Take the speed of SATA outside your computer case with this external eSATA slot plate adapter. The adapter adds an external eSATA port to any Serial ATA controller.

Re: WTB: e-SATA Bracket

are you aware that an eSATA connector is different from the regular SATA connectors ? You CANNOT plug a regular SATA cable into an eSATA socket... check out an eSATA connector in this thread - my post number 8 .....

http://www.techenclave.com/forums/vantec-esata-usb2-sata-hdd-case-78075.html

The cable in the picture you have shown in your post would be having a regular SATA connector on the inner cable to connect to the SATA headers on the motherboard but the SATA socket on the back plane would be for an eSATA connector.

Thank you for your nice guide.

please see this - Microbarn: e-SATA male to SATA300 female cable with Bracket
I want to buy this.

From what I can make out the "e-SATA male to SATA300 female cable with Bracket" in your link is exactly what I have mentioned. This will require you to have the special eSATA cable between the computer and eSATA casing. The eSATA cable DOES NOT plug directly into the SATA socket of a HDD - the connection is quite different. The reason for a different type of cable to be used for the external eSATA is that it is made with better shielding for better EMI protection.

I have the cable you have asked for - this came with my Vantec eSATA case. I have put up a picture of the cable in the TE thread I linked to.

is it this one -

YES.... and to show the difference here is a picture of a SATA connector on a HDD along with the eSATA connector... 2 differences - the eSATA connector is wider and it does not have the L shape to the connector.

Re: WTB: e-SATA Bracket

so, what should I buy to have a eSata external port (I have 2 open sata port on the motherboard) ?

Get either of the Antec or Vantec eSATA external cases. These will come with all the cables necessary from the SATA connector on MotherBoard to the SATA HDD in the external case.

The data transfer speed of a SATA II HDD should be about the same when it is connected directly to the motherboard or if it is connected as an external eSATA HDD. Only thing is look for a cool running HDD as drives in external cases can run quite hot - in this regard the Antec case has the advantage as it has a fan in the external case.

Re: WTB: e-SATA Bracket

So, there is no cheap solution to convert SATA to eSATA :(

Re: WTB: e-SATA Bracket

SATA port on u r MB is connected directly to ESATA connecter on case or PCI back plate ..but u also req power along with ESATA to SATA cable if u r going to use STD desktop HDD as ESATA one so even take that into consideration ...lol better u can use longer SATA connector and power molex that comes out of u r case for time being :P

actually, that is what I am doing now..... looking for a better solution ;)

Re: WTB: e-SATA Bracket

If you are OK with running a SATA II HDD at USB2 speeds then there are external cases available that will accept SATA HDDs and connect to a USB2 port. The difference you will see in data transfer speeds will be around 62 - 68mb/s for eSATA compared to 33 - 35 mb/s for USB2.

I have read that using a regular SATA Cable outside the case can give EMI problems and cause data corruptions. If you going to do this anyway then keep the SATA cable away from other electronic equipment.

Also our GURUJI Deejay mentioned that a SATA cable can take upto 50 connects disconnects before it can give problems - I use my SATA cables for many connects/disconnects as I keep switching HDDs and I have 4 cables now which are NOT usable.

wah!!!! Thats shocking for me :O, i keep removing the hdd now and then (me pirate :devil2:). Why don't you make thread on dos and donts ;)

YUP a mere 50 insertions is about all a SATA cable can handle... read DEEJAY's expert comments ...

The external connector and cable are designed for over five thousand insertions and removals while the internal connector is only specified to withstand fifty.

Only Fifty .... . (members to note and try not to exceed this limit for data security)

^^ is that 50 disconnects while HDD is still Powered On or when the PC is Off?

Disconnect with PC powered on = chance of a DEAD HDD :ohyeah: Hot swapping SATA II HDDs is just someones pipe dream... never works for me.

... with PC powered off..... after about 50 insertions the darn SATA cables seem to get a loose fit on HDD ... my current set are already loose.... have been doing a lot of HDD swapping recently :(

Re: WTB: e-SATA Bracket

^^^ thnx, so only the Cable connector gets lose na, or does the connector on the HDD get loose too? (that wld be scary....kinda like ur Hitachi Drive Sata connector that broke off :P)

BTW correct me if i'm wrong, but all he wants is just an eSATA port.. so in that case shouldn't the eSATA bracket be enough?

Though yes, what all you guys have mentioned is right - he cannot connect a SATA Hard disk *directly* to the eSATA port.

Edit:

@iosoft - Just to clarify :

The eSATA Bracket connects the Motherboard SATA port <--> eSATA port on bracket

From that eSATA port you will again need a converter back to SATA (this is usually present in eSATA casings) to connect your SATA hard disk.

Hope that clarifies things ;)

When the connection has got loose because of inserting a SATA cable a number of times and then I change the cable the new one fits tight - so the HDD connector seems to hold quite well. The wear seems to be only on the cables connector.
