ok, so my power is -6 in the right and -5.75 in the left. cylinder is -1.5 and axis 180 for both. so according to the chart, i should step both down to -5.5 spherical and -1.25 cyl?
or should i get my eyes tested specifically for CL power?

Ok..
Right eye: -6 (spherical) ; -1.5 (cylindrical) x 180deg
Left eye: -5.75 (spherical) ; -1.5 (cylindrical) x 180deg
Now if you want to get yourself spectacles, you will use the power as above.
But if you want to get a pair of contact lens, you should actually buy one with these numbers-
Right eye: -5.5 (spherical) ; -1.25 (cylindrical) x 180deg
Left eye: -5.5 (spherical) ; -1.25 (cylindrical) x 180deg
Please note: I am not an eye doctor/specialist, its just the knowledge i have gained over years wearing both specs and contact lenses that i am sharing with you. Please consult a specialist if you have any doubts about your power.

i was just thinking, with the difference in power, will it be a problem switching from glasses to lenses daily? i mean my right eye is weaker than my left but the chart specifies the same power for both.
with glasses itself, when i switch between different pairs with the exact same power, i can feel slight differences, so i hope this would be easier.

The difference in power for specs and lenses is because in specs glasses are a little away from your eye, whereas in contact lens the correction takes place right over the eye lens. Thus, a difference in power is required to to cover up for that difference. The correction happening at retina level with both specs and lenses is same with slightly different powers.
Also, just for your information, for lower powers (below 4) this difference does not matter and hence powers for both specs and lenses remains same. There is a straight forward formula for calculating contact lens power from glasses power and vice versa. You may google it if more interested.
Anyways, i feel almost everybody who wears contacts switches between them and glasses everyday so that should not be a problem.

I have been using spectacles for almost 8 years now. I am thinking of moving to contact lenses. I work in a IT company, so i do sit in front of computer screen for almost 8 hoursdaily + 2-3 hours at home. Should i go ahead for contacts? Do contacts strain a lot?
My power is:

Another question.
Many a times, I work for 12+hours (that too in front of laptop). I use spects as of now but am thinking of switching to lenses. I have both cylinder+spherical power. Is it advisable to switch to contacts, as I wont be able to switch contacts/contact-spects within 15hour timespan ?

I feel comfortability with lens is very subjective, i see my sister wearing lens easily even for 13-14 hours whereas i kinda feel like removing them after around 10-11 hours. I think going by theory, best time is 10-12 hours. Even i work in front of computer for full 9 hours and most of the times its quite ok, its just that i remove them as soon as i reach home.
So my suggestion would be to try a monthly disposable ones and decide if it suits your eyes.
@cedric since your cylinder power is less, i think you need not buy toric lens normal ones should be ok. Although do visit a specialist to confirm your power for contact lenses and if it would be ok to use normal lenses.

Been using lenses since 1995, here are my pointers:
1. There is absolutely no issue switching from CL to spectacles or vice versa. Just that their is comfort level period when one places lenses on the eye. Initially it will take a while to get used to the layer. Believe me after 1-2 cycles you will not feel them.
2. You should not wear lenses for > 8-9 hours / day. They form a layer on the eye ball an it does not get air. If you need to wear longer, take them off for 1-2 hours, and reset them.
3. Lenses in their packaging/cases or on eyes NEED to be lubricated at all times. Never place a dry lens on the eye. It can cut and cause damage.
4. Prolonged computer use. When you stare at a screen for a long time -- the involuntary blinking function of the eye ceases. This will cause the eye to dry and the lens to also dry. This will cause the eye to dry out and slight burning sensation. Either carry a small bottle of contact lens solution/eye cleaner and periodically place in your eye....or do not wear contact lenses to office. I do not.
5. Maintain strict hygiene when removing and placing. This is the biggest worry.
6. Visit a qualified practitioner before starting first time. Do not just walk to a spectacle shop and have them give you CLs. They are noobs and markeeters.

Just went through this thread. Exhausting!
Kinda scared me off trying out lenses myself online. The last time i used lenses i was very comfortable with them and didn't take much time at all to get used to them. And they were they old yearly lenses with separate lens cleaner and saline solution and protein removal tablets and stuff. All that maintenance wasn't much trouble either. But i now have doubts about the base curve and diameter. Someone said improper lenses may not appear so but could damage the eye after some time. :huh:

As i mentioned earlier, i have difficulty adjusting between my different pairs of glasses. Even at the exact same power, i can feel the difference, some pairs strain my eyes out and some are very comfortable. Will something similar occur when switching between lenses and glasses. I'm not talking about the lens comfort itself. The last time i used lenses, my power was MUCH lower, so maybe switching to glasses and bakc wasn't much of an issue then.

I never faced any such issue when i used lenses, of course they were not the same high water content ones like the current disposables, but there's no issue with the powers differing for you then ?

Which lens is better.Well thats tough to say to be frank.But j & j are cheaper than b & l hence if trying than it should be given preference i feel.
Regarding solution.Well it totally depends on oneself.I started to use solo solution than migrated to renu.Than aquasoft which fortunately was cheaper and quantity alo was almost 30% more than Renu.
Than again i tried RENU and during same time in US there was lot of hullah over renu solution and similarly i too used to get lot of burning issue in eye.Hence i stopped it altogether.Now i use only aquasoft and touch wood no problem so far.
People asking to try lens for first time from this thread.Ill say better get one from retail shops and try out there first because first time when one try lenses the eye is not use to it hence it tries to deal with as foreign dust.Plus on top of that timing with finger into eye also needs to be taken care of as one first time one is not comfortable of adjusting the pupil.
Hence get one from local retailer 1-2 month package saying i want to try it first.
Than if happy go with such deals.
Btw someone here mentioned toric lenses.Am i right that toric is for people who suffers from astigmatism right?

Yup. Toric lenses incorporate a cylindrical power. And also a 'mechanism' for keeping lens rotation aligned.

As I mentioned, once I remove the lens I face a extreme faint (very faint) blurriness. Like how you feel when you get up from a drowsy slumber. Wash your face, get fresh air (to your eyes) and you are fine.
Meaning if I remove my contacts, then place spectacles, I can immediate use the computer OR drive if I want. Just being nit-picky to tell I guess.
For first time users I would suggest:
By the 5 pair (10 lens) daily disposal pack. Though they come pre-sunk in saline, would suggest to buy a small bottle of Renu too. I like to wet my lens considerably even when pulled out of a disposal pack. And to stress again, please please wash your hands before handling lenses.
