Why do the 7900GT cards have such small HSF's which don't even cover the memory chips... they use ddr3 which even the 6800GT's used but these had the ram in mind as well...

As far as I know ddr3 doesn't heat per se but the fact is these modules are clocked faster so why no HS on the ram now when earlier it was there?? Did they just discover that ddr3 runs cool...:P

to save cost, what else??

The 7900GT is priced a lot cheaper this time around and they wanted to save as much as they can. So small heatsink on core does the job so thats what they included.

I expect to see manufacturers like evga and XFX soon comming with their own cooling solution that may be better than the referance.

In other words they finally realised that the ddr3 chips didn't exactly need active cooling unless they were mercilessly OC'ed... :ohyeah:

well they do get hot but not hot enough to cause damage to them.

when i had 6600GT the ram will get preety hot unless u place a card cooler under the card which cooled them down quiet effectively without the need of ramsinks.

Basically if you are an enthusiast they want you to purchase GTX or make your own cooling arrangements ;)

First was to save costs. Major cost cuttings on the 7 series. Secondly was to differentiate between the 7800gt and gtx. with flimsy cooling you don't expect people to take risks. So either buy a 7800gtx or get aftermarket cooling.

which brings me to a techy query....what is the difference between the ram on say a 6800GT/6600GT (not the 256 bit thingy :P )...and the 7900 series that these don't heat up as much...

For example 6800GT @ 1 GHz heats
The 7900GT @ 1320 MHz doesn't...or at least not as much...

Why??

They say that 7900GT is hidhly overclockable but I don't think that such a small card will support good heatsinks like the ones on 7800GTX extremes. and heating does affect the speeds. the cooler is always the better.

I thing they are thinking too much about cutting prices..

Who said that 6800GT @ 1Ghz heats. And honestly being 128bit or 256 bit wont reflect on heat generated by memory chip that much.

Its not that GDDR3 runs uber cool at these speeds. try touching it when your gfx card is playing games and it will burn your finger. I had 2 6800GTs. and i did try that ghetto CPU cooler fan mod on it and ram on that played games just fine exposed. But it too did get hot enough to give you a burn but it will run without the need of special cooling.

And amount of heat generated will also depend on the manufacturing process and rated voltage of these RAM chips. This part is many times overlooked when you just compare the speed say 1Ghz to 1.2ghz( stock 7900GT speed )

And high speed memory many times work on same voltage and have same thermal ratings. Kinda like our CPU. 1.8Ghz and 2.4Ghz CPU is rated at same vcore then TDP.

These things are to be considered, and i think nvidia felt it runs without ramsinks then why increase manufacturing cost??

They are there to run business afterall..

Thanks..never touced my memory cause the leadtek card had this huge cooler that covered everything...Anyways I sold my card to a friend in Jabalpur for 11K so I can no longer verify the finger burning thingy..:P

I didi this solely to leave me no other choice but go for the 7900GT and therefore a new rig...cause my decision to upgrade was constantly getting put back....

So given that I may not OC my new card would a 7900GTX justify the price tag?
also is there a major IQ difference between the 7800GTX and 7900GTX?? any links anyone?

As far as IQ difference between 7800 and 7900 series goes, there will be none. Absolutely identical IQ on both.

7900 has no extra features ( actiually little stripped down when it comes to feature set of card with decision to leave out VIVO ).

7900GTX is way overpriced for now. Whats your major use of this card, plain gaming or gaming + productivity.

For plain gaming, 7900GT makes more sense. If you are gona spend 30k+ on the card then X1900XT makes more sense. Its fast, has best IQ, has great set of features which includes hardware accelarated video encoding and decoding( 7xxx series only offers hardware accelarated decoding) and full vivo functionality.

Now its upto you to decide.

Buy the X1900XT or X1900XTX they defeat the 7900GTX with AA, AF & HDR at max.

IMHO get the X1900XT & OC it to X1900XTX speeds maybe more.

Yep another vote for the x1900xt if you plan on spending 30k+. The shimmering is bad on the 7 series...........having personally experienced it. Other features apart i would suggest you go with the x1900 series over the 7900gtx just for IQ.

Getting back to the cooler suggestion,

nobody would mind paying an extra $20 for an nV Silencer when a 7900GT is available for $300 ;)

blade, funky, anish.....all good suggestions... Infact to make sure I upgraded I have sold off one entire system (well my folks did on my orders :P )
got rid of the 3.2E intel PBZ and 6800GT...also dumped another 80 gig HDD
shedding some of that hardware flab....

Oh am trying to get sale for one of the speakers also..17" CRT sold in chennai...before coming to mumbai...asus DVD rom given to a close friend...

Yea but arent the 7900 GT cores speed binned. I think someone was sayin on another thread that stock cards werent going beyond 515 or shthin and only the superclocked/OC versions were going 550 and above. In that case even if u buy an NV silencer it wont help u that much unless u spend more for a superclocked or OC version card.

Yeah that's right but u may get a better yield piece and get lucky....Miracles still happen...:P
