Gaming Comp (CPU only) for Rs.40K

Q 1: What is your budget?

Rs. 40 K

Q 2: What is your existing hardware configuration (component name - component brand and model)

Not worth mentioning... I'll be keeping my UPS/speakers. Will be getting rid of monitor/keyboard and mouse during my future (4-6 months) upgrades.. Changing only CPU for now...

Q 3: Which hardware will you be keeping/BUYING IN THE FUTURE (component name - component brand and model)

Monitor - for now until I buy either a Dell U2311 or ASUS PA238Q... Rs.40K is exclusively for CPU

Numeric UPS - 600va (sadly bought it only recently so am not changing this)

Speakers - New Altec Lansing 2.1 speakers

KB and mouse for now... upgrade in later purchase

Q 4: Which hardware component are you looking to buy (component name). If you have already decided on a configuration then please mention the (component brand and model) as well, this will help us in fine tuning your requirement.

CPU - AMD is first preference, but I've heard AMD is not competitive until Bulldozer comes out, if true, then Intel is fine...

Cabinet - NZXT... I saw/kinda like the Gamma, but I would like to go for the Vulcan M-atx if its possible?

RAM - only one 4GB stick.. will be adding more in the coming months

USB 3.0 - is a must for me/preferably on motherboard itself... I'm looking to keep it a little bit future proof...

Q 5: Is this going to be your final configuration or you would be adding/upgrading a component in near future. If yes then please mention when and which component

Yes, will upgrade the following within 6 months

RAM - Add one or maybe two extra 4GB RAM sticks

Monitor - Dell U2312 or ASUS PA238Q

KB and mouse - good gaming ones - TBD later

Ethernet card - Anything special or will stock ethernet card work fine?

Q 6: Where will you buy this hardware? (Online/City/TE Dealer)

Chennai's ever famous Richie Street!

Open to online purchase - Only if great deals.. Coz I hate to wait! :eek:hyeah:

Q 7: Would you consider buying a second hand hardware from the TE market

No

Q 8: What is your intended use for this PC/hardware

Gaming

Browsing

Watching HD movies

Rarely GIMP...

Q 9: Do you have any brand preference or dislike? Please name them and the reason for your preference/dislike.

None

FIFA 11

Microsoft Flight Sim

Team Fortress 2

Q 11: What is your preferred monitor resolution for gaming and normal usage

Gaming - Not sure, but as good as it can go...

Desktop - I believe U2311 and PA238Q can go 1900/1028 (or whatever else it does :bleh:)

Q 12: Are you looking to overclock?

No

Q 13: Which operating system do you intend to use with this configuration?

Windows 7 64 bit

Linux - Ubuntu

Thanks @alpha17..

* Didn't know that about the Vulcan...

* Do I need a H67 board - I read somewhere that the H67 is more for overclockers... I'm not looking at doing much of that!

* nVidia vs ATI/AMD?

* BTW, already have Altec Lansing 2.1 speakers.. Dont know exact name but I bought it for about 1.6K a month ago, and I'm very pleased with the quality!

* Monitor purchase is put off for a couple of months - waiting to see if Dell U2312 is good vs ASUS PA238Q

Thanks for your help... Also looking for more others' points of view as well!

I am going to answer the questions I've bolded out --

1) The H67 motherboard is Intel's value -- mainstream motherboard, not for over-clocking it is P67 and Z68 based motherboards which can be used to over-clock.

2) nVidia really gets competitive with the GTX 560 Ti ~ 13500/- price tag, while anything below that is too anemic to last more than a season [GTX 550 Ti and below cards get mauled badly by their AMD counterparts, namely the AMD HD 6850 @current price-point].

If you want AMD graphics chips then stay @14000/- price-point and grab the AMD HD 6950 1GB, these should last for atleast 1 year to run games @full HD = high eye candy.

Here are articles on the same --

AMD HD 6950 1GB vs. nVidia GTX 560 Ti --> AnandTech - Bench - GPU11.

