Laptops Considering a notebook for the first time, advise...

Vandy, Instead of getting more & more confused, why don't you go take a look at the machines by yourself

None of these machines will leave you shortchanged for performance (though am not sure if the GPU issues on the XPS are sorted out as yet or not)
, so the equation boils down to which one suits you better in terms of ergonomics, other features (beyond specs) and the unquantifiable feel good factor

Good thing is Dell is available in stores now, so is Apple (and Sony always has been) so just go to a store where they have em all on display, play arnd with each and take your pick

Exactly what I intend to do. I have called for a Macbook to review at our test centre :P
The XPS M1330 I already tested, while Sony is due to send me the Vaio as well but this was a month ago, and I'm still getting empty promises. muhahahaa...

GPU issues are not exclusive to the XPS lineup. they have affected all machines utilizing those nvidia chips..

Now thats a good job perk to have :D

While your testing the Macbook, approach OSX with an open mind. Try things the OSX way and you'll be amazed at how it can speed up your daily chores :)

That was a nice tip, reviewers should be unbiased, although some times I need to remind myself that...

BTW can OS X be installed on a Vaio or XPS, or any other notebook for that matter?

^ Yup, its called OSX86. Google "Kalyway Leopard" :)

Well, its true that it can be installed somehow by using various hacked builds but the result would be far from what you can experience on a Real Mac.

And still if you're lucky enough to get everything working, it would still suck compared to actual Macs in terms of reliablity, stability and user experience.

And there's no point buying a 75k notebook and trying Hackintosh builds on it.:P

Again i'll say, kill the confusion and get a Mac. I bet it won't disappoint you at all. You'd be glad that you didn't buy those Vaio's ...etc.

Look the thing is that most for the Vaio will be those who have not used/did not like to use OS X and the Mac lovers will advocate Macbooks. No offense but its something like a post I made on head-fi regarding whether to choose an HD650 or a K701. Within an hour I had some 40 replies and 3 PMs. Within 3 days, it had grown to 140 posts, with at least 10 flame posts.

Now I'm looking to spend some time with each notebook myself and judge. We have a macbook in office, but the owner installed Win Vista on it, so I cannot judge the Mac OS X for myself.

Ha, it just struck me that my last three lappies were a white macbook, XPS 1210 and a Vaio C  so at least not all opinions are without a basis

But they still remain exactly that, Opinions

also, each of the current choices are newere and improved versions, and I wonder which one made the biggest leap over the last gen

Try out by yourself and be the Judge

And let us know whzt you ended up picking up

I will definitely do that. In fact the only reason why I'm agonising over the decision is its my first lappy, and I don't want to spend 75K on something I do not like. For me the Vaio's keypad was much better than the M1330s, and I like the segregated key structure that Sony uses. I tested an 11.1 inch Vaio and was impressed, but that model was priced At 1,15,000 and I could get them down to only 1,05,000. My budget is rock solid 75K, so that was out. I also intend to keep this for at least 2-3 years before considering another, so I'll have to live with my choice good or bad. I'm using my media leverage to try to get the other two (Vaio and Macbook) into our test labs together...
It may be awhile when I buy one, but expect a lot of photos and a detailed review of the same when I do.

hmm, the XPS 1210 is the only laptop I have used so far that I kept for ~2 years

The Vaio did not last a month

I was hoping the MB would last me as long if not more than the XPS, but then apple came with the new Al line and I had to give in to temptation

Here's hoiping muy new Al beats the record set by the XPS

^^ there will be newer models coming always... u can't be with one all ur life... :P (this holds true for the wives though )

umm, 1.5 months is too short to switch machines though

having said that, I probably have the curse of the God of Gadgets on me..

Superczar: When you say your Vaio didn't last a month what precisely do you mean? Do Vaio's have a bad track record in terms of reliability? Please comment.

Updates:
Sony doesn't have that 13.3 with them ATM. They're sending a new replacement model called VAIO SR26G, which I take is also a 13.3". A quick check told me there is no mention of this model no anywhere on the web, but the Sony contact claims this is the one. Waiting anxiously for it to arrive.

The M1330 I've already tested, and aside from the keypad, I liked it, although the detachable panels feel tacky once they get loose. Sony's segragated keyboards just rock.

Both macs should be here by next week. Not allowed to post pics, but I will give a brief impression.

Dell Studio FTW! With HD3450 GPU IF a smaller screen version is avl i dont know if it is. Dell XPS 1210 and 1330 big NONO has known heating problems!

OP yaar 75K for a laappy to last 2-3 yars isint too much budget. Get Dell lattitude if u want superb reliability i fu wanna blow 75k.

LOL, dude, by lasting, I was alluding to my love affair with the machine before I gvet something else

I got the Vaio C for my fiancee, both of us hated it, so sold it off on TE and got her a LG C1 instead (10.6", nvidia 7300, tablet), (She still has it and absolutely adores it even 1.5 yrs down the line)

As for the XPS, I loved it from the day i got it and kept it for a year when i got tempted by the 1330 (IIRC, had some issues selling it back then) so retained it till i replaced it with the MB

I loved the MB so much I couldnt resist the temptation of the new MB when it came out, so sold it to get the new MB

PS: see if this helps, 17 pages and still going strong

The new Apple Macbook vs. Sony Vaio Z thread - Notebook Forums and Laptop Discussion

do note that this is a comparsion betwen the vaio Z and MB (not the Vaio SR, which is significantly more downmarket than the z in terms of the screen, build & weight )

Look I don't mean the performance. I'll be using Vista and MS Office and thats it. If I want performance, I spend 2L on a desktop every 18 months or so. I want a small screen size, and something that's lightweight, or didn't you read my OP?
