Home air purifiers effective for improving indoor air quality?

@Renegade So did you buy anything?

I too am now thinking of an air purifier. I am in Mumbai and want to use the purifier mainly as my younger one is allergic to dust and smells. Doctor have told keep away from dust and wear mask etc and eveything. And also told not to use perfume and stay away from agarbatti smoke etc.

I am not sure how I will use the air purifier as windows of my home aren't kept closed full day but at least I intend to use half a day in whatever room that is closed.

Can anyone suggest me which one is good with easy to replace filters (don't want company going bust tomorrow and no filters avaailable). Washable filters (if they exist) even better. No clue what HEPA is but if it is supposed to be mandatorily there then I want it and AQI surely I want.
Yes the Levoit one, I posted above. Doesnt have any of what you require. From your requirement I think either Coway AirMega 150 (washable) or the Xiaomi Air Purifier 4 Lite (smart with AQI) are good options.

Only the pre-filters are washable. HEPA filters can never be washed. Some manufacturers mention that filters can be vacuumed instead of washed.

The levoit one you got has like 75K ratings. That is mind boggling. Price seems good. Did you experience any real difference after using? Not placebo difference (I understand it is difficult to distinguish).

I also got Levoit Core Mini, does it automatically turn off or something when air quality is reached at good level or is it manual only?
Full manual

That rating is for all Levoit products as they have listed them all as variants. A good strategy to boost ratings but difficult to find which product has how many and what ratings.

Yesterday I cama across "Electrostatic Air Purifiers" on the following Reddit thread. Does anyone have any idea about it?

It advertises that there is no need to change filters or anything. Just wash it. Zero maintenance costs. It is advertised that it catches extremely tiny particles (even smaller that what HEPA filters catch).

So since my last post, I am binge watching reviews etc on youtube. I realize a 5K range air purifier is what I want because I live in matchbox flat and bedroom is small)
Levoit seems actually very good and small and reviews (even from outside India) are good. But I could not find its replacement filter on amazon. What is the filter cost?

Also, did you happen to consider the Honeywell that seems almost similar in terms of eveything including price? Honeywell seems to have 2 year warranty and filter life seems to be approx 1 year as per amazon page which is more than levoit.

But for this too i could not find filter on Amazon.

Another consideration at ₹6000 is Agaro Royal which is also almost same but has app control and a visual element (red, yellow, green light) to indicate air quality.
Not sure of filter life but i read reviews on Amazon that say 3000 hours which seems less I guess?

Confused between all these models. What is the filter cost of levoit? In terms of looks and portability, it looks best but the agaro at 1k more is enticing for its smart connected features.

How these air purifier supposed to be used? Only in bed room? I read its effective only when used in closed environment. In that case how it will be effective in living room/kitchen and all?

Please describe your use cases and how efficiently you are using it like only in bedroom or for entire house?

I have the Coway AirMega 150 which I bought in 2020. I only use the product for a couple of months each year and the filter is still fine. The pre filter is washable while the carbon and HEPA filter can only be replaced, atleast as per the manufacturer. They cost 1500 and 3000 respectively(available on the Coway website).
But just taking out the filter and shaking the dust off once in a while helps.

A home air purifier is basically a fan that runs air through filters. Each has a defined capacity which is the amount of air it can reliably purify. It's supposed to be used in a closed room, so if you open the doors/windows or want to use one for the whole house, it won't really work well or would take really long.

It basically passes extremely high voltage through fins (like ac fins) to make a static electric field and that field catches the dust. The fans just pass air through the fins at low speed. I think the unit operates at 15-20W. For indian conditions, this would be a better option. But we'd have to wash the fins every week to make it perform in top condition.

These are less efficient than the HEPA filters for smaller particles, which are the ones that matter. Also their filtration efficiency drops as the particles accumulate, whereas HEPA will suffer from lower airflow but will still filter everything.

If you are in a high pollution area like Delhi, note that the filter will be unusable well before the 8500 hrs that Coway assumes. The filter change light on the device will only glow after 8500hrs. But if you are not getting a blue light after running it for a couple of hours, it means the filter is not working well enough anymore and you should get a new one.
I was able to notice this because I have two of these, and the new one was blowing 10x more air.

My old filter only lasted two winters. I bought both the carbon but HEPA, but the carbon is really just for the nice smell it gives, will only buy the HEPA in future.

In case this is of interest to anyone looking for an air purifier, the Mi purifiers can integrate with Home Assistant. I've had more luck with HAOS than HA Supervised, but they were installed on different hardware so Im not sure what variable resolved the issue for me.

Here is how I use it on my dashboard.

If we search for filters on amazon then the two most readily available and highest rated filters are Levoit Core (not mini) and the Xiaomi. Then for all phillips air purifiers from third party and for Airway Mega 150.

I would say Levoit Core at 9K would be a good bet considering that its highly rated and seems popular. The filter cost is 3K. Its a bit bigger for sure than the mini. I liked the size of mini in a 120 sqft room. Bigger ones might become unwieldy and an eye sore.

Searching for third party filters may be a good option.

Ikea has air purifiers at 6k range and readily available filters for 1k.

Yes ikea too is under my consideration. Which purifier do you recommend from ikea and does it have HEPA filter etc and all stuff?
Because I would expect ikea filters to be easily available.

I don't have air purifier. My flat is too dusty to use one. I was considering buying an Ikea one due to low cost but, I thought I will have to keep changing the filters every 5-6 months looking at the dust coming inside the house. Maybe I'll end up buying the IKEA when I need one eventually purely due to the low cost of filters. I won't buy the gas filter. Its about 3k. Only drawback of the Ikea one is it's a plain air purifier. No digital display, no AI, no home automation, no AQI meter etc. Does what its meant to do and nothing else.
There are purifiers available on Amazon for 6k (like Honeywell) but haven't seen any replacement filters online. There's an even cheaper one for 3k (Realme) bbut people who bought it say no filters available.

Filter size also matters, Ikea has 500 and 1k filters for different models and 1k was actually slightly cheaper because it was larger ( layman calculations).

I am happy with starkvind. During diwali it was available for 5k!, but usually its around 13k which is what i bought for. Filters at 1k, i am running 24x7 and after 6-7 months usage, air flow may have reduced a bit its still effective and not blacked out yet.

Just note that filter is 99.5% filter and not 'true hepa' 99.95% - but in context of air purifier that is a bs irrelevant metric since air does multiple passes through it in a closed room. I have an ikea sensor too and it works well.

I thought I will have to keep changing the filters every 5-6 months looking at the dust coming inside the house

There is a prefilter which catches a lot of dust. In winter here with pm2.5 above 100, i am vaccuming it every week or so. Hepa filter might last 6m-1y, not sure but it is getting visible dust now after 6-7months,

I won't buy the gas filter

I also did not. From what i read, these get used up too quickly to be useful. We need a lot more carbon maybe.

It does have something for this, but need to buy something else and it wasnt clear to me how it gets set up. I just use fan at 3 or 4 to bring pm2.5 down to 10-5 or lower. Ikea had a nice sensor that i use but they might have stopped selling it. starkvind has a lower quality sensor built in and has auto mode around it but i dont use it as i cant customize it without this other hardware.

-------------
Even after all this, air purifier is not a 100% fix, but decent enough. Ideally we need air tight windows and HVAC infra to get consistent air quality. Even within room, dust stil leaks in through closed windows for me and we can have localized higher pm2.5 in areas where air is not circulating easily ( behind curtains for ex). And everytime i go out of room i am exposed to bad air and have started using tata surgical mask within home too.
