We've learned that the massive GT200 chip is going to get smaller. Nvidia has been working on a 55nm versuion of the chip for a while, and we wrote about this on several occasions.

Nvidia is currently finalizing the clocks on the chip and it is waiting to see the final performance of R700. Nvidia's chip is likely to be slightly faster than ATI's dual chip offering, but we suspect that the performance will be quite close.

Nvidia is certainly not giving up without a fight, as Nvidia's entire marketing was based on the fact that Nvidia was a performance leader. Nvidia simply cannot let the crown slip out of its hands and that is why Nvidia works so hard to maintain its performance dominance.

ATI has never been so close, but this is good, as Nvidia will get its focus back and it will make the world a better place.

Just to spice it up, Nvidia would surely tweak some good clocks out of its 55nm, check this out gtx 280 on 735/1575/1325,

VR-Zone : Technology Beats - XFX GeForce GTX 280 1GB XXX: Enough to stop the competition?

and comparing this with the Leadtek 280 Extreme which was seen

Leadtek GeForce GTX 280 Extreme 1024MB GDDR3 TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail

here, had these clocks 738/1666/1260

If the extreme is anything to go by what the 55nm will be clocked as, it seems 4870x2 will meet its match pretty soon!

Just how 'cheap' will these 55nm GPUs be?

The manufacturing of these cards would be cheaper than the current 280/260. So when these are launched and according to their performance in comparison with 48xx series (with higher clocks), their prices will be set however, I would expect them to replace the current 200 series, and cost a little less. Lets hope Nvidia is not that greedy this time!

i think they will be launched around the same price point as the current gtx 260/280 or lower and ofcourse these 2 cards will be phased out
