The Android Silver project, which was rumored earlier this month, has today been corroborated by four fresh sources, all of whom point to a major shift in Google's mobile strategy. The Information reports that the current scheme of offering Nexus-branded handsets with Google's unadulterated vision of the best Android user experience will be scrapped, to be replaced by a set of high-end Silver phones that will closely adhere to it. The change is both expansive and expensive, as Google is said to be planning to spend heavily on promoting these devices in wireless carriers' stores and through advertising, essentially subsidizing the development and marketing costs for its hardware partners.

In exchange for this new contribution, Google will gain tighter control over the software shipping on the selected phones. The promise is that the company will clean up third-party bloatware, ensure prompt and reliable software updates, and introduce a real standard and consistency to the user experience across Android Silver devices. LG and Motorola are identified as the likeliest candidates for taking part, with the first phones anticipated as soon as next year, while Samsung, HTC, and Sony might need a bit more convincing. Then again, all three of the latter companies have already offered Google Play Editions of their leading phones, which might be the closest analog we have at the moment for what an Android Silver device will look and act like.

So basically speaking, no more cheap nexus phones. If you want pure android, be prepared to pay shitloads of money. But less bloatware across all phones.

I thik Google are selling a lot of Nexus devices and I am sure it would be retained or there would be devices cheap which will have the pure android experience.

The idea behind the GPE editions was to have the pure android experience with premium hardware which the manufactures make. Eighter the nexus series would remain or the GPE editions for other phones which are not quite high in the price segment would come.

Eighter way Google will not go apple way of selling only expensive phones.

The Nexus phone and tablet range is already quite impressive so what can they do to change/improve things this year? They can't keep releasing a new Nexus phone or tablet with slightly better hardware and features. They're barely making any profit compared to Samsung, LG, HTC due to their low prices and its common knowledge that Nexus 5 didn't sell as well as the Nexus 4, nor will the next Nexus sell even better. Earlier the argument was that they wanted to take over the phone market and also set a standard among Android phones- which has worked admirably but now that the tablet and phone market is theirs and 4.4 is perfect, it only makes sense for them to evolve their strategy. Good call imo.

Afaik, no. Then again the N5 did release smoothly unlike the N4 which was unavailable for months and didn't even launch in many countries at first so I may be wrong actually.

Nope , nexus 5 did sell more than nexus 4.

Atleast in india. I see it in the hands of every other person.

Nexus 5 is very much Hit for Google as well as for LG.
N5 outsell the N4 in most of the region coz of well stocked phones as well wide variety of colors, cases and wireless chargers.

Coming back to Silver series, they are no different from GPE of every flagship phone present today.
Just Google need to improve/add in their APIs support for Dual camera - HTC, Heart Beat Sensor - SGS5, Humidity sensor/Barometer, Knock-Knock etc which are present on most flagship phones.

Afaik? and what is your source man? You just know? Nexus 5 sold alot in India and is still selling in a alot of quantity.

Nexus 5 was the best selling nexus phone since inception.
Though nexus phones barely touch a few million in sales.
For ex: galaxy nexus touched just one million, a record until n4 broke it.
So every nexus iteration has outsold it's predecessor

I knew that hence was a little skeptical when he said it..

Anyways, Nexus devices will continue to sell well and mind you thats very good for Google even if they make a small loss.

android silver = google play edition

quite pricey arent' they those google play editions.

So what will replace affordable nexus ? nothing.

Nexus continues, google play gets called android silver.

NEW DELHI: Tech media is abuzz with speculations that Google is refreshing its Nexus programme. And as per the new scheme of things, it may not launch Nexus 6 smartphone. This information comes courtesy EVLeaks, a Twitter user who has leaked accurate information about gadgets across several manufacturers.

It was widely expected that Google will unveil Nexus 6 in October or November, the same time that Nexus 4 and 5 were announced in the last two years. Google's head for Android, Sundar Pichai, earlier this year said that Nexus 6 will not be launched till July but he did not hint that the smartphone will not be launched at all. However, it now seems that users will now have to wait another three months to get their hands on the official Google phone.

In a series of tweets, EVLeaks talked about the death of Nexus 6 and arrival of Google's new product line, Android Silver.
