Should I or Shouldn't I?

If I go with the deal, I might remove vista home basic / might upgrade to 1GB RAM.

firstly.. i would not always advice u to remove the original os from a notebook.. in fact i feel its better sometimes to keep vista cause chances are u might not find the drivers for components on xp.. and also hp media play (or wateva they call it.. basically the software used to plays discs wit out bootin) may not work once uv uninstalled ur original os (im sufferin this prob wit my dell notebook..)

Secondly the notebook sounds alright but i think its damn heavy an a miserly ram make it necessary for u to upgrade the ram..

And also have a look at acer notebooks in this range.. they dont look as cool but might be worth checkin out their specs.. an also consider the older dell inspiron 1505 (i think tats ta model no..) im using one an its got an amazing build quality..!

I just bought a Compaq V6608AU for 35500 in Delhi...

Here are the specs

Compaq Presario V6608 AU
AMD Turion™64 X2 Processor TL-58 (1.9 GHz) / 1 MB L2 Cache / 1GB DDR2 (667 MHz) / 160GB SATA HDD / 8X SuperMulti Double Layer (8.5GB) DVD Writer / 15.4" Widescreen WXGA TFT Display with BrightView Screen Technology / NVIDIA® GeForce® Go 7150m / Up to 287 MB TAG memory (as allocated by Vista) / Altec Lansing Stereo Speakers / 5-in-1 Digital Media Reader / 56K Modem /Integrated Wireless LAN 802.11 b/g / LiIon Battery / TouchPad / S-Video TV Out / 3 USB 2.0 / Vista Home Basic / Carry Case ( 1 Year Limited Warranty)
Has 1 GB and a faster and also newer proccy... Its a Turion and not an Athlon ;)... Increase your budget and go in for this... Also don't remove the installed OS... I thought of doing it but then realized whats the point... It clutter free and works like a charm :)... Use it for a while and then decide about removing it :)

Thanks for the inputs, Will Keep the preinstalled OS!

amityrock, Will upgrade to 1GB RAM (I read in the TE Laptop Guide, upgrading myself might save a few hundreds..)

I am impressed by this one (by medpal)

Acer 4710z

Intel Dual Core T2080 @ 1.73 GHz (1 MB L2 533 FSB)

1 GB DDR-II 667 MHz

160 GB SATA

Intel GMA 950 (Mobile 943 Chipset)

14.1? Wide Screen 1280×800

DVD RW

1.3 MP Web Cam

Inbuilt Mic and 2 stereo Spks

Wireless LAN / 5 in 1 Card Reader / LAN / Bluetooth / IEEE 1934 / USB 2.0 / Supporting EXT Skps / 56.6k Modem

Price: 33K

besides looks dont matter for me.

Dell Inspiron E1505 was configured as follows:

* Intel Core Duo Processor T2500 at 2.0 GHz per core.

* 15.4" Ultrasharp SXGA+ display with TrueLife

* 512MB DDR2 533MHz RAM in dual channel mode

* Integrated Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950

* 100GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive

* 8X DVD +/- dual layer recorder

* 53 watt-hour 6-cell battery

Subject to customization??

Will be using it mostly for reading, probably will be placing the notebook at 2 or 3(max) different places in a day so 3kg shouldnt be a problem!

Switch, Compaq V6608AU is tempting, but as an age old saying goes, "spread your legs only asmuch as your blanket allows you to!;)"

Do i really need Turion 1.9 Ghz?, will upgrade to 1GB or more RAM, a better video graphics card? rest is same in V6604AU!

but will go for V6608AU if i could get for arround 34K

thats "stretch" not "spread" :p

Haha..Good one :)
btw,in most (if not all) of the laptops,graphic card cannot be upgraded!

raj, i stand corrected!(blush)

pat, i meant V6608AU has a better processor and a better graphics card! but do i need a better graphic card for web surfing/ office apps.

Is 32K ok?

eh, u dont need GFX card for surfing bro,
the on-board would do ok
there is an intel onboard thats about 96mb one
its name is, Intel[R] 82865G Graphics Controller
u need a good gfx card only if u wanna play games that require it otherwise its not needed

like the eyecandy (minus aero interface:() and certain improved functionality but i feel the response is a bit slow, like a horse running underwater, probably i need a faster system. Would like to have either ubuntu / PClinux too, going through the tutorials.

Did the system come pre-installed with windows updates ? Like the one for performance and stability improvement ?

Stay away from Turions. Turion = POS. Drains battery, slow, heats up too much.

Is this a first hand experience as my sister who owns a centrio duo with 1.6Ghz Make lenovo is just about as bad as mine Turion 1.9GHz :p

Hello Switch
Howz the v6608AU doing? Great specs and plan to procure it too - good VFM. Had a look at the system at the show room (Delhi). The build seemed a bit 'not tough' - with its glossy keypad finish. Howz the feel? You have it for about a week now - so please let me know your experience. I am torn between going in for a Dell Vostro 1500 (43K - Extra 8K :S than the 35K you paid - all for C2Duo 5270@1.4GHz/2GB RAM/NVIDIA GeForce 8400 dedicated 128MB/built-in web cam! - and no Vista!!) and the 6608AU.

I plan to use Linux in the notebook I am procuring!

Please please :( post your experience with the 6608AU.
Thanks

Its doing great... The laptop no doubt has glossy finish which is quiet difficult to maintain if you want a scratch less lappy... But performance wise its fine... I am on original installed OS as of now and haven't tried doing a lot on it except for tally and a lot of browsing(which i am doing as of now) but it is working great till now... Didn't find vista to be a problem for the lappy :)

Hi Switch ,
Im thinking of going for the Compaq V6608AU. Its great value , and has everything i need. Looks gr8 also. But Except for one thing. Graphics card is low end i.e. onboard.

Could u pls tell me what gaming titles uve tried running on it and which ones work ? Have u tried NFS Underground/Carbon on it? or GTA? Please give me an idea of the same..

Another gr8 buy wud be Dell Inspiron 1420/ Vostro 1400 with the Dedicated Nvidia GeForce 8400M GS card. It costs 45,000/- but its still costly for me...

So pls give me an idea about the games i wud b able to play on this, so tht i wont feel bad about it afterwards.

Thx!

I am going to buy v6604au. Also I want to dual boot with linux. What is your suggession, which distro is more suitable. What about the broadcom wireless driver problem. Is there any HOWTO/Tutotial/Link, please share it here.
