HDTV flickers momentarily when the fridge compressor turns on!

I recently happened to notice that when the compressor of our fridge kicks in, the Samsung LCD flickers for an instant i.e. goes off and resumes itself in less than a second. The LCD is connected to a Belkin 8-way surge protector. We never faced this issue in our previous residence however. The only difference here being the MX surge protector instead of the Belkin one.

I am assuming in the long run, this might do some damage to the display. Can a voltage stabiliser resolve this flickering problem? Many TIA.

I think the LCD TVs should be used with a stabilizer from day one.
I also use a V Guard Crystal Plus model for my Samsung.
Also I think it'll be a good idea to get the electrical system and wiring of the house inspected by a good technician since the fridge compressor should not normally cause such a dip.

We have put the LCD and the costly electronics on Servo stabilizers. Do that and u do not need to bother about it again.

Had the same issues as well. Installed a V-guard stabilizer (cheap one) and the problem seems to have been taken care of. Atleast, it hasn't happened while switching on lights/ups trips in the days after fitment. However, owing to the persistent rains, the AC units are enjoying a well deserved break!

Hey thanks man! Will get myself a V-Guard stabiliser unit today. There's a dealer who does home deliveries and I had the stabiliser for the AC unit delivered by him.

I know I should have invested in a stabiliser. I was previously using an APC 800VA UPS until the unit started overheating and the 'battery dead' indicator kept blinking. The battery was only 6 months old. Ditched the UPS and had the entire system connected to the socket directly via the surge protector. As for getting the wiring checked, I'll have to do that some day.

Servo stabilisers must be quite expensive init? I don't think I have that kind of a budget!

Get a stabilizer like V-guard crystal upto 440watt or (crystal+ 660watt if you intend to use the UPS and pc) .
The Apc ups is programmed to do AVR only if the voltage of mains goes above 253v or below 196v.Now your samsung lcd or for that matter any electronic product are designed to operate only upto 240v and in India we get voltages well above 240v which is quite common at night or during the period right after summer.

A Stabilizer like the vguard crystal will maintain a voltage of around 220v to 230v irrespective of high voltage, which is ideal for electronic devices. If you attach a UPS you will also get back up and the tv won't flicker if you switch on the AC or Water pump etc, since the UPS will go to back up mode for a brief second.

In my house i use a Smart UPS and a stabilizer both together.

So a stabilizer better than a UPS?? I have connected my 42 inch LED to a 600VA UPS and have not yet faced any issues (touchwood).
Can anyone pls explain which is preferred? Since 2 members have faced this problem recently its nice to be educated and prepared... TIA

Not all UPS are the same,if one has the more expensive online UPS then thats a better solution vs a stabilizer.

The most cheap UPS and inverters just give back up and have no AVR(automatic voltage regulation) .
Most modern UPS like the ones from APC does AVR but thats secondary and they are limited in their capability as explained in the previous post.A stabilizer on the other hand is tailor made just to do AVR,so it can do avr from a wide range of voltage from as low as 140v to as high as 290v.

Hey thanks Arun! Called up the local V-Guard dealer and he quoted a price of 2.9k for the Crystal which is just too expensive! Flipkart has the Crystal Plus for 2650 inclusive of shipping which is a great deal IMO. I intend to use only the Samsung display with the stabiliser.

Will get it via Flipkart. :)

I bought it locally here the V-guard crystal plus for around Rs 2300 7 months ago,if you have a place equivalent to SP road like in bangalore you may get it cheaper.
Crystal should be even cheaper.

My display is a 40 incher plus maybe I could connect an AVR as well in the near future. :)

Unfortunately this guy was listed as a dealer in V-Guard's site and thus I got in touch with him when I wanted the AC's stabiliser unit. Besides, thanks to the hectic schedules at work I barely get time to move out of the house once I am back.

Placed an order for the Crystal+ a while back. Let's see when it turns up. I hope it does before I leave for my hometown this weekend!

@ adder

How about connecting stabilizer at Mains of suppose 5KVa to take care of AVR and all other fluctuations as this will provide stable( with some lag of 1-2 msec's) voltage to whole house.Plus having UPS ( Inverter ) for whole house taking care of backup ( yes Online UPS is best ) ?

I too faced this but very rare and did this :
1.5KVa Stabilizer @ Main's for all Light Switch + few Power Switch.
2.Dedicated power line( 4mm wire minimum ) for A/C's with Stabilizer's.

Got Standalone Stabilizer for Electronics which is lying unused since going with above.

@jhononweed
5 KVA stabilizer@ mains is good for fans and lights but not for AVR. Think it as Inverter for house vs UPS for computer. A lower wattage stabilizer specially designed for Digital electronics like LED TVs has some added features which are not found in high wattage stabilizers designed for mains.

404 - Page not found error appears on that link. Post the links for the individual model. I guess the VG Crystal Plus is the model suggested for 40+ inchers.

Plz copy the entire link and paste...it works here.

not opening that way too :(

even i have a 50" plasma T.V., and am using APC BR1100CI-IN 1.1KVA UPS coupled with a belkin spike-guard for it, and my PS3, media player, STB, 5.1 speakers are connected to it (though not necessarily all at the same time).
