I have a 160GB seagate....its been 1.5 years since i bought it, its out of warranty now.

Am plannin for a Hitachi 250gigs SATA....so...shud i sell this or keep it?

2 possibilities :

1. Keep HDD. Put it in a external HDD casing....use it permanently as a USB HDD....

2. Sell it for a measly amount....bah, hardly 2K-2.5K

This HDD is gr8...dropped it frm a height of 1.5feet onto solid concrete...nothing happened...

and, will using a USB casing degrade the HDD performance? the last time i used one on my P3, the secondary IDE channel wudnt work :| and do these cheapo HDD cases perform well?

i'm in no urgent need of money ( all upgrade plans wiped out :yahoo: )

Keep it if you need a lot of Hard Disk Space.

Also if your a freak needing to run around town with Data or Transferring files, then keep it with an external casing.

If youve burnt a hole in your Pocket and are kangal and need money, sell it. YOu will fetch hardly 2k for it dude.

keep it.... or donate it to me..... :P

I could use an additional HDD. I have actually kept my comp off for the past 2 days coz downloading has filled my HDD to capacity and I have been too lazy to go and buy some blank DVDs :P

1.5 yr old still out of warranty was seagate providing 1 yr warranty or wht????

btw i think 2k is less 4 160gb..since i sold my 80gb disc 4 2k to frnd..but since its out of warranty...its 2 much....lol

nyways its better to sell it ard your frnd circle.......but if i was u i had used it 4 xperince or store download stuffs...or may b linux.........

dont sell hdd. seagate offers 5 year warranty for hdd? go to seagate website and check warranty. you will not get much for second hand hdd keep it with you for backup use as external HDD with casing.

Just bought a Hitachi 160GB PATA for 4050/- ... when attached to computer speed approx 48MB/S for 2GB large file transfer and when placed in external USB case speed approx 23MB/S for same file ..... speed half in USB case :( ..... I understand most cases available here have about the same speed.

Well, Sunny is planning to keep it. I offered to buy it if the price is right and no one else approached him before me.

@Sunny --- Keep my offer in mind dude.... I am not promising anything but if you do put it on sale, I MAY buy it.

hey assuming complexity wasnt an issue ,how hard wud it be to make a harddisk into a portable mp3 player ? regardless of how tuff it is, anyideas of what the issues wud be ?

for eg:

1.power would be a major problem.but once u can boot it up,we can probably just run the player on startup ?

2.we can think bout user interface later, maybe interface an lcd /7 segment display and parallel port for maybe next song ,play pause, etc .

The standard 3.5" hard disk would take up quite a lot of power, compared to a laptop 2.5" drive or a mini 1.8" drive. we're talking about a 12v supply as well ;) . You'd need a heavy duty battery with a lot of juice.

Plus the drives werent designed for portable operation so the chances of the disk failing due to the drive being shaken around during operation will increase.

The circuitry would be the next hurdle.

All in all wouldnt be exactly portable/compact.

Can any one tell me how to put my 20Gb Seagate HDD in an exteranal casing, i wish to use it as external Hard Disc, carrying it to my friends house, etc..

Buy an 3.5" external casing from your local computer shop, some 600 bux.

Plug in the drive and voila! External Hard Disk ready.

600? its 1200 here :( well, will get the casing anyway..410GB..gives me immense bragging rights :ohyeah:

@Nikhil : I already told ya, H00ligan is first on the line :P

whaaaao...

the thing is, i'm worried cheapo cases might not perform upto the mark....i definely dont hve 2500 to spend on such a case :S

last time i heard it was 700 here in mumbai......but do check with the disc installation there only...i saw 1 guy buying one...but on putting the hard disc in....the screws hole were not properly placed so dropped the plan to buy

Look at this way you buy a cheapo case for 600 bux, and assuming Eazy's case is the best in market for 2500 /-. It gives a performance of 23 MBPS, assuming the cheapo case is 30% slower you havea transfer speed of around 16 MBPS, now transferring a 4 GB file will take 173 secs and transferring the same on cheapo case will take 250 Secs, you will have to stay at your pals place for a minute and half extra.

oops edited my post after reading chaos figure later....i misquoted the figure i guess sorry for that....confused between bits and bytes
