Does these compare well to the Massdrop X Sennheiser HD 58x ? My HPs are collecting dust (others being HD 598, 770 pro), wanted to clean house but could never sell it

Definitely worth upgrading. Hifiman's are the next-tier upgrade to the HD599. I found the HD599 to be boomy and muddy in the mids. Never tried them with an AMP though.

You found HD599 muddy/ booming? To me they sounded kind of bass light ( perfectly fine with me...too sensitive to lower frequencies)