Hope this clarifies Sire and please feel free to ask queries.

Corsair TX V2 650 for 6500? :S

Buddy its selling for 5300 at some places... :)

My mistake Sire, thanks for correcting. Edited it out as well.

^^ Oh found a bit more on the H67 chipset Sire --> Intel Sandy Bridge Core i5-2500K & Core i7-2600K Processors Review - Page 4 / Intel Core i7 2600K & i5 2500K "Sandy Bridge" Review - Page 3 - Closer Look: P67 & H67 Express chipsets.

why does everyone keep recommending 1600mhz memory for motherboards that support only 1333mhz max? is the price diff between the 2 negligible? and is there a loss of performance?

^^ Sire it really doesn't cause any problems, if the user doesn't over-clock his modules it stays down @1333 MHz, but if he starts to crank the multiplier on the CPU well he hits 1600 MHz which gives a decent jump in performance.

Also AMD Llano chips respond very well to faster RAM clocks ~ 1866 MHz actually make the Redwood IGP perform better than a 1600 MHz module. Here is a read on the same -- AMD A8-3850 Review - AMD Announces Llano for Desktops / http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/cpus/2011/06/30/amd-a8-3850-review/1.

I agree that there is no reason to give a user anything over 1600 MHz, but the price and value dictated by the 1600 MHz RAM modules is enough to justify their purchase over a standard 1333 MHz module. For a price addition of ~200/- user gets a heat-spreader and over-clockable mainstream chips. But in current scenario only Llano shows advantage of faster speed RAM modules out-of the box.

i5 2500 for 9500? Where? I guess you meant the i5 2400?

a few questions:

1. Mobo - ASUS vs MSI vs Intel?

2. Intel i5-2400 vs i5-2500K?

3. If its nVidia GTX 560 Ti, which brand to go for? If its AMD 6950 which one to go for? I guess finally it will be down to the best price I get at Richie street when I arrive there :eek:hyeah:

1. Mobo - ASUS vs MSI vs Intel?

Buy Intel DH67BL (B3) ~ 5.2k along with i5 2400 ~ 9.3k

Intel i5-2400 vs i5-2500K?

No need to go for a k Series proccy if you are really not into overclocking... ;)

If its nVidia GTX 560 Ti, which brand to go for? If its AMD 6950 which one to go for?

If you are buying GTX560 then i would advice you to buy MSI GTX560 Twin Frozr II ~ 13750 and if you are looking to buy HD6950 then Buy MSI HD6950 Twin Frozr II or buy Sapphire HD6950 2GB Reference Edition which can be unlocked to HD6970... (It depends on luck)

OK, based on what I've seen discussed above, I think I can safely call this my config:

* NZXT Gamma

* Intel i5-2400

* Intel DH67BL (B3) - might switch over to ASUS P8H67V depending on what deal I get

* GSkill Ripjaws 1600MHz 4GB stick

* Corsair TX V2 650W

* Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 500GB or 1TB

* MSI GTX560 Twin Frozr II - might switch over to Sapphire HD6950 2GB again based on the deal, esp. if I get the Intel mobo which is cheaper.. (Looks like I might be getting the rig without the GPU and then go in for the GPU end of the month when I get my salary :bleh: )

Any last words? I'll be visiting Richie street this saturday... :hap2: Maybe I'll bump into one of you if you like to wander Richie street :tongue:

Oh and thanks a ton to Alpha17, Hades, Abracadabra, Touzeen and Viralbug!!! And TE!!

@Cool_Dude_Prav: When you're at Richie street, could you note down the cost of the Gamma, Barracuda 1TB and 6950 for me please?

Can u ask the price of Z5500??

NZXT Gamma AFAIK is not avail readily in ritchie... Even if avail, its overpriced... ITDEPOT has it for 1935/-(If they quote high, kindly PM me.. I hav a friend in one of their branches)..
