Do speakers outdate less quickly?

We have a 16 year old Sony surround system that my dad bought all those years ago with embedded woofers in the speakers. Surprisingly, these speakers sound as good as any modern speaker system (and probably high-end computer speakers as well). There is great detail in the music. You can feel the thumps really well and the sound quality is great.

The betterness is merely an assumption. I've never actually personally had the pleasure of hearing from a high-end computer speakers, other than Altec Lansing MX5021, which my brother uses. And this old audio system certainly sounds marginally better than that, at least for music.

It seems the only advancement speakers have undergone is the reduction in size.

Afaik old models perform better than the newer speakers...dunno about the high end ones..but this is true for under 10k ones

kvikram, I used to listen to this system a lot at a relatives place in the late 90's. Lovely sound.

Speakers and amps dont get outdated so much. Ofcourse tech does improve. But there are lots of vintage speakers and amps which can give the latest hi end audio gear a good run for their money. On the contrary, media players get outdated. Decoders get outdated.

it is the electronics in the AVR primarily that get outdated - for example HDMI instead of composite. Good set of speakers should last long time.

Not at all. CPUs get outdated quickly. RAMs/consoles/cell phones get outdated quickly. A well preserved set of speakers (or vinyls, turn table) lasts for decades.

the amp and the speaker should last for eternity (as long as the speaker surrounds and the cones dont get damaged)
