EA Says Single-Player Gaming Is On The Way Out

Speaking with Develop, EA Games president Frank Gibeau says that the company will be focusing on "connected" gameplay experiences, and says that the era of single-player only experiences is likely coming to an end.

"Online is where the innovation, and the action, is at" said Gibeau. "I volunteer you to speak to EA’s studio heads; they’ll tell you the same thing. They’re very comfortable moving the discussion towards how we make connected gameplay – be it co-operative or multiplayer or online services – as opposed to fire-and-forget, packaged goods only, single-player, 25-hours-and you’re out. I think that model is finished."

However, that doesn't mean that EA feels online multiplayer is the only way to push connectivity in its games. "It’s not only about multiplayer, it’s about being connected." said Gibeau. I firmly believe that the way the products we have are going they, need to be connected online. Multiplayer is one form of that."

We wonder what other models of connectivity EA has in mind. What do you think? Do you still enjoy single-player gaming experiences?

i still njoy single player titles....... and i think companies have more money in multiplayer thats why they are slowly switching to multiplayer titles......

I don't think Single Player campaign will stop completely. They will go the COD way of short SP campaign and a multiplayer, which I think is OK. Recent games that are released have already started to show this trend.

Not all game genres blend well with the multiplayer category, so single player gaming will definitely continue.
 
Single player is good for campaign where there is some story line.
Multiplayer ie LAN play or online is good when you want to play with your friends/others.
 
I say fak EA, Single player is here to stay!

How the heck will we play Multi player in the middle of the night with a shtty internet?
 
The day the Single Player gaming ends, People can officially tell that gaming has ended. Mutiplayer is supposed to be an extension for game, a thing that delivers more value to the game you have purchased.

hmmmmm, i was thinking changing to airtel broadband after experiencing the high pings in BSNL broadband......... looks like even airtel sucks....... by the way where do you live in chennai.............
 
Not every one wants to "compete" and pwn noobs, some just like to play the game for its story, graphics, gameplay, music, characters and many other aspects, and when finished, move on to other games.
 
Single Player is the Base n multiplayer is like something that adds more value to the game generally...but some games are inclined towards sp and others along mp... Both are important....:)
 
Hah !! Single players can never be out of business !! ea should play gears of war and god of war !

its like saying ...movies will be out of business! I mean ..."WHOA" moments in games can be created in a single player only !
