Difference between Xbox 360 & PS2 not obvious to Indian reviewer

A bleak console review has trickled out of India, where Xbox 360 made its debut just over a month ago. "[After] spending hours with [Xbox 360], the big difference between this machine and those in the market today, particularly, Sony's PlayStation 2, were not obvious," writes Raghuveer Malik of Rediff.

In India, HD displays have yet to penetrate the consumer market and Xbox Live is still a pipe dream. Remove what must be considered Xbox 360's two strongest selling points (HD gaming and Xbox Live) and really, what is the difference between Microsoft's console and PS2?

Now consider the unattractive price tag, relatively few software options, and lack of "support" from the pirating community; it's obvious why "[hardly] anyone was trying out the lonely, shop-soiled demo piece." India's games market is predicted to explode in the coming years, but Microsoft appears unable to gain any ground over the well-established PlayStation brand.

I guess then there's no reason for anyone to get a PS3 either. Let's all continue living in this gen till HDTV's are present in every Indians home which will never happen.

Lol is he nuts or what, there is a huge diff in graphics even on a normal 29" TV between a ps2 and an xbox 360.

Otherswise yeah u do require an hdtv to get all the visuals brilliant, 640*480 is only good till a point.

From an Indian consumer point of view, the average Indian, not folks like us, when considering value for money and a reason to upgrade (besides the new titles and hardware), he has a point.

HDTV isn't a standard here, neither is Xbox Live. Considering the easy availability of pirated games for both the Xbox and PS2, why would the average Indian upgrade to the new platform?

LOL where does that poor reviewer suppose to see good graphics??

I mean just 3 days back i went to planetM and game store in Inorbit and there were hardly 3-4 games with stupid tennis being one of them.

Totally agree with you on that... ive seen it work on the normal tv and a hd tv... but the graphics are so obviously different from ps2. And what kind of a retarded reviewer is he that he goes and reviews a 360 on a blimmin normal 29" tv... sad excuse for a review i must say.

what kind of tv does an average indian have?

And in case he doesn't have an HDTV then what console should he spend money on?

read the paragraphs posted in the first post. Which part of this doesn't make sense apart from your statement that the reviewer is a retard????

The point here is the difference is still noticeable on regular TVs. Also he hasn't stated the exact reason why Xbox Live wouldn't work, this shouldn't be the case after M$ has it officially launched here.

So, one of the comments on joystiq...

I'm not knocking India, but the country has a GDP of $3,400 per capita, while the US has a GDP of $41,500, Germany is $30,100, Japan is $31,600, the UK is $30,100, Australia is $31,600, and most countries in South America are in the $11,000 range. Even China only has a GDP per capita of $6,400, while South Korea is $22,600 (and North Korea is $1,700). Net result - India as a nation is a poor country. Take that into consideration in your article as well - if your average income is under $1,000, then only the 10% of the population that controls 25% of the money can afford one.

...well its the truth (right?).
