Even Apple finally admits that 8GB RAM isn't enough

- Xcode 16's best feature, Predictive Code Completion, requires an Apple silicon Mac with at least 16GB of unified memory.
- Apple has consistently said 8GB of unified memory is enough for base-model Apple silicon Macs.
- The announcement of Predictive Code Completion and Apple Intelligence highlights the problem with buying lower-spec products.

With a nice bump in price, because they have to spend a fortune in engineering and R&D to provide an additional 8GB stick.
2X the RAM, 2X the speed and 3X the performance

Introducing our revolutionary new Apple Mac base model with 16 GB Apple Optimized™ iRAM. It's unlike anything you have seen ever before. With twice the amount of RAM, you can have 50 more of your Chrome Tabs open as you surf our iStore on Safari to purchase the next Mac that we launch.

Pricing starts at 10,999 USD only.

It's not a big deal. Apple customers in the US can get a new 16 GB macbook for the price of 8 GB macbook by exchanging their current macbook.

Users in other countries can just sell their old one for cheap and get a new one.

Apple is almost monster like in its 16gb decision. They arent just fcuking their customers, they also screw their auth sellers as readymade models dont have 16gb skus with macbook airs.
So even they have to order online for clients and arent willing to sell it.
Then Apple also gets to charge 20k more for 8gb ram and nearly 40k for 16gb lol. Which is insane cause you can get ful flegded windows laptop in the price of that ram upgrade. lol

Keep fighting the good fight. Dont let Apple or the Big tech tell you that 4GB is not a perfectly good and healthy amount of RAM in 2024.

Apple does it because they know that it will still sell no matter how dumb.

Yes, but also the sales are falling. So its not that much of a done deal, is it?

Apples pricing structure is downright disgusting. The only value for money is the 14in macbook pro with m3 pro 18gb ram. Else you have Macbook air 15in with 16gb ram for 1.65L to 1.75L lol

8GB is still enough for normal people with normal tasks, browsing, writing, media playback, research work, occasional editing, even programming.
The world ran on 8GB memory for a very long time, it won't be obsolete that quickly, during this time the memory optimization have gotten a lot better, which made 8GB stay in the game longer than 4GB.

This is meant for the developer not the actual customer. The article revolves around WWDC which is for developers, but it's title make it sound like it is for the customer.

8 GB is actually plenty for most people. For the everyday users, students or those doing office work, you don't need more than that unless you have some very specific RAM intensive task to accomplish. (Word, Wxcel, PowerPoint)-ing, Browsing, Music-Video Playing, PDF reading, note taking, coding.. You're not even going to utilize all 8 GB of RAM most days. Hell 8 GB RAM can handle many older games just fine. Even the latest PhotoShop is going to run fine but that's really getting into a niche group. If somebody is serious with Photo manipulation or Video Editing, they are always going to have a beefy system to work with.

P.S. I am not justifying new product launches with 8 GB of RAM by writing the above.

It's not about the amount of RAM, it's what they are charging for that amount of RAM.

My hot take: People like that should not be buying computer worth nearly 1lakh or above for tasks like these.
