Personally it is just about OK. I am using Nokia N81 and it is more loud than this. both have enough clarity. I dont know why the reviews are raving about this player. I have changed the head set. connected them to speakers, but volume is still average.
A dedicated music player must be having lots of options, more Loudness, better format support. I cannot see the details of the file I am playing such as what is the quality of the track.etc...etc...I tried to play a Mp4 rip but it gave a message format not supported.
