Hi ,

Whats the best/fastest router for lan purposes?

I would like all Ethernet ports to be gigabit, and I only need good Ethernet to Ethernet conectivity.
usage:
1. Connect my PC to the Home Network. (With RJ45)
2. Connect WD Live TV Hub to the Home Network. (With RJ45)
3. Connect WD My Book Live to the Home Network. (With RJ45)
4. Connect WD My Book Live Duo to the home network. (With RJ45)
5. Connect the PS4 on launch date with a RJ45 if it has enough ports else if it has WiFi
6. Connect phoneline to Airtel / Internet

I am okay with not having Wifi at all, but in that case I might want a router with 5 ports, so I either need 5 ports minimum or I need Wifi in it.

I am okay with spending upto 10K..but this can be stretched if the product is worth it.

I am also okay with importing one, so you can also suggests products that are not available in India.

Thank you.

Basically you need a home network. I think a 8port gigabit switch should suffice....
Are these 3 WD Live products connected from different rooms or in the same room?

^^ One more question :) If all 3 devices in same room then why you need 3 WD Live??
TP-link TL-SG1008D looks good.....

:)

1) The Live Duo on Raid 1 (I need backup as it has all my important data, lifetime of pictures ) (4Tb)
2) The My Book live has movies which I don't care about a backup for. (2Tb)
3) The WD Live TV hub, is the media player connected to the Plasma, which I access My Books form, as well as access them from the PC. (1Tb)
This player only stores TV shows...
4) I did not add there is also a Tata Sky HD recorder, but that I dont add to the network. (500Gb)

My PC only has SSD's now. (3 ssd's)

If they are all placed in the same room same place a Gigabit switch like the TPLink would be the good choice.
You should get good speed if all devices support gigabit and you use good quality cat 6 cable.

Perfect...and then connect this to a modem? to access the net.....

Will this switch also assign the IP address or I have to manual make them all static...
I mean like my router now does...?

I hated networking in university and now it shows....

no need to do anything.just connect all devices to switch & connect switch to router which will assign ip(using DHCP).switch themselves don't do anything except providing connectivity.

So will the following two do for my purpose:
1. TP-LINK TD-8817 ADSL2+ Ethernet/USB Wired with Modem Router
2. TP-link TL-SG1008D 8 port

Thanks a lot.

they should since tp-link 8817 product info page states it has NAT router functionality.btw if you haven't already bought 8817 i suggest spending ~200 more & get 8840T which is a better model & has 4 lan ports just in case you need(trust me sometimes you just do).

TD8840T also uses broadcom chipset & i am using it for last 2 years with no issues whatsoever.this model can run 24x7 even in hot summer days in a top floor room with no ac just fan & still works fine.

Yeah I thought it did too. But only the earlier 8840 used the Broadcom chipset. The newer 8840T switched to Trendchip. You probably have the earlier 8840 model.

Burdening a modem with router duty as well would be inadvisable IMHO.

If you want a really fast wired router, check out Mikrotik : RB2011UAS-RM/RB750GL . Configuring it might be difficult though :p

OT, sorry @Infected :angelic:

Your post made me look into the Microtik routers and they look really interesting. I was thinking of getting one just to experiment/learn stuff. For a home/soho environment how does it compare with other DD-WRT/OpenWRT capable routers?

I am more inclined towards this model -- http://routerboard.com/RB951G-2HnD. Your thoughts? :)

@Crazy_Eddy

I got the below pricing from Indian resellers.

RB751G-2HnD - Rs 4650 incl delivery
RB951G-2HnD - Rs 4650 incl delivery
RB750GL - Rs 3650 incl delivery

6 months warranty

I have ordered the 2 TP-links, but thats ok I can cancel it not an issue.
But Isn't there any 5 or more Gigabit port router with a modem, maybe I am going back to square one.
But this just seems like the best solution....

i don't think you can find a modem with more than 4 gigabit ports because modems are usually designed keeping home consumers in mind who don't even even utilize all of the provided lan ports.best solution is to get a modem/router+switch.my suggestion is use the modem first without getting a router just to see if it can withstand heavy duty usage during summer because if it does then i doubt it will have any problems running in future.but if it doesn't work you can always replace the modem using warranty(both tp-link & dlink provides 3 years warranty) & then buy a router to lessen the load on modem as @Crazy_Eddy suggested.

Sorry I've not used either so can't compare  Like you I had come across them long back and they looked interesting.

From what I could tell back then, they're good with wired performance. But if you're looking at the wireless aspect, they tend to be pretty ordinary. No idea how the implementation on the RB951G does, but I remember reading that standalone Wifi cards like the R52n and all had a noisy signal. Could also be signal clipping because of the high output power.

No problem, I just assumed you've used them. ;)

I am not much interested in the wireless performance, but wanted one with a USB port. RB750GL doesn't have one, and the next models are RB751G-2HnD and RB951G-2HnD. Not sure why they are priced the same though, as the RB951 comes with double the RAM and a better CPU.

Will read more on these routers and decide! :)

Keep modem and switch distinct if you expect to get good speeds on gigabit network.
Having a 1gig port is not the same as being able to get 1 gig speeds on that port.

Look for a 8 port gig switch for approx 5k which supports jumbo frames. You will see a max throughput of 40 MBps on such a switch.

A router will give you a steady 20-25 MBps max unless u go for a very expensive Cisco/ Juniper device. (~20k).

Modem choice you can now keep as per your ISP speeds.

This will also give you flexibility to change your ISP as and when needed without touching your main home network.

Plus, even if the modem goes kaput, your internal network will always work.

As of now I am only getting about 10MBps :( on wired and it drops if I go wireless.
I have still not confirmed my order, do let me know if the products I selected are okay or please suggest some others.

....till now:
1. TP-LINK TD-8817 ADSL2+ Ethernet/USB Wired with Modem Router
2. TP-link TL-SG1008D 8 port

I kinda need the 8 ports....
