

How abt getting a generic PSU, modding the HSs and puttin it in a bigger enclosure ?? (I believe the 400w ones being shipped with the generic cabinets're these days are put in a smaller enclosure; much smaller than say a HX620's enclosure.)

If u can get a Server PSU enclosure, u can house all of 'em.. :)

nope. thinking small, custom built enclosure. people shouldnt figure out that its a fileserver :P. that said , size isnt an issue. noise is.

sources of noise identified - mobo + cpu - none

HDD - maybe

so the psu is all thats left to shut up :P

the PSU boards themselves are cramped, and you cant connect the power transistors elesewhere

Err... How do u measure this silence (or noise).. :ashamed:

Well, wen I'd short the terminals fer testing the PSU.. it ran almost silent.. tha ADDA fan does a good job there.. Cranks up the speed wen some game or a gfx-intensive task is run..

But tats certainly an overkill for a NAS rig..

Wud be a good choice.. The VX450.. No modular cables although tats not an issue watsoever...

Shud be priced close to 3.6k.. Ideal choice..

AnandTech recently reviewed a fanless PSU. Needless to say, they did not come too impressed.

IMO, for your needs the best PSU seems to be those from Seasonic. AnandTech reviewed their 330W PSU recently and its performance was just "vow". It returned over 80% efficiency at 25 dB(A). Read the review here: AnandTech: Seasonic S12II: 330W to 500W of Silence

But then it is also a fact that Seasonic PSU's are not available in India. may be KMD or some dealer here at TE help you get them.

silent pc reviewed the 380 and found it to be similar to the 450 (which is also seasonic) , and louder

no idea about the 330. still price is a big issue :ashamed: I can source the corsair locally. So it ends there :D

^ How much for the Corsair? And dimensions? (I'm too lazy, could you just post a link)

OT : Your building a custom case? Maybe we could share the design and build something similar?

I doubt it- I'm thinking wood, brass and antique radio. Its just a figment of my imagination. Lets see how it turns out :)

I guess 4k. will have to check with the dealer once my plans are finalized. size should be similar to a regular size PSU

Try getting a VIP 300W, flatten the heatsink fins, cut the PSU top and put a 120mm fan. prefereably a silent one.

I have 2 of them VIP PSUs. a diamond mine oner you change the components inside :D very rare to find nowadays :(

can i short the two Heatsinks together :ashamed: will have to check the continuity once i get hands on it. Any recommends for a silent 120 mm fan?

the VX450 controls the speed of the fan dynamically with load. The VIP's fans - do they have some sort of control, or are they full speed the whole time ?

VIP fans are full ON all the time. Just make sure the fans run on 7V. they'll be silent enough.

Spynic lol, you'll get electrocuted if you touch the heatsinks while operation. Happened to me thrice, twice with the VIP PSU and once with a Ultra Xconnect :P

Greeny, its supposed to be a damn NAS box. No use spending 4K for a PSU. come to your senses :P Itherwise buy me a 4K PSU and i'll send over my VIP PSU

no, no, its not 'just' a nas box. Its gonna be my first custom cabby. going all out. want to make it purrfect :D It should be a thing of beauty
