Now does a developer makes the game or does the game makes a developer? The question is surely debatable but its not which bothers me here. For me i only know that this game would have lifted 1c games at a greater height had it not been for some irritating flaws.
Some general insights
STORY
A chilling incident has taken place in arctic.Which made a nuclear ice breaker ship called North Wind stagnant. In other words it is shipwrecked. The year is 1968.what happened to the ship members or the ship?
Now 1981 you Alexander Nesterov,is a Russian meteorologist.Who goes to find out through what horrible situations these crew members went and what ultimately happened to them.More will be revealed later.
GAMEPLAY
Quite innovative.you have to find heat source obviously to keep you on your feet. Therefore heat replenishes your health here.Initially you are not given any kind of fire arms. You get fire arms after few initial chapters.
Ammo will be limited for next few chapters but still if you use the gun judiciously you wont have any problem. But later in the levels you will get plenty of ammo.
Mental echo:- The best part of the game. You will be able to access the memory of the dead ship members and rectify their mistakes. This plays a major part in the story progression.
VISUALS
Atmosfear 2.0 engine is awesome and awful at the same time.Awesome because you will be able to feel the chills of the arctic when you get immersed in the game or the ingame atmosfear.
Awful because this is the major let down or flaw in this game. The fps fluctuates now and then.More irritating it also freezes frequently. The game is not properly optimized.
What distinguishes this game
Please note that this game is not like any other conventional shooters out there. It is completely different and this is where it makes a huge impact.
Story handling:-The story has been presented transcendentally! Never in any other game i have experienced this. The story is presented in bits through other characters memory, through the wrecked ship's captain's notes and through another story with a different protagonist which co-relates to the ongoing one.
It does not follow a linear path like other games. Here the story makes several jumps.Dont worry there is more to it which cannot be explained here as it will act as a spoiler.
If you have seen the movie memento then imagine something like that here.
Please note that i repeat the story is quite mature and taxes your mind.If you are not paying attention from the start itself to the game then you are bound to remain befuddled at the end.
Gameplay mechanicsThis game is a perfect example of how to concoction gameplay with the story. Both are interdependent which gives an amazing experience.Like there is a level at the nuclear reactor chamber in the ship in flashback where you have nothing to do but follow some orders. Here you get some answers for this present condition and also enjoy doing the tasks because they are quite interesting.
It will give you a perfect cinematic experience.
Best if played in any chilling winter season.
Atlast i would only say that for this game i cannot agree with IGN and i will side with gamespot.
For stalkers fans if they ask if we will miss anything if we skip this game then i would say.Yes you will miss a colossal experience.Or a classic title.
