We have a 16 year old Sony surround system that my dad bought all those years ago with embedded woofers in the speakers. Surprisingly, these speakers sound as good as any modern speaker system (and probably high-end computer speakers as well). There is great detail in the music. You can feel the thumps really well and the sound quality is great.
The betterness is merely an assumption. I've never actually personally had the pleasure of hearing from a high-end computer speakers, other than Altec Lansing MX5021, which my brother uses. And this old audio system certainly sounds marginally better than that, at least for music.

It seems the only advancement speakers have undergone is the reduction in size.
