PC Peripherals Help me to identify why my PC is not booting

Hi all,

I went for a vacation for 3 weeks. I returned today and was shocked to see my PC not booting up. When I start up my PC, the HD led flashes for a micro sec and then stops, the DVD writer gets detected and then everything stops. I mean the machine keeps running but nothing happens.

I also found that the PC is making a different sound, a dull and muffled version of the sound it used to make. My specs in short:

Mobo - Abit IP35e
Proccy-Intel E8200
Ram- 2GB
SMPS- CM 500 V
HD - WD 360 GB
GPU - Nvidia 8600 GT

I am at a complete loss. Any help would be appreciated.

u mean the beep sound? is it a long beep?

i think this could be a ram issue, may be it might have gathered dust lying idle.

just remove the ram sticks, clean the sticks and the ram slots and then place it back. try it out.

IMO take all the parts apart clean them & put them back together.

Although it could be the fault of RAM or Dust as well.

when was the last time you dismantled, cleaned & reassembled your PC?

if it was more than 8 months before than clean your PC again.

Hey , Thanks for the suggestion. I do clean my Pc once in a while, but I only dust off w/o removing any components.

Are you suggesting to remove all the components individually and the cables , clean them up and then reconnect again?

In that case is it ok to remove the fan, heat sink and proccy for cleaning?

No I dont have any beep sound, I was referring to the general sound that my PC would make when started.

I tried to reset my CMOS and it has added some more complexity. Now my PC is double booting whenever I start it up and goes on to the affore mentioned state after the 2nd boot.

Did I corrupt my BIOS?????????????

Does the monitor wake for boot when u press the power botton?

anyways the best option is to reassemble and try again.

The first time I start everything (put on the power switch ) the monitor LED does go green for a second. But after that it remains orange no matter how many times I restart the PC (w/o switching off the power supply).

I hope this helps.

My ip35-E too hangs at the abit logo screen i took everything apart cleaned and assembled it out side the cabby ram memteast 3 passes no errors ran seatools to check the hard disk long generic no errors it passes the test .Ran
occt for 45 mins no errors. So i put everything back in the bijli and powered On it BSOD said something like KERNEL_STALK_INPAGE_ERROR so ran chdsk and booted into safe mode ran a virus scan again ran seatools its OK now
i think:ashamed:.

This is due to old mobos and loose contacts. Take out everything (would recommend someone experienced though its pretty simple if you wanna try) and reassemble the comp after cleaning everything.

Though you could also just tighten the RAM/HDD and try. These things tend to get loose the most and cause issues like yours.

Hey thanks for all of your replies. Last night I took out everything and started cleaning and reassembling all of the parts. The source of the problem was probably dust in my proccy and/or mobo. My machine is now booting alright. Thx for all your suggestions.

1. I have a couple of other things in my mind. The strange sound that I was talking about was coming from the GPU fan and it "looked" to me as if the fan is rotating at a drastically reduced speed. Are there any tools to verify if the fans are working at their rated frequency at full load. And, in case the fans are faulty will I be better off giving the card for RMA or buying a better fan. How much will such a "not-too-expensive" VFM  fan cost?

2. Also looking at the amount of dust accumulated in my heat sink, I was able to partially clean them using a soft cloth. Is there any better way to clean them or prevent the dust getting inside the cabinet in the first place. I have a Zebronics Peace cabby.
