Choosing between 50" Plasma or 46" LCD TV

Hi

I am looking to buy a 46" or 50" Plasma/LCD.

Now my budget is 1.7L. So that drives 50" LCD out of the equation but keeps the 50" plasma in contention.

Just when I had made my mind on 50" HDready(non-fullHD) plasma some of TE members tell me that at a viewing distance of 10-12 feet 50" will clearly be an overkill. I am worried and confused. Now I am inclined towards 46" fullHD LCD as even that retails for the same price as a 50" plasma. But then 50" is a 50"....So full and soo good :hap5:

Some people even suggest that with a viewing distance of 10-12 feet fullHD res will make viewing better on all SD and DVDs...

I am confused and so this poll. I request only people who know their stuff to vote...I have seen 50" from close and liked it but then they were impeccable videos. I need your votes either way.

PS: 11 feet is about 6 times most of us view our LCD monitors from. Just to give u an idea...

why dont u go to a showroom and find out urself because some people will like the picture quality some people wont like it.to give u an idea just lower the resolution of the monitor to 640x480(crt monitor only17inch or more)u will know how bad the picture looks.

I have a 42" LCD.... it's pretty big... a 46" or 50" would be huge.... make sure you have enough room for it :)

Plasma's while richer in color, are a lot more fragile and can easily be put out of whack by tilting the screen too much or knocking it too hard... it has something to do with the gas inside the screen. It is supposedly a pain to have the gas replaced. The LCD's are very hardy and far more durable, my screen only goes to 1080i, but I find that it is still awesome quality for the price difference, and I am very happy with it. I would also suggest checking out the inputs and outputs of your tv... this is of primary importance. More HDMI connections is better in the long run since they transport both 5.1 and HD video simultaneously and this means that you can get better sound quality without too many audio ins. I have a passthrough optical out from the tv going to my receiver, and my ps3 and HD satellite receiver both use HDMI and my DVD player attaches directly to receiver, so I do not need any other audio connectors from my peripherals... this is HUGE because otherwise I would be stuck with not enough audio inputs/outputs for 5.1.

11 feet is way too far away. The recommended distance is twice the screen diagonal. For a 50" screen, thats 8-9 feet. Closer is better. From the link anish posted -
Viewing from this distance or closer will result in a more immersive experience, and also lessen eye strain caused by watching a smaller image in a dark room.

Also, you need to sit closer while watching higher rez material. So, viewing distance for 1080 < 720 < DVD < TV.

I entered 10feet.
I got a recomended distance between 9.5 feet and 18.9 feet. Says most people are comfortable within this range...
Considering my girl will be watching cable a lot, I guess sitting a bit farther will be wise...or maybe getting 46"...
Gawd the thot of having to sit thru saans bahu thingies on 50" is scary :ashamed:

Also says
Maximum recommended SMPTE viewing distance is 6.9 feet
SMPTE seems to be becoming a de facto standard for front projection home theaters also. Viewing from this distance or closer will result in a more immersive experience, and also lessen eye strain caused by watching a smaller image in a dark room.

Yup. Those guys recommend a minimum view angle of 30deg for movies. THX is even closer, 36deg. The idea is that the screen width should fill your whole vision.

^ Exactly! I've just recently started experiencing the real 1080p capabilities of my display (Yup Zhop, I got the DVI -> HDMI :D) and I find around 10ft to be the best distance for a full immersive audio/video experience.

So according to you 10feet viewing distance is fine with 50" while watching tatasky transmission.

Your opinion matter as you already have a 50"...

Also found that strangely there is no 46" plasma available...

Also is there any 46" non fullHD LCD TV and whats the price.

^ No, I sit 10ft away while watching HD content.

TATA Sky looks fcked up anyways whether your 1ft or 15ft away, the signal is just too poor for a display of that size.

:(

My uses

1. Tatasky 80.5%

2. DVD 19.5%

3. Games 0.0%

4. HD 0.5%

So, now what...

You want a 50" screen for watching cable? :S Wow you're rich! :P

abey, I am not going to watch DVDs daily but the cable programmes may be kept on even if I dont watch it with interest...I am a major sports fan and I watch Cricket, tennis, hockey and major sports events with great interest...Next comes HBO and AXN with a sprinkiling of DVDs.. and you know, theres going to be a lovely girl who will be coming to live with me forever n ever :) and so cable becomes important....

Ok, whats your opinion now...

46" or 50" :P

Ok Update:
Rearranged my bed. Viewing distance now is 12.5 feet :P
Will be soon going to nearby TMC center to demo few displays...

^ LOL, why are we having this debate. Its just 4 inches more man, what's the price difference like.

10/20k? Go for the 50! Plasmas produce wayy better colour and blacks too, and trust me, once you start watching HD on that display, it'll become more like

DVD 0.5%

HD 19.5%

A good 46" LCD and 50" plasma cost almost same...but...Iam worried abt 50" magnifying bad cable pictures...

Went and saw some Samsung non-HD LCD panels....S series....Totally bland colors...didnt like it one bit...the smaller 32" ones looked very good indeed...42" was decent but 46" was bad...Not talking of grains or anythin here but the colors were much inferior on the larger panels...

Tom Il be gng to some of the major outlets and check lots of plasmas/LCD...

I called up and enquired and unfortunately noone stacks 50" plasmas....they all have 50" and 46" LCDs though for demo...

^ I doubt it. When I was going to buy, the 50" Plasmas were between 1.6-2.2L

And the only decent 46" LCD at that time was the FullHD Sony X series which was 2.4L.

Trust me, its like PC monitors, the cheaper 46" panels will be very sucky (almost like TN's wrt PC's), and the reason plasmas look a zillion times better but are cheap is cause most of them "geeks" think a plasma has 10k hours of life ;)

Also checkout The Sound Room, that guy will have much more knowledge and guide you a LOT better than most of the looser company showrooms.

All the best, do keep us posted :D

Get the LCD... the plasma's are way too fragile... the LCD is far more durable. The Plasma is a pain to get fixed if you have to have the gas replaced... just tipping it too much while moving into place can mess it up, it has to stay completely upright at all times.
