"Dr." Zakir Naik, Sanal Edamaruku

Okay. The guidelines state that there should be no racial/religious slurs (which I haven't used anywhere). Not that you can't even open your mouth on these issues. But if it's such a drain on the members here I will refrain from starting threads like this.

Dude, this is a open forum. There is only as much as one can do to reprimand members. This discussion may or may not yield anything fruitful, but I am of the opinion that we stay away from such topics and stick to Tech stuff on this forum. Just my 2 cents !!

Only tech stuff? That's a little limited for an off-topic forum don't you think ? What if I want to start a thread on birds ?
who says this is an off topic forum ???? this is a tech forum(read techenclave) !!!!
this aint OTenclave mate, general topic is fine as long as its not inflammable or offends someone !!! and for birds you can probably check this site out which is dedicated to birds, i guess its better we stick to technology !!!
i dont really support GT section in a tech oriented forum, but again thats my opinion, people from other countries look at us as a tech site when someone goes through such inflammable thread all that theyd see is mudslinging and we being a community of 50k+ members what brings us together here at this very place is technology !!!

All those people who have a problem with such discussions can easily add these threads to their website ignore list.

@OP - I haven't posted in any of your threads but the find them to be intellectually invigorating. So kudos to you and please don't stop on account of others. If you would have broken any rules I am sure Mods would have taken action by now.

I really don't understand why discussions on politics and religion are termed as flammable. In fact I think an online forum is the best way to discuss these matters as you can't actually cause physical harm to the other person just because he has different views.

As for your question as to why nothing is done against someone like Zakir is because he has followers and money. Same goes for the Church or any other religious institution.

This can only change if people are educated properly and educated people start supporting each other in instances like these cases. If the law would have laid a finger on Mr. Zakir his followers would have created a ruckus till he was released. Unfortunately educated folk like me and you don't come to the help of each other as you can see in the case of Mr.Sanal.

If this place is only meant for tech. , why do we have threads on rapes, movies, pizzas, porn, treadmills, admissions, cricket, places to visit etc. ? As for people from other countries going through this place, anyone with half a brain can separate the wheat from the chaff. Also, birds were an example. You actually gave me a site to talk about birds.

Its because before its a tech forum its a forum and so a little discussion on OT subjects from people who share an interest makes sense. But if you want to really get into areas which might end up being controversial topics its better to find a more appropriate forum... and as you have realized the mods here are fairly accommodating of most GT topics.

Thanks for your opinion @chiron. And please do not misconstrue me, I'm saying this in a pretty unbiased manner. You have accused me of several things. Being a 'troll', a 'love doctor' and what not. I have been on internet forums since I was a young lad (2003). I know what being on a forum entails. The topics I have discussed hit people's emotions precisely because these topics have been given this status of absolute respect that they do not deserve. You can talk about pizzas but you can't talk about topics on which people have different opinions. I see this as a double standard. Every human idea should be subjected to critical thinking. And I see these topics as no different. So what if this, in general, is a technology forum? Are tech. enthusiasts not people? Do they not have a life outside of tech. ? Technology forums also have off-topic/general sections where people debate their opinions/ideas that aren't related to technology (or are related to technology in some cases). I see nothing wrong in that. And this particular forum is private (ATOT doesn't do this).

Why do we have such biases on these forums? Several international forums (even if they're related to tech.) discuss topics on many issues (in their general sections). Why do we consider our ideas so sacred that they cannot be subjected to rational inquiry ? I haven't started any of these topics in the hardware section etc. I, IMHO, think a lot of us need to change our mindsets.

@OinkBoink Let me try to explain my point of view as simply as I can.

1. No one is saying you should not voice your opinion. Its a free country, no one has the right to do that.
2. You can start a thread on almost any topic of your liking, until and unless it doesn't hurt the forum.
3. There have been threads on rapes, movies, pizzas, porn, treadmills, admissions, cricket, places to visit etc. just to have a techie's view into things.
4. While some topics are OK, others just hurt the reputation of the forum, rather than anything good coming out of it.
5. No one is saying that the threads you started are wrong, that's for the mods to decide. And if its locked you can take it up with them.
6. While the mods try to keep the forums clean and shiny; sometimes they too have to be strict and lock up some threads just to keep OT threads in check. Trust me it helps sometimes.

While saying all of the above, I am not implying that you have done anything wrong out here. But some topics are best kept out of a Tech Forum and discussed maybe on related forums (if they exist) or any other related site for that matter.

I do not think it is worthy of our time to debate about such misguided people. They are beyond words and help.

Actually it is also our own failure as we are inadequately equipped to help such people who actually need our help. All we can do is "scientifically" pray for their well being.

People who say not to post anything apart from tech related stuff need to get their brains checked if they have any.

Sometimes I read the tagline of techenclave closely, gray matters here, and I ask myself, is that just to sound cool?
