professional home theaters generally have 2 to 4 HDMI inputs, and 1 HDMI output. They will pass on the video to the TV and decode the sound themselves. I think youtube will have some videos. You can also download the manual of home theatre recievers. They generally have connection guides in the beginning of the manual
 
This is with respect to Yamah YHT 196. It has 3 HDMI inputs and 1 HDMI out. It also has Optical in. I have connected my TV for display to HDMI out of it. 3 HDMI inputs have PS3, MK808 and sometimes PC/Rpi2. This way audio is routed to speakers connected to HT and video is on TV only. I have attached reference picture of back of said model. This should give you some clarity.
