hey guys i am from kolkata i have a budget of 8K to buy a digital camera. so which brand and model to go for can you mention

Canon 590IS in grey market (without bill and warranty). Best bang for the buck.

With bill and warranty it will be about 9k.

Canon S570IS with bill n warranty will also fit in that range. not much diff betn the 570/590 anyways.

i'm getting a canon powershot 590is for abt 7k on ebay with 1yr dealers warranty.the seller said that he has imported them from singapore.he has good feedback .
so should i buy it from him.how reliable r the canon cameras.(do they develop any faults with normal use).also is it costly to hav them repaird?
thanks

It is costly actually. service charges are 1k :P

But ppl do buy from grey al the time. so shud b ok.

Some kodak models are good (US), all models available in India are crap. Can say as am using one and now I wish that I could have bought a superzoom in money which I spent on crappy kodak.

but do they get defects regularly(with careful usage),or r they quite reliable?

Dunno what all cannons are availabe in the market. This really isnt an arms and portable bazooka forum :bleh:

If u want to take a picture of the cannon with a canon camera, the ultrazooms in the canon stable are the S3, S5, SX100, SX110 and the S10.

Try the S3 (older gen), sx100, sx110 in ur budget.

Quality comes to mind? Like I said, stay away from kodak :P Look, just find yourself a model number (even a kodak) then just go and search any half decent camera review site for the review. e.g. steves digicams and digital photography review are two of the ones I refer to for reviews. I prefer Steve as his reviews are more geared for the point and shoot crowd.

Ok forget megapixels. Go for a lower megapixel camera instead. Avoid the 10 MP and higher cameras like plague !

Instead features that you have to have are - OIS (Optical Image stabilization), a large LCD screen (larger the better). Minimum shutter lag (Shoot a couple of snaps and see if you are satisfied with the speed. i.e the time it takes for you to press the shutter button and the picture is displayed on the screen.) My Nikon camera (L11) has horrible shutter lag and the result is that I hardly use it.

The latest Kodak cameras (M893IS) is quite decent. It has IS, and is decently fast when shooting. But it lacks manual controls (the ability to control the shutter speeds and aperture). But it is otherwise a sleeker camera than the Canons and it uses a Li-ion battery which means the flash recycles faster.

so which one should i will go for??

Go for the Canon 590/570 IS if you want to learn photography and don't mind a slightly bulky camera. Or go for the Kodak M893 IS if you want a decently slim camera with IS.

If you want a superzoom for 13k, then go for a Kodak Z1012 for 13.5k at Croma. It is one of the recommended superzooms at Steves cameras.

Else if you want to spend a little more, you can get a Canon S5/S3 for about 15k for slightly better picture quality (marginal).
