I got my computer for about 2 months now and everything was running good until 3 days ago.. When I cam in from work I couldn't turn my computer on.... after unpluging it from the power and pluging it back in it started but turned off after about 5 seconds.... I repeated that again and it worked fine for the next 4-5 hours that I was on. Now yesterday after work the same thing happend but it turned off after about an hour and I turned it back on and it turned of again. Today I turned it back on it worked for about 20 minutes, turned off, I turned it back on and worked for about 5 minutes and turned back of now it doesnt want to turn back on at all. The light on the motherboard is on it just doesnt seem to want to start. Anone knows what might be the problem??? my Power supplie is 450 W
PS. After the computer turned off each time I had to unplug it fro the power and plug it back in for it to turn on

The problem is due to improper heat sink, or CPU fan not working.

If it works for more time the first time and then subsequently it works for lesser and lesser time then probable ur CPU is heating. Just check the CPU heatsink and FAN. And if needed apply some heatsink lotion.

Also if CPU is fine then run memtest to check RAM.

I Think Its The Psu Rather The HSF,Or His Pc Wouldnt Run For 5 Hours Straight,Psu Is The Prob Get it Checked

yeah I thought it has anything to do with the CPU especially that I chcecked it and cleaned it and it still doesn't work..... (Now the computer doesnt turn on at all, I just see it blink for a second and turn back off) What might be the prblem with the Power Supply??/ You guys think that a bigger supply would solve the problem?? And if yes what do you recommed?

first check if the PSU is the problem...then think of getting a better one...first let us know which brand PSU u are using....
If possible..swap the PSU when this happens & see if the computer starts....if yes, PSU may be overheating..

back to basics....... check the ram, is it firmly in? then check the mobo battery, you might want to keep it out of the mobo for a while to reset the BIOS,or u might find the CMOS reset jumper for the same(from the manual).
after that , check for any loose connections and after you are satisfied, try turning it on again. check your video card etc too. If it still doesn't work, and u have a warranty, you might want to avail it, or else IMO, the mobo has gotta be the root, In case the PSU is fine (For this, check with another PSU)

GOOD LUCK !

this happens to me some times..when this happens i usually do the following

1. reset the bios using the CMOS jumper
2. make sure all components are fixed firmly else fix them properly again
3. unplug all molex connectors and reconnect them

these steps work for me usually ...

Its surely a problem with the PSU as this happened to me too till I replaced my PSU. It seems that this happens when the PSU is unable to take the load.

@western: whats your machines specs. Which brand is the PSU?

The PSU is OKIA-450ATX

The comp specs are

Intel Pentium 4 3.2
Sata 80 Gig WD HD
EVGA 7900 GT OC Graphics ( hooked up to to power pins)
5.1 Creative Audio Card ( Just added about a week ago)
A normal CD Room

And IDK what mobo its running on

"1. reset the bios using the CMOS jumper"

hmm and how exactlly do I do that??
PS. Just to let you guys know the comp isnt running right now at all since this morning I'm tping all day on my laptop

near your cmos battery, there will be three pins with a jumper. you will have to change the position of the jumper from 1-2 pins to 2-3 pins. remove the battery for abt 10 sec. then put it on, change the jumper again to 1-2 and then switch on.

there will be a jumper next to the CMOS battery...look for it in ur manual...or better, remoove the battery and wait for an hour..that will clear the CMOS memory.

maybe the PSU is overheating. But since it has dual 12V rails 18A and 15A that means it is pretty good for ur setup.

U mentioned the problem has started 3 days ago and u put that sound card one week ago, maybe that has something to do with all this ?? Just guessing...

allright guys first I tok out all my add ons.... Graphic Card, video card, HD and even processor just to c if the fans and neons will run, I got nothing ( besides the neons turning on for a second) I swapt The PSU to one from my old computer ( A compaq PSU for 240w) and when I tried to turn on my Comp only with the fans it works..... So what are your suggestions and conclsions after this...... Is the PSU the problem and if yes what do u reccomend.......

so it worked with the fans..how abt with the other addons...cards,HDDs'...what happened...i think PSU is the culprit here...however i think it is hard to use a 240W with the GPU u got....
i think it would be wise to get another good branded PSU..
if budget is not a problem go for the required PSU ... below is a link for some godo models available (the prices may be lower if u purchase locally..:P )

Well I didnt try the other addons cuz I doubt 240 W will be enough to pull this off, and after getting the fans to work and neons I do think that the PSU is the problem as well.

The budget.... hmm well I wouldn't want to go well beyond $100..... Also how many Watts should I be going for, and is Antec a good brand??

first of all u are using a 7900 GT...and good card means u need a good power supply.. i haven heard of OKIA :S thats nokia without an N :P ..anyways the powersupply is the obvious culprit and when u added the sound card it couldnt take the load ...anyway dont let the neons go on and off ...i did that with some LANCER :S psu and ended up screwing the LEDs on my antec iluminate...so be careful with lighting equipment they are sensitive
