He has less than 35 posts right now, no editing privs.
Like has been pointed out before 8800gt makes sense only at 8k.

bingoUV said:48xx is a great piece of hardware and beats all of nvidia's current offerings to dust. No doubt about that. But come on guys, *nix support?
1. I had read the phoronix article last week. Most of the sentences in it saying "AMD is doing this in latest drivers from last week" can be replaced by "Nvidia has been doing this for many years". For *nix of course.
2. Where are my FreeBSD and OpenSolaris drivers?
3. Dual monitors? ATI guys edit xorg.conf and pray. Nvidia guys use a script supplied by Nvidia to set up dual monitors with xinerama on linux.
4. AMD is yet to support CrossFireX on linux. Nvidia supports SLI on linux since Dec 3rd, 2005.
Completely irrelevant fact: CrossFire was released in Sept 2005.
5. Out of the box support? Drivers on CD? Laughable. Linux kernel gets updated every 2 months. You need a new set of drivers. Slightly tweaked code to fit in with the latest version of linux kernel. CD is too old fashioned for this. Your distribution simply downloads the latest driver for you whenever the kernel is updated.
6. "The way it is meant to be played" might be pure marketing. But so is, so far, AMD's *nix support. They have been making a lot of right noises about linux support. But Nvidia has been supplying quality *nix drivers for a long time. I am aware of recent issues but most of them were fixed.
How many of you saying ATI graphics supports linux have ever tried to troubleshoot ATI drivers on linux? I have troubleshooted Intel/Nvidia/ATI graphics on linux and some BSDs for 5+ years. Take it from me.
It is you who are dazzled by AMD's marketing about linux support.
Guess who came up with updated drivers first when xorg released a new beta version? Before even the final release of xorg's new version?
AMD graphics might have a great future on linux one day. AMD has taken steps to ensure this in the long term. Publication of specs is a huge step that will make AMD's drivers near bug free, no hassle, super-performant one day. Nvidia will become a windows only choice. But that day is about 1 or 2 years away.

You are implying one of these?
1. Only gamers need graphics cards: So, Compiz-Fusion does not exist? Nor do linux movie players exist? 10 graphical terminals cannot be started in linux if you have at least 256 MB graphics memory?
2. Wine HQ does not exist. Linux games cannot run better given better graphics hardware.
For implying either of the above you need to have an ignorance of elephantine proportions.
Despite this, you posted a link to the phoronix article I was talking about. Care to explain why? May I go and congratulate AMD's marketing department for making an unreasonable fanboy?
Poor guy never asked which graphics card should I buy. Read his first post and it will be clear he just wanted to confirm some things about a card he had already chosen.morgoth said:Nope...
I am implying that ashfame needed a gfx card PRIMARILY TO PLAY GAMES and, based on what we know from reviews of gfx cards and the way these cards render games, he has made an excellent choice by going for 4850 instead of getting 8800GT.
As far as Linux and gfx cards are concerned, my knowledge is purely theoretical as I have never used Linux so far. Of course, Phoronix is one source on which I rely to know more about Linux scene. Now if it is saying that ATI has improved a lot I believe it to be true unless proved otherwise.
You yourself wrote "AMD graphics might have a great future on linux one day. AMD has taken steps to ensure this in the long term. Publication of specs is a huge step that will make AMD's drivers near bug free, no hassle, super-performant one day. Nvidia will become a windows only choice (why? is it becoz now it does not provide good enough support for Linux. After all, if AMD cards are getting better with Linux it does not mean that Nvidia will be routed. Are you saying no longer Nvidia's heart is with linux or do you mean to imply that now when AMD has shown what open source drivers - i use the term very loosely - actually mean, Nvidia's practices look like sham?)"
Now if somebody is looking to get a good gfx card for gaming along with a decent support for Linux why should he not get ATI's 48XX series cards? Technologically as well price/performance wise they are better than what competitor offers.
All said and done, why is it that you are jumping gun now when ashfame has already bought a card? When he was seeking advice, I did not see you posting anything about Linux and gfx cards. ^o
