Choosing between 50" Plasma or 46" LCD TV

^ Not necessarily. LCD's are still in catch-up mode with respect to colour reproduction and black levels as far as plasmas are concerned, but the latest panels (like the link you posted) have reduced the difference to negligible. Hopefully the next gen will surpass plasmas in terms of picture quality.

As for price, you decide whether a 46" panel for 1.8L versus a 50" panel (with marginally better IQ) for 1.8L ;)

Get the LCD... the plasma's are way too fragile... the LCD is far more durable. The Plasma is a pain to get fixed if you have to have the gas replaced... just tipping it too much while moving into place can mess it up, it has to stay completely upright at all times.

Again a misconception. The newer gen plasma (though still more fragile than LCD's!) are far more durable than the earlier Gen 1&2 sets.

Besides, how often will you be removing them from the wall-mount (where it infact is fitted completely upright ;))

Vij, are you going to shift to mainly HD content soon? Otherwise, I feel you should get a SD screen. Should be a whole lot cheaper.

^ Why make him regret his decision after say 5 years when HD/Blu-Ray players/discs hit the mainstream?

A flat-panel TV is something you'll use for atleast another 10 years, and he'll solely miss out on HD support, even if say TATA Sky launches Sky HD in India.

Buying a SD screen now is utter foolishness to say the least.

Depends on the cost, which I'm not aware of. IF it is super cheap, he can recover the cost in the couple of years, and then go for a HD panel.

wouldn't a 10bit Sony KLV-46X250A 46" LCD for 1.5-2.0L be better than a 50" Plasma?

well the sony KLV-46W300A is much better than the KLV-46x250A,much better blacks and more contrast compared to the old X200/x250 series.like i said before my friend was in a similar situation i.e bigger plasma vs smaller lcd but after two months of research and he went for the sony W series.the best lcd we have seen so far.

I agree about the HD... more and more is being produced in HD, and you can still watch non-HD content on your HD tv...... definitely get HD

Probably. I wouldn't disagree with you one bit cause I haven't seen the W300.

I was in the situation 5 months ago, and the then 46" flagship LCD was nowhere close to the display I picked.

LCD have progressed hugely in the past few months and I'm pretty convinced the next gen will surpass plasmas in picture quality and I can finally stop recommending plasmas :)

My 42" LG LCD has awesome picture quality... HD tv and movies are incredible... and the ps3 looks great. I think LCD's have come a long way, and if you are looking at HD content... it's not going to be a huge difference... I mean how much more crisp would you really need it then that :D

^ It was the 46X200A IIRC selling at 2.4L

Its not about sharpness or crispness mate, its about the colour reproduction.

Any display with a decent resolution close to 1280x720 will produce incredibly sharp pictures with 720p content, its just that the older LCD's couldn't come close to displaying half the colours that were in the picture.

I checked two plasmas: Samsung 50Q91H and Panasonic VIERA TH-50PV70H

Even a cow can see that the panasonic had better colors :P

But there is no plasma in the 46" category. Not one...

^ 46" Panels are very rare and hardly manufactured. So its either 42" or 50".

That Viera is a stunning set btw, what's the quote like?

Panasonic VIERA TH-50PV70H MRP was 1.69L and he came down to 1.52L

Samsung 50Q91H MRP was 1.6L and he came down to 1.43L

Will be buying tom....decided on the Panasonic Viera TH-42PV70H....its not as much abt money really...just tat my bedroom doesnt luk like it needs a 50"...maybe for the living room...yes.

MRP 94,490...I am getting it for 85k...I kn the panasonic seems overpriced but I have not seen better colors in any other model...yes I like plasma colors...LCD colors have sheen...plasma colors are rich...I prefer the latter.

VIERA TH-50PV70H | Plasma TV | Digital AV | Panasonic India

I have some telling figures:

50" plasmas consume 520W under operation

42" plasmas consume 340W under operation.

42" LCDs consume 215W under operation.

good u decided to finally buy something..u definitely went through a lot of stuff i guess...finally decided on a plasma..hmm interesting choice i must say considering the trend nowadays...but i guess uve done enough research to make a proper decision...congrats man and do post a review of that TV in the review section and a few photos in the showoff section...

TH-42PV70H is 1024x768. Did you try a PC input? Through a laptop or something?

No. I have not tried that.

Also what does this mean

1080p Digital Processing Chip-Set/1080p Digital Re-mastering Processor

Inputting and outputting 1080p video signals without altering their natural specifications.

The 1080p signal format used by Blu-ray Discs offers the highest image quality among high-definition video sources. The VIERA processor receives 1080p video signals in their original format. It applies optimum signal processing without down-converting to output the same high signal quality.

Up-converts SD video signals to 1080p signals. Delivers pictures as beautiful as those from HD video signals.

The processor converts signals of present TV broadcasts and DVD software to 1080p high-definition video signals. It up-converts the video signals without causing any loss in the signal or image details. It also applies progressive conversion to upgrade 1080i high-definition video signals to 1080p signals. This allows VIERA to render pictures that are more beautiful than the original.

Any last minute suggestions are appreciated :)
