Okay I bought the cm hyper n520 and replaced the stock intel c2d cooler. But all I see is only one degree change in the idle temps! :( I'm pretty sure its fixed the right way but i'm having doubts about the thermal compound. I put a small drop of it in the center and spread it around pretty evenly on both the proc and the heatsink base. I've attach a couple of pics as to what i've done. Please lemme know what best I can do to improve the temps

holy fu*k.. So much TIM   It is not icing that you are applying on a cake :P
TIM in essence is as interface material used for better heat transfer b/w chip and cooler base. Using too much TIM will be counterproductive.
Just put one or two drops in the center and spread it around evenly w/ a plastic card, not necessarily till the edges.
You will find plenty guides on applying TIM if you search for it..
Oh and you only have to apply it on one side, either on the chip or the cooler base. Applying it on the chip is recommended.

A rice-grain worth TIM is all that's required and let your heatsink base spread it evenly. Jesus that's certainly too much. :P

Oh boy I had initially messed up that as well! :P Had fixed it the other way around.. it was sucking in air from the exhaust fan and throwing it out on to the ram! XD Then I interchanged both the fans :P

There you go, all u have to do is put a small grain sized drop and spread it evenly with your finger covered with a thin plastic sheet. I have found using a circular movement to be the best way to cover the entire surface evenly and then work on any bumps.
