well this time of year i am little bit more busy so could not visit the site yesterday.
rabies the disease is itself scary but not as much all have described here.
i would like to throw some more light on it (already some facts have been said by wraith and hummer).
rabies is a disease transmitted by virus and can happen by animal bite (any animal for sake).
the animal has to be actively sufferring from disease and should be obvious if you are able to observe the animal. the animal if surives happilly the period of 2wks from your accident you are safe.
the disease transmission grade as mentioned earlier is devided by way of extent of inujry, the area affected and size of the wound.
the diesase itself is cure less. i mean it does not have any cure at present and the it takes about 3 -14 days to present itself. some times virus may remain hidden for year to gether.
way to prevent :
anti rabies vaccine - initially it used to be painfull subcutaneous injections around your umbilicus for 5 -14 doses.
now a days it is discontinued and newer vaccines are available which are to be taken intramuscularly for 3 - 6 doses. schedule as mentioned by hummer is 0,3,7,14,30 and optional 90th day dosage.
now a days the cost has reduced remarkably but still as per our economy it is costlier (about 250-300 per dose may vary according to state,. in gujarat the government provides at 100 rs. per dose in government hospitals and clinics)
no adverse effects reported til date except some local pain at injection site which absolved by painkillers.
my advise :
take 3 doses of this vaccine if you are bitten by any animal even if it happens to be a pet for your own safety. (if you are sure the animal itself is vaccinated against rabies then you can omit the third injection)
if you keep pets in your home especially dog or cat it is advisable to keep them vaccinated against rabies and take certificate from your vaternarien.
also
you need to take tetanus toxoid injection to prevent tetanus which occurs due to bacteria in dust or debris in animal clow or teeth. this is routine and advisable even if you happen to injure yourself by other means like road accident, fall, planned surgery, pregnancy, childhood, cut while modding cabinet or your m/c if its deep and severe, some occupational injuries like cutting finger by hammer-drill-blade-knife likewise.
in short rabies is dangerous but not that much prevalent so that it occurs with every animal bite.
it takes just a few precautionary measures and common sense on your part to avaid it.
take care
ps: if some one on te happens to ask for some medical help / guidance do send me a pm or catch me on yahoo my id is medpal at yahoo dot com.
in my medical career spanning 12 years i have seen only 2 patients of rabies one was a middle aged woman from a far off village in my district bitten by rabies affected dog which died very next day (the dog) and second one from rajasthan when i was in by first year of MS.
the symptoms of rabies are hyper activeness, excessive salivation, the biggest hint is hydrophobia (pt is not able to even have a look at water will not accept water even if thirsty and if you give milk patient will drink it and many other signs which are irrelevant here.
hope i have diffused fears of many here.
